I remember having to explain to a pair of Harvard Brain Trust customers, at Walmart, that the PS1 wasn't showing on their TV not because of, as they stated, a short in the wire, but because they needed to to switch the TV to input, not channel 3. That generational crossover really made me second guess my faith in humanity.
Yea I've found that my place in the annuls of Gen X just made it so that I'm tech support for my mother and my 21 year old b/c neither generation seems to know how shit works.
Yeah I went to the Amiga 500 next and then to my first PC, a 386SX-20 with 4MB RAM and an 80MB HDD with SVGA graphics. Fairly high end at the time at least in terms of RAM and HDD.
pfft Texas instrument. Tunnel's of Doom, it had a full tape recorder that plugged into the TI and recorded you game using modem like sounds then you could load up the place you last saved with the tape. I wonder if that was the first savable game.
That looks many years later though, Tunnels of Doom came out in 1982. Looking up looks like not the first those were a few years earlier. And yeah Neo Geo was ground breaking when it came out but completely unafordable.
I put countless hours in both of those games, as well as Q*Bert. My mother was a demon at Asteroids and Frogger. She would kick your ass, wipe the floor with you, then challenge you to another game. I learned to not accept her challenges.
Haha, thatās awesome. And yeah, I put a lot of hours in those games too. Butā¦I couldnāt help but be jelly of my 1 friend back then that had a colecovision. DK wasnāt perfect but it was wayyy better. lol
Even at the time, the 2600 port of Pac-Man was known for being pretty bad.
I read a review in a magazine back then comparing it to the Atari 400/800 port, and the 2600 port was significantly worse. This was partly due to the 2600 being a less capable machine than the computers at that time, but partly it was due to the port being rushed out. The 2600 version of Ms. Pac-Man is much better.
Oh, I know the ports were probably crap, but there's just something about playing an Arcade game at home that sticks in your memory.
SFII and Final Fight on the SNES, Soulcalibur on Dreamcast and Tekken 3 on PS1 are all burned into my brain as 'Holy Shit' moments despite them all being inferior to the Arcade versions.
Around my late teens, early 20s I actually worked at a large arcade. It was Milford Amusement, then changed to Smiles. I spent so much time there... lol almost half my paycheck went right back to them š
Arcade at home didnāt really happen till Dreamcast era. Almost no home port could compete with the arcade versions prior to that. Maybe NeoGeo was, but no one could afford $300 games and a $600 system in 1991 money.
I had an Atari, but NES was a thing already. But itās crazy to think that both my Atari and NES werenāt actually an Atari and a Nintendo NES, both were a third party consoles that could run the games.
It was my parent's from before I was born, but same. Both parents were huge arcade gamers.
We got the NES in '87 and it was a family console. The whole thing were every kid has their own system didn't happen back then. Unless your family was extremely well off or something.
Same, and several of the switches were broken off because my brother decided it would be funny to roll off the top of the tv and onto the Atari. Still worked though, we just had to use a screwdriver to turn it on and off.
Same! Took me a minute to figure out that it came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World installed and booting the console without a cassette inserted would launch the game...
I remember when we got the NES for Christmas one year. My mom had taken it out and wrapped it up so I got the system, but my dad got the controllers and games.
We definitely didn't get it right when it came out. The version we had was packaged with the duck hunt zapper, the power pad, and all 3 games (including Mario) on a single cartridge.
Fucking ninja turtles with that under water level where you gotta disable the bombs in time and theres electric seaweed all over the place.
Playing friday the 13th and enter a house, moving room to room and Jason poppin out of no where scaring the shit out of child me and all i had was throwing fucking baseballs at em.
Probably true, but I was like 6 years old, not sure I knew SNES existed. Came with Mario I and III, Ninja turtles I-III, Blades of Steel, Excitebike, Ducktales, Kirbyās Adventure.. and a bunch of randoms like Hatris. I was satisfied.
I am nearly 40 and vividly recall the NES in our house and more importantly how its as more just a crutch to the Sega which was the REAL gaming console. Sega had us in a chokehold
It was technically my dad's from just before I was born but yea this.....then we skipped every other console up until the wii when I had money to sorta get them for myself XD
It gets better, eventually you knees and back stop aching and you are able to jump like Mario and Luigi again... nah I'm joking... my gaming journey started on a Concert Hall IV. look it up for a good time. I'm still gaming. Sometimes I think I should figure out the stock market and make money like my friends, but I've never really been into PvP.
