This is something I've been saying for a long time. But it's interesting that it's coming from the slavemaster general himself...

Cutting back on the food budget by not dining out and learning to cook can add another $4800 in savings.

The fundamental problem of the argument is that you assume people has that four thousand eight hundred dollars to spend on eating out in the first place. I can not save four thousand eight hundred dollar by cutting out eating out becaue I cannot afford eating out in the first place.

As for cooking, I am lucky that I have enough time and enough kitchen space and enough fridge space to do so. I am not struggling for food. I am not living at the poverty line. I'm doing well enough for myself. But in order to cook, you need kitchen stuff, you need space for kitchen stuff, and you need time to cook, and those are all things that poor people very famously do not have.

We can no have a realistic argument of how the average person can save money to work less based on a middle-income or rich persons already existing saving opportunities.

I used the Bureau Of Labor Statistics figures and personal experience. I am an artist/craftsman and have a lower middl3 class income Without going hungry, my two person household can eat well on a SNAP sized budget (we don't get those benefits, just spend like we do). Just as much of the $4800 would be from good kitchen skills as from not dining out. We have a smaller than average home and that does not limit our ability to eat on a frugal budget. We still go out often, but it is with a group of friends for dinner parties. We can wine and dine six friends for the price of one meal out for the two of us. Then the next three meals are free as we enjoy their hosting.

The bigger problem I see is overcoming the feeling you are being deprived if you are frugal. We resent not having a nice car so we finance one for seven years. We look at beans and rice as poor people food so we eat a lot of beef and chicken instead. Most people just aren't psychologically ready to look at their budget and make changes. But I've noticed more and more people making a breakthrough with ebikes. In many circles they seem cool and not merely trrasportation for the poors. An instant 17% pay raise. I'll admit, taking your food budget from 13% to 6% is more of a challenge, but definitely doable for most people. Where I live, the university opened a teaching garden and kitchen in the most impoverished part of town. Turns out poor people are pretty enthusiastic about having good cooking skills that improve their health and save them money.
