My dad passed away about a month ago, and I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with it.
My mom and I are really close. We're basically best friends, and we usually tell each other everything. When my dad was alive, he was extremely controlling and jealous. He would've never allowed my mom to talk to another man, even as a friend. Their relationship was toxic in a lot of ways, and my dad even cheated on my mom.
I don't know exactly how she felt about everything, but I know she spent years taking care of him and doing so much for him. After he passed away, I told my mom that she should talk to people and enjoy her freedom now. She deserves so much after everything she's been through.
She told me she would never do anything romantic with anyone, though, and I guess I just took that as a given.
Today, I was already feeling really sad about my dad and crying. My mom saw me, and we hugged. Later, I was in my room when I heard her talking to someone. I went to see who it was because I usually know the people she talks to.
When I walked into her room, she turned her phone upside down so I couldn't see the screen. I asked who she was talking to, and she said it was someone I wouldn't know. I found that a little weird because she normally tells me about these things.
I didn't think too much of it at first, but when I noticed she was hiding it a bit, I asked if it was someone she knew. She said she'd started talking to people for fun after my dad passed away, nothing serious. I made sure she wasn't giving out her number or personal information because I want her to be safe.
The thing is, I genuinely believe she has every right to talk to whoever she wants. My dad is gone, and he can't control her anymore. She deserves to live her life, and I don't think she owes him the rest of it. They've been married for 30 years, and she spent so much time caring for him. I want her to be happy, and I don't want to judge her.
But I still felt really uncomfortable, and I can't completely explain why.
I think what bothered me most was the way she hid her phone. It almost felt like she was doing something wrong, even though I know she's not.
I could almost picture my mom feeling guilty about it. My dad was so jealous and controlling that I genuinely believe he could've killed my mom if he'd found out she was talking to another man. That's how extreme his jealousy was. Even though he was cheating on her himself, he would've never accepted her doing something similar, not even talking to someone as a friend.
When I saw my mom hiding her phone, I immediately pictured how my dad would've reacted if he were still alive. I could almost imagine the fear or guilt she might've felt if he'd found out. And I think that's what made me so uncomfortable.
If she'd acted normally about it, maybe I wouldn't have felt this way. Maybe seeing her hide it made me feel like those old rules were still there somehow, even though my dad is no longer here.
I know everyone experiences grief differently. My mom might be ready to start talking to new people, and that's her right. I understand that logically, and I genuinely want her to enjoy the freedom she didn't have before.
But my dad has only been gone for a month. I'm still grieving him, and seeing my mom do something he would've never allowed feels strange to me. It's like I know things have changed, but I'm still not used to what those changes actually look like.
I don't know if I'm uncomfortable because it's too soon, because I'm still used to the dynamic we had when my dad was alive, or because seeing my mom hide her phone brought back the way he used to control her. Maybe it's a combination of everything.
I love my dad, but I know he wasn't a good husband to my mom in many ways. I want my mom to be happy, and I don't want her to feel guilty for living her life. I just don't understand why I can believe all of that and still feel weird about this situation.
Has anyone experienced something similar after losing a parent? Is it possible that I'm still reacting to the family dynamic I grew up with, even though I know my mom isn't doing anything wrong?
I'm not looking for people to tell me my mom is wrong. I just want to understand my own feelings because I genuinely don't know what to make of them.
TL;DR: My dad passed away a month ago. He was extremely controlling and jealous toward my mom, even though he cheated on her himself. I've always wanted my mom to enjoy her freedom after years of taking care of him, and I genuinely believe she has every right to talk to new people. But today, I noticed she was hiding her phone while talking to someone, and it made me unexpectedly uncomfortable. I think it might have reminded me of the fear and guilt surrounding my dad's controlling behavior. I'm still grieving and trying to understand why I feel this way when I don't believe my mom is doing anything wrong.
