I relocated it along with another found in my front yard to the pond that’s about 100 yards away through the woods. Anyone know what kind of snapper they are? It had ridges on its shell.

So I have had this turtle for about 4 years now he was a class pet at my high school I recently graduated from. He’s about 30 years old and is a western painted turtle male he will every now and then do this thing and I would assume he’s just being affectionate or curious but if anyone has any idea let me know! :D

Around 1.5 years ago I rescued 5 turtles who had been vinyl dipped as you see in the photos. Fairly common practice in Vietnam and they are sold as toys to children outside shopping malls. Only 1 (blue) survived out of the 5 rescued as they were unable to absorb UV rays due to the vinyl wrap. Fortunately the blue one is very happy and healthy today!

General Discussion Alright y’all— we took the big leap

Post image

It’s been an eventful year, y’all— moved to a new house in a new walkable city, got a dog, now I’ve finally taken a big leap that I’ve been considering for years…

I present to you— The Turtle Mobile (actually just a green pet stroller).

Since my wife and I got a dog this summer, it’s been requiring us to take long walks twice a day and, sometimes it’s quite sunny out when we do. So, feeling bad about leaving our first-born behind, I had the brilliant idea to knock out two birds with one stone— he will join us on our daily walks in his Turtle Mobile where he can sunbathe to his heart’s content and get that valuable vitamin D.

We haven’t had our maiden voyage yet— usually I just take him out on our back patio for sun. But usually once he’s outside and feels the sun rays, he relaxes and stretches out into full solar mode to soak up the UV. Hopefully he does the same in The Turtle Mobile and is able to enjoy the sun’s rays with us for 30mins twice a day. We’ll give it the first launch this evening, weather permitting.

Best of all— this comes just in time for his 18th birthday, which we all know is the legal driving age for sliders.

General Discussion Update to the found abused paint covered turtle

Original post

His name is now Ishmael. He lives with me, even if it has to be in a witness protection program. I blew off work yesterday and took him to the vet and built him a new enclosure. My last turtle was free roaming in our whole yard but I felt Ishy should be contained a bit more. The new enclosure is 5x10 feet. Only bare landscaping and enrichment right now but I have big plans.

The vet said his swollen eye is likely from vitamin A deficiency (Blepharedema caused by vitaminosis A) and prescribed a supplement. She will trim his beak at a future date when he is more settled.

I've been soaking him daily and he looks a bit better already to me. So far he has only eaten king worms and earthworms but he has a buffet of fruits and vegetables to choose from. Unfortunately he hasn't shown interest in them at all.

A couple questions:

Does anyone have a vitamin supplement they trust? The one the vet recommended (Vetark ACE-High) seems hard to find without exorbitant shipping. My spouse is a fish nerd and said his community generally speaks highly of Repashy but didn't know if it's as common for turtles.

Would you leave him in the outdoor enclosure all night? It's still getting down into the 40s here some nights but the days are sunny and in the 60s-70s. I don't have a good indoor setup but I imagine I'll probably not want to brumate him this winter so maybe I should just build an indoor enclosure now. If he's only in the enclosure for night time sleeping does it even need to be anything more than a small thing?

Thanks for all the support on the original post. I no longer feel torn about letting him stay here.

I'm in school and anytime I tell somebody about my turtle/ show them they either say ew or tell me they want to crush it. It really upsets me as I just want to talk about my turtle and don't know how people can be so cruel

West Virginia. It can’t seem to go under water and it’s struggling. It’s almost like it has an air bubble trapped inside. Is it ok?

General Discussion This is why you can't paint your turtle's shell

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

Periodically people find a turtle that has been painted or ask why they can't paint their shell. This Northern Spider Tortoise came to my facility in 2008 with some red nail polish on one of his marginal scutes. This was used for identification at his previous facility. It's been 18 years and that paint is still there. We use microchips for identification here, but the paint remains.

Now consider if someone was to paint an entire shell, especially on a growing turtle. It could have long term effects to shell growth, UVB absorption and camouflage. Don't paint your turts and torts folks!
