Our little Pekes bring so much love and happiness into our lives, and of course, we want them to stay healthy for as long as possible! ❤️ But sometimes, especially with puppies, knowing what to watch out for and which vaccinations they need can feel a little overwhelming.
Here are a few important things every Pekingese owner should know.
💉 1. Don't skip their vaccinations
Vaccines help protect our pups against serious diseases. Ask your vet about the essential vaccines, including protection against parvovirus, distemper, adenovirus, and rabies. Depending on where you live and your dog's lifestyle, your vet may also recommend leptospirosis, kennel cough, or other vaccines.
Puppies usually need a series of vaccinations starting at around 6–8 weeks old, with follow-up doses every few weeks until they're at least 16 weeks old. The exact schedule depends on their health, vaccine history, and local risks. Keep their vaccination records up to date! ❤️
🐛 2. Keep up with deworming and parasite prevention
Worms, fleas, and ticks can cause real problems, especially for young puppies. Ask your vet about an appropriate deworming schedule and safe flea, tick, and other parasite prevention for your Peke's age and weight.
🥣 3. Feed them properly
Good nutrition is so important, especially while they're growing. Choose a complete, balanced dog food suitable for their age, provide fresh water every day, and avoid overfeeding. Keeping your Peke at a healthy weight also helps reduce unnecessary strain on their joints.
🌡️ 4. Be careful with heat
Pekingese have short noses and can struggle to cool themselves down. Avoid strenuous exercise in hot weather, keep them in a cool environment, and never leave them in a parked car. Heavy panting, difficulty breathing, weakness, or collapse can be signs of an emergency.
👀 5. Pay attention to their eyes and breathing
Those beautiful Peke faces need a little extra attention! Check their eyes regularly for redness, cloudiness, excessive tearing, or squinting. Also, don't assume noisy breathing is always normal for the breed. If breathing becomes difficult or suddenly worsens, seek veterinary care immediately.
🦷 6. Don't forget their teeth and grooming
Regular toothbrushing helps prevent dental disease. Keep their coats brushed to avoid painful tangles, check their ears, trim their nails, and gently clean their facial folds when needed.
🩺 7. Don't wait until they look seriously sick
Regular vet checkups can help catch health problems early. If your Peke stops eating, has repeated vomiting or diarrhea, becomes unusually weak, seems painful, or acts very differently from normal, contact your vet. Young puppies can become seriously ill quickly.
❤️ A little prevention goes a long way!
Vaccinations, good nutrition, parasite prevention, regular checkups, and lots of love can make a real difference in your Peke's life. No routine can prevent every illness, but taking these steps gives our little companions a better chance of staying healthy.
🐾 Now I'd love to hear from other Pekingese parents!
What age was your Peke when they received their first vaccinations? And what's one health tip you wish you'd known when you first got your puppy?
Let's share our experiences and help more Peke parents give their little ones the best care possible! ❤️🐶

She's devastated because we made her share a treat with her sister.

Mimi with her last summer trim, she’s 11! Little Cheswick is half chihuahua, half poodle and he’s about to turn 2. How long have your pekes take to accept a new member of the pack? For Mimi I think now I feel confident she has accepted Cheswick, certainly took a long time.

One thing about owning a Pekingese is that you quickly learn those beautiful coats need a little extra attention! 😂🐾 Between the brushing, baths, and keeping those tangles under control, there's always something to do.
I think regular grooming makes a big difference, so I wanted to share a few things that can help:
❤️ Brushing: A little brushing every day can go a long way. Pay extra attention behind the ears, under the legs, around the belly, and anywhere the fur tends to tangle.
🛁 Bath time: Use a gentle dog shampoo and conditioner, rinse thoroughly, and make sure their thick coats dry completely. If you use a blow dryer, keep it on a low, comfortable setting and make sure it doesn't get too hot.
🐾 Those stubborn knots: Work through tangles gently with a suitable brush or comb. Never pull on them, and leave tight mats to a professional groomer.
👀 The little details: Keep the hair around their eyes clean, check their ears regularly, and gently clean their facial folds when needed. Keeping those areas clean and dry helps prevent irritation.
🐶 Don't forget the rest of their care: Keep their nails trimmed, brush their teeth regularly, and be mindful of the heat. With those short noses and thick coats, Pekingese can overheat more easily than many other dogs.
Honestly, I think the trick is to make grooming a little part of your daily routine rather than waiting until the coat becomes a tangled mess. 😂 And if your Peke enjoys being brushed, even better!
I'm curious about other Pekingese owners, though: How do your Pekes behave when it's time for brushing or a bath?
Do your Pekes enjoy being brushed, how do they behave every time you bring out the brush? 😂❤️
Do they sit there like little angels, or do they suddenly forget every bit of training they've ever had? 😂
I'd love to hear your grooming tips, too. Always happy to learn something new
And what's one grooming tip or product that has made life easier for you? I'd love to hear what works for your little ones! 🐾

She was outside chasing butterflies all day and got overheated. It was such hard work, her Mom had to put her in her cage so she could rest on her cooling mat....and NOT run back outside!

