Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

I saw him chewing his food a little interestingly and dropping it. I've worked with lots of hogs before and have friends that have them, so I immediately went to worse case scenario of what's wrong. Nope he's just missing some teeth the teeth he does have actually looked good for a 4.5 year old guy.

I got her in 2017. She wasn't a baby when I got her, so I'm not sure how old she is now. She's sleeping a lot more and playing less and less. I hope she knows I gave her the best life that I could, and I hope I get to have her for a few more years. My precious, special, thinks she's a bat, baba Willow

Warning: Upsetting Content Suspected mouth cancer

Pippin turned 3 in June. We noticed severe gum overgrowth and took him to the vet. They had it biopsied and it came back as gingival hyperplasia and not cancer. On August 6 they removed most of his teeth.

Around the end of August his left eye started looking irritated. We were told the gas from surgery might have bothered it and started Refresh drops, which seemed to help a little.

In early September he started sneezing a lot more than normal and pawing at his face. I noticed his left nostril looked more closed than his right. The next day his left eye looked a little crusty and he sneezed mucus out of his left nostril. On September 21 I noticed a pink spot on his face. He scratched it and drew blood. We started clindamycin that day and meloxicam the next day. The sneezing pretty much stopped, but his eye got worse.

On September 28 they sedated him to take a look at his mouth. His left eye had a scratch over the cornea, and there was a pocket of debris on his left hard palate. They cleaned it out. They also looked at the cells under a microscope, but they couldn’t tell if they were just healing or something abnormal. We started ofloxacin drops every 6 hours. His appetite dipped, so around the beginning of October meloxicam went to every other day. He was still rubbing the left side of his face, and his poop started to be consistently green and occasionally sticky.

On October 8 we saw a different exotic vet. She saw a raw area on the left side of the roof of his mouth, with redness and some irritation along the gumline. She said his left upper jaw was swollen and his eye bulges a little. His left eye still has the scratch, and he cannot blink on that side. She is pretty certain it is squamous cell carcinoma based on what his mouth looks like. She switched him to clavamox, added an antibiotic eye ointment, put meloxicam back to daily, and prescribed a probiotic. She said his prognosis is very guarded to poor. He has been on an antibiotic since September 21 and meloxicam since September 22. Ofloxacin started September 28. The ointment and probiotic just started October 8.

He is still eating and drinking and running on his wheel. I saw bloody mucus in his poop once, before the new meds on October 8, and haven’t seen any since, but his poop is still green and occasionally sticky. His left lid looks a bit more swollen and red. I think he has been scratching at it more, so I’m not sure if that’s why. He also started sneezing a bit more this weekend.

Part of me still feels like this is not cancer and is a deep infection or a pocket they cannot reach. I’m also worried about him being on these meds this long and what it’s doing to his gut. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?

Discussion I think I regret adopting my hedgehog

I adopted a hedgehog only a couple weeks ago. I think he must be around 4 or 5 months old, the previous owner isn't sure himself. I think I made a mistake. I've always wanted a hedgehog, and I did my research, but I think I underestimated some factors about it.

First, I live in a studio apartment. It's large enough that I was able to build a spacious enclosure for him, but it's still one room. He's a lot noisier than I expected and it's kind of disturbing my sleep. It's not his fault, obviously.

Second, I have a 16 year old cat and she doesn't seem to be getting used to him at all. I think the noise also bothers her, and she's been clearly a little anxious and stressed having him around. She usually doesnt care for other animals, so before I got him I figured it would be fine.

It doesn't bother me that he's not a social animal and doesn't really interact with me. I like watching him play with his toys and be cute in his space.

But I'm seriously considering returning him now, though also it's only been 2 weeks. I'm not sure if I should try different approaches to introduce both pets, or maybe just use something noise cancelling at night. What would you suggest in this situation?

Question Hedgehog has a tumor, I need advice

Luna started developing a tumor a couple months ago and it has grown to take up almost her entire front leg. She’s not in pain but it has affected her mobility, she still walks around fine but will no longer use her wheel which she used to love. Other than the tumor the vet says she is very healthy and happy. The only treatment options are to amputate her entire leg or put her down, she does not deserve to be put down especially when she is still so lively and happy. But I cannot afford the 800$ to amputate her leg. Does anyone have any advice or know places that can do it for cheaper?

Discussion Nicked nail

We had an accident while trimming nails today. I used BleedStop on his toe, but he keeps trying to eat the powder. It took a few tries to get the powder on his foot, so he was trying to lick it. I think i stopped him quickly. I just feel bad. I can tell he is in pain and I want to comfort him. He has calmed down enough to eat some tuna churu type treat. And he considered anointing with said treat

Chibi is 9 months old now. I enjoy walks and have taken Chibi out around 5x a week ever since I got him in March (unless it was cold, rainy or whatever else obviously!). He's never ventured far from his blanket until tonight! He instantly began foaming at the mouth and annoiting himself. He kept making happy sounds. I thought he was smiling in the second picture but if you look close he looks a bit creepy with so much froth in his mouth lol. Camera quality isn't the best but had to share!
