General Questions/Discussions Admitted GPAs?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this but I'm really considering NU for my ED, but was wondering if anyone recently has gotten in with a lower end GPA (3.8 UW) and a slightly higher SAT (1500s)? My ECs are definitely what carry me.

Academics/Classes Data Science vs. MLDS

Between the two programs in Weinberg and McCormick, which would be a better minor? I’m an Applied Math junior who has enough room for either of these. I know a minor isn’t that serious esp. since these two are of the same thing, but I was wondering the difference in course load, content, etc.

General Questions/Discussions niche info about northwestern transfer cohort

i am a student that TED'd to northwestern, and we had a kahoot during welcome week about the transfer cohort coming in. here's some interesting information.

  1. the cohort was roughly 270 students, which is around 10% of an incoming freshman class at NU.
  2. this school is NOT CC transfer friendly: 8 out of 270 were community college
  3. (a bit shifty on this datapoint, as people were saying this is a mistake afterward) there are more private transfers than public
  4. there were 3 exclusively music major transfers
  5. there were not a lot of communications/theatre/journalism transfers (can't remember the exact numbers, but for some reason I recall ~15 for comms/theatre, and ~40 for journalism)
  6. the large majority of transfers are econ, followed by miscellaneous engineering degrees, and then various premed paths

here are some personal experiences:

  1. there are a LOT of transfers from emory university, especially its oxford college.
  2. I haven't met anyone who didn't TED here
  3. basically all students are coming from the US news top 40, top liberal arts, or geographically close colleges (like Loyola chicago or UIUC).
  4. in the top 40, to be more specific, most students I've met are coming from private peer institutions (stanford, JHU, duke) or known publics like UNC, the UCs, michigan.

Academics/Classes Bio 202 Study Tips?

Hi, I'm a sophomore currently in bio 202, and I just got my score back from the first exam and I got a 60% 💔. I also struggled a lot in bio 201 last quarter, I consistently scored in the 60s - 70s range, and I barely managed to pass with a B. I really want to do better this quarter, and I was wondering if anyone who is doing/did well in the course could share how they studied for the exams. Right now I have been just watching the prerecorded lectures and making flashcards from the slides but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Tyy

Sports/Athletics Game yesterday

Alum here. In town for business. Decided to go to game yesterday at new Ryan field. The stadium is everything I had heard and read. I was in loft and felt not far from field. That’s the good. Now the bad. Where were the fans? Maybe 1/3 to 1/2 full. Student section emptied after halftime. Just about empty by end of game. It was homecoming! Against a bad team! Also, worst pizza ever. And loaded nachos not so great. Go you northwestern !

General Questions/Discussions Pre-PA Internship

I was looking for opportunities for pre pa experience over the summer as a current second year uni student, and came across the northwestern medicine Pre-PA Internship. Does anyone have experience with this program on applying or has been through this internship that can give me some insight? I plan on applying in December when the application opens and I am betting its pretty competitive, although I'm not too sure how many people they pick? I would love to hear from anyone that has been through this process.

Academics/Classes chem recitation

Hi everyone, I was wondering if, in the past, the questions on the first chem 151 midterm were actually like the practice exams or more like the recitations. I'm asking because the recitation questions are so hard and have multiple steps compared to the MCQs they gave us. Any advice on the midterm would help, thanks!!

Sports/Athletics First game

I’m debating traveling up for the Iowa game. I’m a “neutral” fan (VT fan), but I’d be pulling for Northwestern. The new Ryan Field looks really cool, and Northwestern looks legit this season. That’s a good combo for my first trip. I usually don’t like making my first trip to a stadium unless the home team is good.

How is the parking? Is there any free/cheap parking? I’m willing to walk 20-30 minutes. That’s my normal when I visit a new stadium. Idk if the stadium is in the same location as the old one or not so idk how well the parking situation has been figured out for it yet.

How are the pregame festivities? Is there a dedicated “fan zone?” Anything around campus that you would recommend I check out? I’m not a drinker so bars are a no go unless it’s a bar known for its food.

Thank you in advance for anyone who gives me some advice

Hi! Prospective student applicant here
May I ask does Northwestern care a lot about legacy in application? How does legacy work here at NU when applying?
Thank you!

