If a family can’t afford $200k college tuition, then why are those kids being pushed into expensive private / out of state schools?

Annual tuition at state schools is around $12k per year including books, fees, etc. That’s before any merit or needs based financial aid. Treating undergrad as a lifestyle is a significant part of the problem, and contributes to the massive student debt.

Why does the American system push out of state and private education so heavily?

That national annual in state tuition number is skewed by mid-western states with low populations not charging much for in state students. On the coasts where 70% of the US population lives, average in state tuition is $20-30k per year with more fees added for room and food and books. Even then the mean with the cheap states included was just shy of $14k, not 12K.

Your comment is exactly my point tho! Why is living on campus the norm? Why does US society push 18 year olds to spend exorbitant sums on education lifestyle?

People should go to their local state uni, state college, or community college. It literally doesn’t matter where they take freshman & sophomore coursework, for the vast majority of students.

In-state tuition at California schools is about $10k per year for tuition, fees, and books. Here’s one example: https://sacd.sdsu.edu/financial-aid/financial-aid/eligibility/cost-of-attendance/cost-of-attendance-tables/undergraduate-california-resident

Even here you see the university financial machine at play where it lists “$9,352” as the cost of housing for living with parents… as if that’s not already a sunken cost of rent/mortgage, FFS!

Tuition at PSU in Oregon is ~$11k for tuition, books and fees. Western Washington is less than $10k.
