I used to forget mine. After I bought the third one I keep it in the truck.

Could’ve bought a lock along with the second one but I shouldn’t give any ideas, it seems you won’t take it out if it’s not gonna get stolen

Unless you tow every other day, just remove it. Especially since in some cases, if getting rear-ended it could cause extra damage.

Then you have a mess to clean up. In that space you use to store that can, I use to store the hitch. My jurisdiction has a regulation to remove when not in use, and the cops are nit-picky