Clubs Women's Health Advocacy/Research on campus

I'm applying to Northwestern this year, and I am looking for potential student groups interested in women's health that match my interests. I saw a news article about NU Repro and see from 2023, and I was wondering if anyone knows if that is a current group? The club interface on the website lists College Feminists and SHAPE as clubs too, but I have a feeling the site is outdated. Similarly, are there opportunities for undergraduate research at Feinberg or to work at the Student Health Center?

Thanks!

Admissions/Prospective Student Dual-Degree Admission

Hey everyone!

I’m thinking of applying to Northwestern’s SESP + Medill dual degree program.

Do SESP and Medill review applicants separately? Like, if I get accepted by one school but rejected by the other, could I still get into Northwestern through the school that accepted me? Or do both schools have to accept me for me to get in at all?

Thanks!

General Questions/Discussions How to make friends here when my efforts aren’t reciprocated?

Hey! I’m a freshman here, and honestly, from what I’ve heard, I thought people would be much friendlier and open to meeting others than they are.

Whenever I try to talk to someone in class, clubs, or in general, they either seem uninterested or we talk and it leads nowhere. I keep DMing people and reaching out to hang out, but they’re either too busy or I get ghosted. In the rare instance that someone does agree to hang out, we just go out once or twice but then they never reach out to me to hang out again.

I don’t understand why my efforts aren’t reciprocated. And I don’t see how I’ll ever make friends here.. any advice?

Sports/Athletics [Shanoff]: Is the new best stadium in America in Evanston, Illinois? MoneyCall

Is this heaven? No, it’s Evanston.

I’m cribbing from “Field of Dreams” because that line comes closest to how I felt last Friday at the opening night of Northwestern’s new Ryan Field football stadium.

Let’s get the obvious bias out of the way: I’m an NU alum and avid fan. (Literally “driving the conversation”: I drove 11 hours Thursday to get there, then 11 hours home Saturday.)

But the $875 million stadium, funded entirely by the Ryan family, which has invested hundreds of millions more into the university over the years, left me blown away.

The intimacy of just 35,000 fans (down from 47,000 at the old stadium). The distinctive Premier League-inspired canopy that accentuates acoustics and the cantilevered vertical seating that creates, among other things, “the best worst seat in sports.” (The highest and farthest seat is only 135 feet from the sidelines.) Fan-friendly concourses that almost always included a view of the field, even while going for a drink. “Taste of Chicago”-style food options.

As I sat with my 17-year-old kid on a college visit to my right and my four-decade college pals to my left, we were all left agog, saying, “I can’t believe this is OUR stadium.”

It’s not literally ours, of course, but if you can walk out of any stadium feeling that way, things have gone right in the vision and the execution.

General Questions/Discussions Inter-School Transfer (IST) Due Date

I knew the due date was the Friday of the 4th week, but I thought that was for the form itself. Apparently it’s for EVERYTHING, including the advisor meeting. I applied like yesterday and the due date is the 16th, so how long does it take for advisors to reach out? It did ask me for my availability for the week itself so I’d assume within the week, right?

Admissions/Prospective Student Medill IMC Full-Time Interview

Hi! Just wanted to share this in case it's helpful for anyone who might be preparing for the interviews for the program. I applied for Round 1 and just finished my interview -- I had seen a few posts saying that we should go in prepared to answer questions about background, any work experience, projects, interest in the program, etc.

I wanted to second that and also add more context that it might be helpful, especially if you are a student going in with full-time work experience, to be prepared for situational-type questions.

Hypothetical situations you might face with coworkers or challenges you might face when working through a project. I was also asked questions along the lines of how I would approach a dataset, a data discrepancy, or a particular marketing situation -- many of these were based on what my resume conveyed about my job experience, but many questions were also hypothetical situations that I had not seen in real life.

Transparently, I did not go in expecting these types of questions so I wanted to share in case it helped with preparation for anyone currently going through the application process! Be very, very comfortable with answering questions about your work experience, specific projects, specific responsibilities within projects, academic achievements, your journey to this program and plans/goals for after.

Good luck!

General Questions/Discussions Professional headshots

Hi I know this is super last minute, but I was wondering if anyone is a photographer or knows of one that could do my headshots for me: I’m getting my hair styled tomorrow and I have some time so I was thinking of getting that done. I’m in the Evanston area, so if anyone has a photography service or does headshots please let me know!! Would greatly appreciate it.
