News/Article Before the Mapogo and Majingilane – How did Sabi Sand's lions get their names?

Post image

Today, legendary coalitions like the Mapogo, Majingilane and Matimba are known by name. But decades ago, many lions in Sabi Sand lived and disappeared without their individual histories ever being recorded.

So what changed?

From Black Maned and Golden Maned to the mysterious five males from the east and the West Street Males, I explored how Sabi Sand's lions gradually went from anonymous predators to individually recognized animals whose lives could be followed across generations.

One fascinating detail: a 2001 report even identified a West Street male by his injured nose.

I wrote an article exploring this transition and the history behind it. It's in Hungarian, but browser translation should make it accessible.

Do you know of any individually documented Sabi Sand lions from before the 1990s? I'd love to hear about them!
