Anyone interested in helping mod this subreddit?

2 Upvotes

I somehow accidentally ended up as mod of this subreddit some time ago but haven't managed to give it the attention it deserves so I thought I would ask this community if there are any maths enthusiasts who might be willing to help out.

You role would include approving new messages / comments that were deemed appropriate for this subreddit.

At the moment everything is pretty casual but if anyone has any advice on how to run a community like this I am open to suggestions.

If so send me a message via mod mail

Math IRC channel on Snoonet

11 Upvotes

Hey /r/CasualMath!

I (along with several others) run a math channel on the snoonet irc network called #math. We are somewhat of a hybrid channel for a variety of math subreddits on Reddit.

IRC is a great way to discuss math and get homework help in real time. The channel would be happy to have you!

To connect via webchat: http://webchat.snoonet.org/math (link in sidebar as well)

How can 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... = -1/12? I made an animation to understand the math behind it.

Found something interesting while playing with numbers, is there a name for this?

7 Upvotes

Guys, I was randomly playing with numbers and noticed something weird lol.

3 + 3/2 = 3 Ɨ 3/2

Both give 4.5. I got curious and started checking if there is any way to generalise this.

So I started with

a + b = ab

Then rearranged it:

ab - b = a

b(a - 1) = a

So,

b = a/(a - 1)

Then I realised I can take almost any number and find another number which satisfies this.

For example, if I take 8, then b = 8/7.

8 + 8/7 = 8 Ɨ 8/7 = 64/7

I also tried another approach. If I say both the sum and product should equal some number c, then

a + b = c

ab = c

Using the quadratic formula, I got

a, b = (c ± √(c² - 4c))/2

So if I choose c = 88, I get two numbers whose sum and product are both 88.

I know this is probably already known maths and not some new discovery haha, but I was happy that I managed to derive the formula myself.

Is there any particular name for this relationship, or anything interesting related to it? Just curious if this leads to something else.
