The results on the recent ship-wide poll on how strictly Rule 4 should be enforced are in.
Even adding the "Less Strict" and "No Change" votes together into a 'Not Stricter' joint category, just over a third of the community still want stricter posting rules. And looking at core contributer votes, it's a near 50/50 split between "No Change" and "More Strict".
Flat out banning crossposts, random references, and "Red Dwarf in the Wild" posts (where someone shares something that simply reminded them of Red Dwarf) seems a little harsh considering the split. But doing nothing at all would also mean ignoring a large proportion of the community... so...
The announcement is still going on.
INTRODUCING SMEGPOST SUNDAY!!
All low-effort "look at this random item / person / haircut / foodstuff / news article / post nothing really to do with Red Dwarf but here is a title quoting/referencing the show so ehhhhh nudge nudge ehhhhhhh, you see what I am thinking ehhhhhhhhhhhh?" posts must now be kept to Sunday, and be given the Smegpost Sunday flair.
To start with we're hoping we can keep the rule on relevancy pretty loose on Sundays as a bit of compromise and see how that goes, so some smeg that would have been removed previously may now stay up on Sundays, but lots of smeg that would have stayed up the rest week will now be removed... so pros and cons, highs and lows, demons and angels.... if the community response is still that posts are just a little too smeggy even on Sundays we can see about raising the bar again later down the line.
Anyone posting smeg on non-Sundays or misusing the Smegpost Sunday flair will get one reminder, which if ignored, will mean they aren't able to post again. Seem fair?
Oh and we'll turn off crossposts for a bit and see how that goes.

On behalf of everyone here at the r/RedDwarf subreddit, here is a massive THANK YOU to u/DougNaylorOfficial for his mammoth AMA Event on our little corner of the internet here a few days ago! And also, thank you to every single member of this community for being in this sub and making it the awesome place that it is, and double-thanks if you joined in on the AMA itself! Doug responded to over 160 questions and comments over the course of TWO DAYS, which is absolutely legendary. What a guy!
The AMA, at the time of writing, has nearly 600 comments and over 175,000 views, making it by far the post with the most engagement the sub has ever seen, and the highest rated Text Only post we have ever had (yeah that is a real category. What do you mean that isn't a real category? Look it's not my fault everyone around here likes memes so smegging much is it??)
Anyway, I suspect that the answers in this AMA will be combed over, picked apart, and referred back to for the next four decades of Red Dwarf Fandom. We have already had at least one article written using new info gleaned from the AMA making a full circle back to being posted on this sub-reddit again.
While I highly recommend people read through the whole AMA post to see each and every one of Doug's insightful answers, thoughtful comments, witty jokes, and heartfelt responses, I appreciate that 600 comments is a lot of reading, and I would hate for some things to go overlooked. So, I thought I'd do my own, personal, subjective, really-not-particularly-wanted, key takeaways- in the form of a Top Five Ten Twenty Doug Answers List! These are just the responses specifically relating to Red Dwarf that I personally found to be the most revealing new info on hot topics, the most insightful and interesting, or just the most amusing and funny. Enjoy.

So I just recently found an app called "Plex". Its one of your average "free" streaming apps. There is one cool thing about it though. It actually continuously plays seasons 1 thru season 12 back to back. I'm loving it myself and driving the wife crazy cause I'll put it on and fall asleep to it.The only "Season" missing is "The Promised Land" which technically isn't a season but a movie. If you want a free fun way to watch get Plex!

A Jungian Reading of the Four Main Characters in Red Dwarf
I propose that the central quartet of Red Dwarf can be productively read as a single psyche mapped onto Jungian functions, forced into a long-term process of integration.
The premise of the series ā four distinct psychological components sealed together in a confined environment with no possibility of permanent escape ā creates the conditions for integration. The prolonged physical and narrative proximity acts as a binding force (metaphorically gravitational or electromagnetic), compelling the previously fragmented parts into closer relationship. Over the course of the television series and the novels, the characters demonstrably move from mutual antagonism toward greater coherence and mutual reliance.
This reading is consistent with the Hermetic principle āas above, so belowā: the same pattern of differentiation followed by reintegration appears both at the level of the individual psyche and in the literal situation of the crew.
I have not encountered this specific four-function mapping elsewhere in discussion of the series. It accounts for both the comic surface and the surprisingly persistent underlying structure of character development across the years.

Hi,
Thought there might be a few folk interested in our latest episode with a certain Series 4000 service mechanoid (after our chat last year with Doug Naylor seemed to go down well).
We talk about all sorts - he was such a great guest. Quite a bit about his books and publishing⦠obviously, weāre a writing podcast. But also some Red Dwarf chat in there too.
You can check it out here.
Thanks!

Iāve made a small Red Dwarf fan extension called Holly Overhead. Itās inspired by the X-Clacks-Overhead header that Terry Pratchett fans use as a tribute. When a website sends X-Holly-Overhead, the Red Dwarf icon in the extension bar turns red a popup shows the siteās message and a rotating Holly quote. If the header isnāt there, the icon stays grey.
Itās currently going through approval for Firefox, tentatively approved now. I havenāt submitted it to the Chrome Web Store yet, but eventually will. Itās cross supported on both, on Codeberg for review / forking.
If you run a website and want to add the Easter egg, send this as a response header on the main page:
X-Holly-Overhead: Everybody's dead, Dave
For NGINX, add this to your server block:
add_header X-Holly-Overhead "Everybody's dead, Dave" always;
For Apache with mod_headers:
Header always set X-Holly-Overhead "Everybody's dead, Dave"
You can also choose the quotes shown in the popup with a second header. It accepts up to 100 quotes, each up to 300 characters, and you can include an episode or source label:
X-Holly-Overhead-Quotes: [{"text":"There weren't any black holes.","episode":"Marooned"},{"text":"Ship systems nominal.","episode":"Site original"}]
Send both headers with the main HTML page response, not just an image, stylesheet, or API response. The extension checks the headers locally; it doesnāt send them anywhere.
Itās just a little nod to Red Dwarf, Rob Grant, Hattie Hayridge, and the fans who keep these small tributes alive. Holly may even have approved.

My best friend died nearly a year ago. We used to sit up to stupid times of the night getting stoned watching red dwarf and Dr who. We always joked that he was rimmer and I was cat. At Farnborough megacon Chris barrie was kind enough to sign marks favourite rubber duck. I just want to say thank you Mr Barrie. I know Mark looked down with a tear in his eye seeing you do that. Thank you so much for helping me through a hard time

Iāve had a mash up of Tongue tied and Baby Doll by Jamie Miller going round in my head all day š¤Ŗ. I think itās after seeing lots of people on TikTok doing the dance routine to Baby Doll. Iām just reminded of the boys from the dwarf doing that cross over side step move š¤£

Logically, it makes no sense for Jake Bullet to still be a mechanoid.
We even see the next set of players getting ready, and the one playing Kryten is a human, and when we later see a snippet of their game, Kryten is a mechanoid.
It's the character that is a mechanoid, not the player.
Jake Bullet should've been the double-polaroid wielding human presenter of Scrapheap Challenge, but instead we get this for-some-reason chromed-up mechanoid.
Why?
Because Jake Bullet is a figment of Kryten's imagination, so he just sees himself.
It's a clue, isn't it? It's a blatant clue!
Blimey, if you didn't get that, you must've been watching like puddin's!
