Resource So, I hosted my first comic con exhibit...

... and it was bad.

At least at first.

Then, after sparse sales, and interactions with buyers and "almost but not quite" potential buyers. I learned that you're not really exhibiting and showing off your creations as much as playing the game of managing expectations.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, but don't go in there expecting to make lots of sales or even a lot of new fans. If you go there as an indie creator (especially if your comic con host decides to put you in the infamous "Artist Alley" section) you WILL be neglected and you will be neglected for hours. Dozens, no, hundreds will walk right by you and the most you can hope to get from them is a curious glance before something else grabs their attention.

My advice? Don't take it personally. They're looking for something and you just aren't it. Even if it's for something as shallow as because they never heard of you or what it is you're selling, always keep in mind their budget is not a bottomless pit. All you can do is bring some business cards (Which I foolishly did not have prepared) and give as many of those away as you can if you can't make a sale.

Plus, always tell yourself it's never about the profit (It's almost impossible to make profit). It's about the exposure. You're not going there to cover the cost of the exhibition fee, the trip, and your next project. You;re going there to make sure you get a few more fans who will know your brand and follow it for as long as you don;t give up on it.

So, in short, never think of comic con exhibitions as huge leaps. Just small steps for you to mature as as an artist.

I walked in, had my soul crushed, then walked out not happy, but humbled and relieved for having done it at all.

Question Hosting Smaller Stories

Hi all, just wanted some insight about where you all think smaller stories can effectively live. Some advice that gets posted here regularly is to start with 1-8 pages stories, which I think is sound. But where do you put those stories digitally?

Is it worth putting a 2 page story on something like GlobalComix on its own? Is that something that should just live on your personal website and not bother putting elsewhere? Or does it make the most sense to package a handful of short stories together and put them as a personal anthology?

This is solely in regard to getting eyes on work and best practices to do so, not making money in any capacity.

Question How Do You Know Valid Feedback?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello,

I recently sent what I've been working on to my friend group, and one person said my graphic novel seemed decent and could see it going somewhere, and this is what one other person has said to me about it.

My question is this, how do you know when you get valid feedback? I worry that maybe I'm just feeling like this person was being rather harsh, and they're not, they're giving me real feedback. Have you ever gotten an opinion on your work and you weren't sure if it was valid or if the person was just trying to be rude or superior? Or maybe they were the wrong demographic?

I would love to hear other authors opinions on this, thank you for your time.

Looking for Artist - Paid [HIRING/NEED HELP RESIZING SAMPLE PAGES]

Hello Comic Collaborators! I am preparing to query a graphic novel. I have a pitch proposal and 30 sample pages. Some agents I want to query require attachments or sample pages in the email body, not a link to a portfolio. The artist I am working with is stumped by the requirement to keep the file under 2MB. We can't meet it while keeping the art (just the first 10 pages) looking good. I have done everything I can, including seeking help from two graphic designers at major ad firms, to resize these files. My next option is to hire someone in comic production who specializes in this. I would greatly appreciate any referrals or insights. We have tried everything else.

Thank you!

These are some pages I made a while back as part of a pitch deck for a client of mine. Agatha's the girl with red hair, in case it wasn't obvious.

I charge $70 per page(fully colored with text) if you're wondering.

You can find more of my stuff on here: https://www.artstation.com/pocketman

Self-Promo Dragstar_Karmagame

Hello everyone! I'm taking advantage of this space to tell you about DragStar, a controversial and at times tragicomic comic. It's a story that addresses various themes, such as the challenges of the LGBTQ+ world, raising questions about the ethics of the healthcare and judicial systems, and prompting the reader to ask what is truly right and how far one should go to risk their life for the well-being of their loved ones...

You can read it completely for free on GlobalComix via the link : https://globalcomix.com/c/dragstar
Enjoy!

Plot: "Does the end really justify the means? This story portrays human weaknesses through an ever-shifting perspective: like a dynamic Yin and Yang (Tao in motion), the narrative presents the light side—the justification behind every act that seemingly appears wrong and immoral. The main characters—three siblings accustomed to pushing past the boundaries of the law to meet their basic needs—find themselves forced to handle something far beyond their depth: two mysterious murders.

