Question Help in designing a pigeon loft for daytime use

Post image

Hi everyone. My wife and I have fallen in love with White Racer Pigeons and we’re looking into getting a pair. Problem is that we live in a small condo with a large open backyard. We both work and would like to keep them outside while at work and would bring them inside when home.

This is a mock-up of a large dog cage, predator-proofed. Would something like this work?

Question Frustrated with my pet pigeon.

Hi everyone. I need help.

I have been feeling a bit frustrated with my pigeon, I have had him around 7 months now. He will walk on me if I am under a blanket, sometimes he lands on my feet (if I have socks on lol). He has gotten used to wearing a diaper.

I just feel like he is lonely and or not the happiest. Sometimes I feel like we are making progress, i’d love to work on training with him and teaching him to step up but he only wants to interact if it’s on his terms (which is so fair and I do understand!!) he isn’t very treat motivated, he will come and take them from near me and sometimes out of my hand, but he never wants them enough to “work” for them. I want to respect his cage space, but the most progress I feel like we made regarding him letting me handle him (not to pet him, but things like grabbing him to put him back in his cage or putting his diaper on). But then of course he wasn’t interested in hanging out near me.

I think he would really appreciate a wife, but I can’t give him that right now.

He isn’t very vocal, i’ve only seen him flirt (with his reflection) twice. Has anyone gone through this?

Question What should i do ?

Thumbnail

For the past couple of weeks a couple of pigeons built and nest and were raising 2 fledglings, unfortunately one of them got killed by a crow , but the other survived , he is now 5 weeks old but he still can't fly.
The parents come feed and groom him daily still , and i see he manages to eat by himself the seeds i leave out.
I'm a bit worried because i read that normally they fly at 4 weeks, i don't know if he just needs more time, or if my balcony is too small for him to practice , or if he was injured when his sibling was killed(but he looks perfectly healthy).
I see him at least from time to time flap his wings and i find him on top of the paint bucket on the chair.
Should i just give him more time while his parents are still around , or bring him inside where he will have more room to practice ? I didn't find any rehab where i live (Metz, France)
*pictures edited to remove all the poop they leave

Odd behavior

I have a question. Pax sometimes chooses to sleep outside of his cage and i think that just means he feels safe, but he occasionally stays on a spot that i would think is bad for his feet. Last time i took him down because he was on a tall fan. Should i continue to take him down from the bad spots or just leave him?

Question Egg poo or sick??

Post image
2 Upvotes

I clean their cage every day - every other day so imagine my shock when i come downstairs and see THIS. I swear it’s never been this dirty because I’d hate my birds living in dirty conditions

It’s huge?!!!
And Andi has been having watery poo’s , we aren’t sure their sex’s but always called Andi a girl and milky a boy, but i think they’re more likely to both be girls.

Anyways is this amount of poo something i should worry about or is it the ominous pre egg poo’s I’ve heard about?

Emergency Pigeons abandoned nest

hi everyone this is an emergency! we have renovations going on and pigeons decided to nest in the unfinished roof, we tried dissuading them, as originally it was under a car and then on the unfinished floor, but over the weekend they completed their nest and layed an egg, we were forced to move it as it was quite literally in the roof that was about to get sealed over, so we put the nest on top of a ladder against the wall directly under where the nest was, however they have not returned and only laid the single egg. what do we do? it’s been two days, and the egg is very new, help!

(THESE ARE WILD PIGEONS, I KNOW THIS ISNT THE RIGHT SUBREDDIT BUT IM DESPERATE)

My baby girl has her first eggs. I do not think she hooked up with anyone when she free flies, so I wonder if she bothers so little to none just because she knows her cloaca was not kissed 🤣.

Either way, it is lovely she does not poop in her bedroom and we run strict toilett poop program. Kinda good timing too, because in another end of my apartment in another bedroom I have little fella in quarantine.

Now - I have fake eggs, but they are bigger than hers. More chunky. I hope she will accept the switch 👀. Amy experience with that? I wanna switch them because I would hate her to break them once they will be funky, and I can leave them outside for some predators.

Ps: the circle from the stix is made by me. As some inspo. She did not care at all. She will put them under her and sit next to the eggs. Or she will sit on only one egg. And I know it is always the same one because it is a little dirty and the other is perfectly clean 🤣.

First picture are the babies, second are the parents.

In order of left to right is: Goose, Baby, Pound cake (mom), Pretty Boy (dad) and pretty boy had big ole fancy feet feathers.

But like seriously where did these colors come from??? And baby somehow has that gorgeous fluffy neck (which isn't anything bad. he usually looks like goose but will do that poof with his feathers and it's soooo cute) I adore the babies so much.

Discussion vent to other pigeon keepers

Post image
135 Upvotes

repost because the pic had my address lmao.

hello, i’ve just had this on my mind and although my friends and family are sympathetic, i have no pigeon keeping friends to vent to. mods feel free to remove if this is against any rules i missed.

i live in a dead area for vets, it was a pain enough to find a vet for my moms african grey when we moved here. we have a farm vet but she specifically wont do anything for birds. we had an emergency with one of my doves two years ago and found out all the exotic vets in my area specifically will not see pigeons or doves. you may see where this is going.

i have a breeding flock of fancy pigeons of various breeds. one won 2nd place at a state comp in 2024. i love them all dearly. we had a tree fall on the aviary last winter, been trying to rebuild (it was a 12 by 16 by 8, hard to quickly rebuild). the pigeons have been all over since then, to try and keep up with keeping them clean in their temporary set ups. i must’ve not cleaned well enough. they got sick. i don’t know what but i know roughly when. i’ve lost 6 of my 15 birds. i called and called and the nearest place is three hours from me and they can’t see me until next week. my farm vets doing her best but she doesn’t work with birds. i’ve lost 6 birds in one week. i don’t even know what to do with myself. i’ve been keeping pigeons a long time but ive never had something like this happen, and so quickly too. i haven’t even properly mourned yet because im STILL trying to nip this in the bud. farm vet was finally able to prescribe some antibiotics safe for pigeons, i’m hoping it helps. i just…. like what do you even say? what do you even do? i have the money for the vet stored away and what did it even matter. and i know i feel this deep pain and my wife tries her best but she thinks they’re just pigeons. but they’re my everything. and it wasnt enough.

anyways, here’s a picture of patient zero, stan, my most beloved but stupid bird

He/she?? is about 3 months old and she seems to really like pecking me even though she’ll fly or walk up to me all the time. When she doesn’t want attention I just leave her alone, but when she doesn’t she’ll come up and start pecking me. She accepts food from my hand now, so I thought that meant she trusted me. Is this playful, food motivated, or it is possible she dislikes me?
