This is the first season I decided to solo queue to GC in every game mode (except 1s of course, that's way, way too difficult lol). I got some tips for you guys if you want to do the same. Keep in mind though, IMO, other than rumble and heatseeker, it's harder to get GC in these modes, compared to regular 2s.
From easiest to hardest (IMO):
1. Rumble: People are generally way worse here than in the regular 3v3 playlist. All you got to do is play fast without overcommiting. Don't even try hard to score. Just focus on keeping the ball in the opponents' half, while remaining ready for defending ur net .
Your mates are generally not going to defend well, but they will be able to score with power ups if the ball is in the other half.
2. Dropshot: Ignore all concepts of rotation. People will ballchase, you just have to adapt to what they are doing. Don't be fooled. If your mate can only hit the ball into his own net, he will still hit that ball.
Your recoveries are the most important thing in Dropshot. You genuinely don't need good aerial mechanics to get gc here. As long as you focus on covering space your mates aren't covering, and never double commit.
Also, don't panic. A lot of the times, it's better to take your time to make sure you get a good hit, even if it means you take damage.
3. Heatseeker: this is super easy once you get used to the movement of the ball. Up until ~c2, you kind of have to be the one redirecting. You just need to be able to josh shot (drive towards their net while the ball is coming, and do a slight redirect close to the goal). If the opponents are bumping, just switch to goalie. If you expect them, bumps are easy to avoid. It's a losing strategy.
Champ 3 onwards is a completely different story. People will be good at redirecting, and you'll also get players that can double tap or volley, so you should switch to goalie. Being goalie is still very easy at GC - you just have to not be afraid to push up (trust your recoveries!), and you have to confidently go up for the ball. If it's hitting backwall but you can get a touch in, you need to be getting that touch (to stop volleys and double taps).
4. Snowday: this is miserable and I don't recommend it. Up until C2, you'll feel like you play with plats. They own goal all the time (not intentionally, but their touches are only good for the other team), and they overcommit constantly. What makes it especially tough is that these exact players are also toxic. Idk why, but snowday is a very toxic playlist.
Play fast and with intent. Boost starve the other team and bump them, while rotating back. Never leave the last man alone. IMO, the strategy never changes in snowday. You do the same thing in GC that you were doing in champ 1. Basically, you have to play as if it's 2v3.
5. Hoops: Up until C2, people are the same as in Snowday. They are masters of playing for the opponents' team. But these guys aren't toxic, so it's fine. People will ballchase hard, and try to play faster than they should. If you have good mechanics, you can just out ballchase them.
Once you get to C3, the story changes dramatically. This early in the season, you constantly run into actual SSLs playing Hoops in C3. The ballchasing strategy will hurt you bad. That's because they play more methodically and are way better at defending.
Imo, the easiest way to deal with that is... taking your time. Don't take any unfavorable 50/50, don't try to play unnecessarily fast. Take your time in defense (low 50s in defense are a godsent in hoops, just like they are in 2s). Getting from c3 to GC was a nightmare. This early in the season, there are a lot of ssls there.
All you need to know is how to do ground to air dribbles and you'll get GC.
Edit: For reference, it took me 52 matches to get gc in Heatseeker. 36 matches in snow day. 21 matches in dropshot. 20 matches in rumble, and a MASSIVE ~200 matches to get gc in hoops.
And yeah, I've been gc in all of these in previous seasons (except for heatseeker which I never played much), so my placements shot me up quickly. I just never tried getting gc in all during the same season. Last season I only bothered to get gc in rumble.
