Accountants and AR professionals: What's the most frustrating part of resolving short payments?

I'm trying to understand how companies handle accounts receivable and payment disputes in practice.

For example, a customer pays less than the invoiced amount, and someone has to figure out whether it's a pricing issue, a missing credit note, a deduction, or something else.

For those working in accounting, accounts receivable, or O2C:

How do you usually investigate these discrepancies?

What part takes the most time: finding the reason, getting information from other teams, or actually closing the dispute?

Do your existing accounting or ERP systems handle the process well, or do you still rely on spreadsheets, emails, and manual follow-ups?

Have you found a good solution, or is there still something that existing tools don't handle well?

I'm interested in hearing what the process looks like in real life, including examples of what works well and what doesn't.

I'm doing research to better understand these workflows, not promoting a product. I'd appreciate insights from people who handle this work firsthand.

How to expense Uber ride with promotion?

I work in a art small business in Canada and I need to invoice my client for an Uber ride I took for an in-person meeting. I cannot figure out the how to properly calculate the invoice when there is an automatic promotion applied. Googling was not helpful either.

This is how Uber charges me:

Fare = x

Hst=0.13*x

Booking fee (not used for hst for some reason) =k

20% off Promotion= -0.2*x

My charge is : x-0.2x+0.13x+k = 0.93x+k

When i invoice my client:

I total the before HST total:

x-0.2x+k=0.8x+k

Then I need to reapply HST

Hst to client: (0.8x+k)*0.13=0.104x+0.13k

Total:0.904x+1.13k

However, because im applying my HST to after Promotion price and Uber applies to the before promotion price, I end up losing money because of the promotion. Is this correct way to do it?

Thank you for any feedback

Trying to get jobs in accounting?

Hello, I've been studying accounting for a while now. Almost finished with my associates + planning to go to an actual university for it. I've worked mostly educational fields and have had a lot of issues trying to get my foot in the door with accounting.

What is the best job to apply for when you little to no experience? Should I get Quickbooks certified or does that not actually do anything?

I got tired of spending hours doing payroll manually, so I built an AI payroll tool to fix it.

I got tired of spending hours doing payroll manually, so I built an AI payroll tool to fix it.

I’m a general contractor, and one of the most frustrating parts of running my business wasn't the actual construction work. It was coming home after a long day on-site and still having to run payroll.

Checking employee hours, calculating overtime, figuring out deductions, fixing mistakes, and making sure everyone got paid correctly.

As the business grew, payroll became even more time-consuming.

I started thinking: Why am I still doing all of this manually when AI should be able to handle most of the repetitive work?

So I built Sheetpay.

It's an AI-powered payroll platform designed for accountants, bookkeepers, payroll professionals, and businesses that manage employees or multiple clients.

Here's what I've been building:

\- Manage multiple clients and employees from one dashboard.

\- Upload employee data using CSV, Excel, or scanned documents.

\- Automatically calculate payroll and country-specific statutory deductions.

\- Generate professional payslips in bulk instead of creating them one by one.

\- Email, download, or print multiple payslips.

\- Set payroll reminders so important deadlines don't get missed.

\- Generate payroll reports and yearly tax forms.

\- Ask Cayla, the AI payroll assistant, to help prepare payroll using voice or text, with human review before approval.

I'm starting with the Caribbean, including Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Saint Lucia, and Belize, with the goal of eventually expanding globally.

The idea is simple: accountants shouldn't have to spend hours repeating the same payroll tasks for every client.

Sheetpay is still growing, and I'm looking for accountants, bookkeepers, and business owners who would be willing to try it and give me genuine feedback.

There's a free plan, so you don't need to pay to test it.

I'd especially love to know what's missing, what's confusing, or what would make it genuinely useful in your workflow.

I am happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Question about Job prospect

I'm thinking of taking a 3 months class to get a bookeeping certificate.

the classes are

bookkeeping level 1 + 2

excel level 1

computerized accounting 1 + 2 (sage 50 or quickbook)

payroll

judging from the classes,

  1. what kind of job can I expect to get? what are the responsibilities?
  2. what kind of wages can I expect to get? I have no official experience.
  3. how easy is it to get a job with the above education and how relevant/useful are those skills?

thanks

PS: I have 3ish years of self accounting with no official accounting education, since I was self employed and worked from home.

PS: I'm in Canada

Which workpapers take the most effort for the least actual accounting?

What workpaper has you spending more time gathering support, fixing formatting, and tying numbers than actually thinking through the accounting?

And when you roll it forward, how much of the previous work is genuinely reusable versus something you basically rebuild every time?

I’m curious what would make the biggest difference: better source data, fewer spreadsheets, automatic tie-outs, clearer support, or something else entirely.

If you received a completed draft with everything linked and reconciled, what would still take the most time before you’d be comfortable signing off?

Ramp vs Brex vs Navan vs Itilite vs ?????

TL;DR: Global company on NetSuite and Zip, using Navan for travel and expense. Looking for better expense management (international, interested in know about India capabilities especially) and making sure we're not overpaying for current services.

I manage T&E for a global company. We use NetSuite for our ERP, Zip for procurement and bill pay, and Navan for both travel and expense.

I'm not a fan of Navan for expense management at all due to the following:

\- Card controls are limited

\- Reviewing coding on transactions in the platform isn't easy

\- The experience is poor for both employees and admins

Travel is heavy company-wide(\~ 2000 flights and hotels booked across 35+ countries annually). Navan's booking experience is fine, but it seems really expensive. I'm open to splitting travel and expense between two platforms, and I'm comparing other travel platforms to make sure we're paying a competitive rate.

For expense, international spend is the challenge. India is the biggest, but I'm guessing India is an issue for any platform. India spend is relatively small, so reimbursements only is fine. It would be preferred to pay employees directly in INR without going through payroll, like we do now.

I've worked with Ramp, Brex, Navan and TravelPerk, plus Expensify, though that was 5+ years ago and I'm sure a lot has changed. Ramp wins on UX by a landslide, but my Ramp, Brex and TravelPerk experience was all US-only. I'm less familiar with multi-currency, international limitations, and how integrations work across subsidiaries.

Planning to demo:

\- Expense: Ramp, Brex

\- Travel: ITILITE, TravelPerk, Engine

\- Possibly both: Ramp, ITILITE

If anyone has any thoughts, I would love to hear user experiences with any of these, or anything I've missed. Bonus points for integrations with NetSuite and Zip!!

Selling a business

Recently a super close friend of mine was diagnosed with a terminal illness and has 6 months to live. He owns a business in the aerospace prototype industry and brings in $18mil per year in revenue after overhead and has had one of the largest aerospace companies contract for the last 30 years.

He sold his building and signed a 5 year lease in June with the new owner.

Now he’s had a long term plan if anything happened to him the accountants run the business as usual. Now all the sudden they told him to do a hard shutdown 1 week from yesterday and he rejected the accountants advice and is planning for 4-6 months if they don’t find a buyer.

I’m concerned since this was never his plan and the plan that was discussed with everyone company wide. I feel like the accountant has had a backdoor deal lined up with a competitor he’s involved with or something in that nature. My friend seems like he’s confused about this and acts like they aren’t telling him much. He doesn’t seem like he’s on 100% on board with this. Him and I are supposed to meet tomorrow to discuss. Thoughts?