The story opens with the existential reflections of the second sister, Jill, a cancer patient ready to plan a jewelry store heist to afford the expensive medical treatments required by Florida's healthcare system. She is joined by her older sister, a famous and volatile Drag Queen, and her younger brother, an expert hacker. A continuous tangle of events blurring the line between 'Right and Wrong' gradually reveals the true reason behind the three siblings' criminal behavior: a traumatic childhood and the early loss of their parents.

The entire narrative is enriched by strong character development: Patricia, the Drag Queen, brings to mind a refined lady from a bygone era, performing exuberant shows alongside her colleagues at a nightclub called Mad Banana. Jill is more outspoken and bold, while Eddie, the youngest brother, appears almost naive and completely enthralled by a mysterious young girl who lives in the city's storm drains."

Looking for Artist - Unpaid [UNPAID / CONTEST SPLIT 60/40] Dedicated Writer seeking Manga Artist for a 24-page Dark Fantasy One-Shot ("BEFORE THE STITCHES TEAR")

Title: BEFORE THE STITCHES TEAR (縫い目が裂ける前に / Nuime ga Sakeru Mae ni)

Subtitle: Ira: Sin of Wrath

Format: 24-Page Manga One-Shot (Complete Pilot Chapter)

Genre: Dark Fantasy / Seinen / Psychological Action (Vibe: Tokyo Ghoul x Jujutsu Kaisen x Bleach)

Target Contest: Manga Plus Creators by Shueisha (Monthly cash prizes: Gold ~1,000,000 JPY / Silver ~300,000 JPY + official publication and Shonen Jump editor review)

Compensation: 60% (Artist) / 40% (Writer) split of all contest prize money and future earnings (I fully respect that drawing 24 pages is ~150+ hours of hard work).

The Hook and Logline: A traumatized high schooler who suppressed his inner rage plummets from a Tokyo apartment, screaming his raw desire to live in his final moments. Instead of death, he awakens nailed with rusted spikes to a wooden cross in a brutal dark fantasy dungeon—his soul forced into the battered body of an executed vessel for "Ira", the ancient Sin of Wrath.

Rescued by Satella, a renegade witch who becomes his first real friend, he is overwhelmed, weeping, and terrified. But when their escape is cut short by the Hunter Commander—a chilling, aristocratic master tactician in blackened armor—and Satella is brutally skewered before his eyes, the boy's panic detonates into volcanic fury. Awakening a boiling black liquid that solidifies into a terrifying, stitched leather mask, he turns his unbridled wrath into an unbreakable shield for the only person who ever showed him warmth.

Key Characters to Draw:

  • Issei Hazama (16–17 y.o., 172 cm): Not a fearless action hero. An ordinary, terrified Tokyo kid waking up in a bleeding, alien body. He clings to Satella like a lifeline until her near-death unleashes his suppressed monster.
  • Satella (20–25 y.o., 180 cm): A tall, sharp-witted rogue witch in a dark trench coat and heels. Her touch and voice are the only anchor capable of pulling Issei back from Ira's bloodthirsty frenzy.
  • The Lord Commander: Inspired visually by Shalba Beelzebub (DxD). A cold, elegant nobleman in ornate blackened-gold filigree armor with a fur collar. He fights with surgical precision using a runic longblade, treating combat like a leisurely chess match.
  • The Mask (Ira - Sin of Wrath): A parasitic entity. Manifests as boiling black tar crawling up Issei's neck, hardening into a dead-flesh pale leather mask bound by thick black surgical stitches and weeping fleshy dreadlocks (vibe: Corey Taylor Iowa-era Slipknot mask in a gritty manga aesthetic).

Proof of Work and Division of Roles:

  • The Script is 100% Finished: All 24 pages are written, paced, and broken down panel-by-panel (camera angles, composition notes, dialogues, and SFX).
  • English Lettering and Typesetting: I will personally place and format all text, dialogue bubbles, and sound effects on the final pages—you only focus on the art!
  • Contest and Submission Handling: I will manage formatting, contest submission paperwork, and social media promotion.
  • Your Role (Artist): Character design checks, thumbnail storyboard (Name), and final lineart/screentones for the 24 pages.

Preview Materials (Check it out!):

Target Timeline: Aiming to complete the 24 pages within ~2 to 3 months (pacing: ~2–3 pages per week).

Influences and About Me: I am a passionate writer heavily influenced by dark, character-driven manga like Tokyo Ghoul, Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach, Choujin X, and Berserk. I value reliability, open communication, and creative synergy. If you'd prefer to work with pre-made sketches and paneling, I can prepare those for you.