Hi everyone! I've lived with Pekingese for years, and I'm always learning something new about this breed.
Their coats are beautiful but they take real work. Here are a few things that have helped me:
What has worked for you? And if you're a new Peke owner with questions about grooming or general care, ask away. I'm happy to help however I can.

His favorite activity seems to be sleeping. I suspect he's about 10 or more years old. Four months ago, my sister took in this little guy, did the entire "posting to the public" thing; and then about three weeks ago asked me to take him as he was waking her up every morning around 3-4 am. I suspect she wasn't really letting him have a good final walk at night.
Anyways, I am a dog-foster parent. I've had as many as six foster dogs at once (along with my own three). I was going to send him to one of the rescues I work with, but his distress cries during the drive to my place just broke my heart. So, he's home for good now.
He sleeps right by my shoulder, generally. He likes to lay in the yard and enjoy the sun; and he doesn't seem to like to walk through the dew laden grasses at night.
He IS the pickiest eater, EVER! Ugh. At least he doesn't need to eat too much...
Oh, and my sister did take him for a thorough vet check , but I'm not 100% convinced they did their best work. They tried some injections for his rear-end arthritis, but it didn't seem to help. However, I've been doin some very gentle modalities on him (generally while I'm carrying him back in from his outsides visits). And his rear end seems much improved.
What else can I say? His hair is getting fluffy after being shaved because of how matted his hair was when he was found.
He seems either really dim or stubborn or maybe not attentive to his surroundings. He'll go outside and then when he's ready to come in, he'll start crying the most heart-breaking cries! When the two foster puppies get in his face, he does this raspy little cry-yap-bark...
Anyway, I love this little fluff-mudgin.

Our little girl was released from the Hospital late Thursday. She’s doing much better. I really appreciate all of the prayers, support, healing vibes, kind words, and love sent to me and her dad. It was a really difficult time for all of us. She’s back home and Gucci missed her so much, I’m glad she’s getting back to her old ways of growling at her brother when he gets on her nerves!

Is this considered a stubborn breed? He's older, seems mostly blind, a little deaf, he's kinda stiff in the back end...
And after three weeks, he still gets either confused or lost in the yard (I've fostered a blind yorkie mix who could find her way back inside after two days). He'll be at the dar side of the yard and just cry and yap!
Are there any traits that are unique to the breed?
Thanks!

So, in 2023 I had started to notice Shelby’s fur was thinning. Over time it progressed, getting to the point where her butt was completely naked, whatever grew in was brittle and wispy, and there were multiple spots where her fur just looked translucent because the undercoat was virtually gone and everything was so thin. Cue the bloodwork, she was constantly teetering on the edge of hypothyroidism, which would explain the hair loss, her skin darkening, and repeated skin infections. When it finally dipped to a level she could start medical treatment, we finally put her on thyro-tabs. That in itself has been an interesting journey, dosages constantly having to be changed as her thyroid bloodwork would fluctuate from one extreme to the other despite always stabilizing during the initial recheck. And the skin. Gosh. I had to give a dog who hates baths one twice a week. She had to sit in the tub with a medicated shampoo for ten minutes! It was miserable! Once completely dry, I had to use a slicker brush to get all the dead hair off of her.
I was constantly being told the one word I dreaded: alopecia. Don’t get me wrong, I love my girl no matter what she looks like and I would’ve come to terms if she went completely bald even though it made me really sad seeing her coat deteriorate like that.
One of the veterinarians I work with had requested we started stocking a topical medication called atop 7. He wanted to try it on some of the patients he saw who frequently came in for skin issues. Over time, they’d come back to us looking like completely different dogs. It never crossed my mind to start Shelby on it since I blamed what was going on her thyroid and slowly was accepting she had alopecia. Eventually I decided fuck it, if it works it works, if it doesn’t then it doesn’t. No harm in trying.
Before I even finished the first box, I started to notice a difference. Initially considered the fact I was just imagining things because I just wanted it to work that badly. But she just kept getting better and better. Last picture is the most recent, she’s still a little thin on the neck, and her butt itself still has some regrowth it’s working on, but wow! Never thought I’d see her fluffy and soft ever again!
I’m not sure how many of y’all have had a similar experience with your peke, but I just wanted to share this to let those who have know about some other possible options to try out but also because I’m so happy to see her looking like her old self again :-)
