https://docs.opnsense.org/setup.html

Opnsense is the best (IMO) full featured router/firewall distribution. I run it on a retired halfbay 1u rackmount from work. Just a little 7th gen i7 box with 2 ethernet ports and 32g ram. It's way overkill for a standard setup but you can follow the hardware selection guidelines or buy one of their off the shelf devices if you want!

Then for wifi APs I use some old unifi ones because they were free from the retired hardware goodybox at work, but I've heard good things about tplink omada too which is cheaper. You can also run off the shelf routers from various brands run in AP mode one way or another.

I would be misrepresenting myself to point you to one as if I've done it myself.

However, I did some lurking in forums and read a few blogs, and it seems quite easy these days. You don't need to make your own anything.
