Apologies for the long post, the main topic is done partway through
Which ones do you find better in comic format, for whatever reason. Be it the visuals make the read better (ie space battles being difficult to follow in a novel), or simply a read through of the novel isn’t worth the time. Maybe this is an "anti art" approach to the universe, asking for alternative mediums on a first time read. But i'm still early on my journey through this (just finished Heir to the Empire), and while im interested in almost everything of the New Republic era, i don’t know if im cut out for what i assume the X-Wing series is about in (assuming this has been adapted to a comic).
Anyway, now that i have you guys here, here’s my short review of Heir to the Empire (the novel). Copied and pasted from my Goodreads.
"A damn solid introduction into the Star Wars Legends continuity. However, of the handful of book series ive read that are part of a series, this might be the first time (that i can recall) where the story ends with a clear cut "you need to keep reading if you want the whole story." I’m used to first entries of series to be a sort of "pilot episode," a complete story in itself, with almost every loose end tied up and a mystery or two that can be tackled if/when the story is continued. This book very much was not that, to me.
Light* spoiler complaints ahead.
Far too much time was spent stuck on Myrkr, not enough was spent on Kashyyyk, Luke seemingly forgot all about C'baoth, and the cast just kinda stumbled into each other very conveniently. A great read still. It was fascinating to see some standard SW fandom topics that are still discussed today were being tackled within old canon as far back as 1991, such as the idea of other jedi having survived the Empire’s purge.
Looking forward to see how the story unfolds in book 2!!"
RATING: 3.75/5
This looks a lot harsher, but throughout it was a solid 4/5, it’s just the book ending how it did, plot lines dropped and not picked back up again since halfway through the book (like Luke's interest in C'baoth), and Mara Jade leaving the story as abruptly as she did (not even some short cutaway of her pensively glaring at the departing Falcon), and the final space battle being kinda "too little, too late" and wrapped up very quickly, all this just added up to .25 being detracted from the 4/5
