Trigger Warning: Bigotry/Hate Commentary 'Patriot' vigilantes on night patrol ban Indian students from park | News UK | Metro News

This is a literal German brown shirts moment against Indians and Desi's in the UK😬😬.

But I doubt this will gather any attention on the mainstream media in the UK, be it BBC, Sky News or that godforsaken GBN news. Heck GBN especially may publish a news story in their favour calling them " Young British Patriots" or some shit like that.

Pretty ironic as well coming from the nation that once colonised, exploited and starved the whole subcontinent for 150 years can't tolerate brown people on their soil. So much for the claim of being a country of polite and civilised people 🙄🙄.

Edit: Not generalising all British people as being like this. I know it's only a tiny minority with this type of mindset. I've met plenty of Great British folk myself. However such incidents like this against Indians and Desi's have to be highlighted so we can fight back when required 💪⚔️🔥.

COMMUNITY Have you noticed a drop in anti-Indian content after the Russian data center attack?

Just curious - I've heard there's been a major drop in right wing and hate comments directed at other communities since Ukraine attacked a Russian data center. Which has resulted in major drops in Google Search analytics for right wing topics. You may have seen all of the videos and reporting on this.

The theory is that these data centers operated to spread division in Western countries. Divide and rule tactic to weaken countries like Canada, USA, etc.

I'm curious if we've also seen a drop in anti-Indian hate content online since the attack on the centers? Would love to know.

COMMUNITY What has been your experience traveling as a ABCD man?

I feel like this is a topic I haven’t seen discussed but I believe the experience of traveling as an ABCD man is significantly different than that of women or mainlanders of either gender.

Would be interested in hearing others perspectives and experiences, if you could add any characteristics about yourself that you felt played a role positively or negatively feel free to as well.

For me:

Italy (Rome, Genoa, Florence, Milan, Como): Mixed bag but overall positive. When traveling with my family in Rome/Genoa, I felt as if we would get a lot of stares and I remember one shopkeeper being particularly rude and asking if I could afford a shirt (€20 at best). They were not particularly kind but not mean either. In Milan + Como when visiting with friends I found the locals to be exceedingly nice and welcoming and pretty normal overall. The latter felt much more like traveling in the US to me which I appreciated since it gave a sense of normalcy.

Spain/France (Barcelona, Madrid, Mallorca + Bordeaux, Champagne, Nice, Antibes, Cannes) : Pretty okay as well and I found things to be pretty similar to my latter experience in Italy.

Greece(Athens, Mykonos, Crete): Overwhelmingly positive, everyone is incredibly nice/helpful/talkative and personable for the most part. The hospitality is top notch and I never felt out of place or anything.

Mexico (CDMX): Overwhelmingly positive, same as Greece, went with my family and had no bad experiences or feeling of being out of place.

Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto): Hated it. Two week trip and I felt great about it for the first three days and then it got progressively worse as I became more aware. Stares everywhere that would dart away because I would look back, workers constantly ignoring me and only addressing my partner, last to be served always or never acknowledged even at the hotel we booked in Kyoto, just a complete and utter sense of being “othered”. My partner and I weren’t even served at a jazz bar in Tokyo and we saw the same happen to a black man and his girlfriend and they left at the same time as us once we understood what was you going on. I am a pretty confrontational person and so I found this entire culture of looking away and being ignored to be incredibly frustrating. It was basically two weeks of dealing with microaggressions. I would not bother returning again and would recommend anyone who does to not bother with learning all their cultural/social BS because it didn’t make a damn difference in the way they treated me.

Reference: Significantly taller than average and with a bigger build and South Indian complexion (not light skinned but not particularly dark skinned either) in my mid-late twenties during the above travels.

Just asking because my partner and I are looking at new places for us to travel and I’d like to hear the experiences of others like me. I’m interested in China/Korea but I have a sense they’ll be a lot like my experience in Japan.

Trigger Warning: Bigotry/Hate Commentary How do you deal with your friend suddenly hating you?

For context, I'm Pakistani and one of my childhood best friends is Sikh. It's never really been an issue considering we're both from Punjab and share a language and culture together. I genuinely considered him a brother and I felt it was mutual until last year.

The slight "war" between India and Pakistan last year was sorta when things went downhill. Now mind you, I'm the least political person ever and do not hold any resentment towards India. However, my friend sorta started distancing himself from me and I had no clue why until about a week ago, when our mutual friend told me about him talking shit about Pakistan, calling me some not very nice words behind my back and making fun of my religion, uk, the basics. I didn't believe this person so I confronted my friend and he basically said "I'm one of the good ones"?????? Anyways, how am I supposed to deal with this?

It’s weird for me because our families are friends because of me and him and we’ve literally gone on family vacations together. Im not gonna act like our countries are best friends and everyone loves each other but i never expected him to suddenly hate me.

Please don’t make this shi political🙏

COMMUNITY Any of y’all childfree?

I’m 24M and most of the Desi women around me want kids these days. I’m not dating super hard rn, but I am lowkey super worried about the fact I don’t want kids and if that will hinder me in the Desi dating market when I go back into dating full force. No shame to people who want kids or anything, I love kids. I am just not the type to wanna be a father, that’s all. Would prefer someone who thinks similarly but that seems non-existent in our community haha.

CELEBRATION I forget sometimes how BadA$$ Hinduism can be.

Now that my LO is a little older, she’s more curious about things like Navratri. I knew the story from my childhood and remembered some small things-we celebrate Mataji and she beats evil, and some demon was maybe involved (I know, my memory really sucks post having a child). So I had to look into it more.

Wow, the story is pretty awesome! Basically, when all the male gods of the world couldn’t beat a powerful demon, a woman had to go. And the story is kind of awesome-her reincarnations, her ability to be a multi-faceted woman in all her reincarnations, like a daughter, a wife, a mother, and finally a woman who comes to clean up the mess when no man could. So empowering, and so glad to give her positive stories of women in our culture, when right now it’s seems very mysogynistic.

I’m kind of excited to tell this to my LO, and I would love some resources-she really loves books with lots of colors. Any suggestions for books available in the US?

Tia!!

COMMUNITY NRI and Desi conservative coworkers muslim and hindu asking me uncomfortable questions, need help to navigate and shut it down.

Hello!

This is upsetting and triggering me.

It's like I'm talking to my mom and dad from 20 years ago.

One person came last year from india, so shes really uninformed. Another, he is older and muslim... He asks even more inappropriate questions.

They seem to have to question why that i am a single women who lives alone and doesn't have plans for anything.

It's been my first two weeks at work and on top of it already being a harder job task wise...one is my supervisor.

I know i need to just be firm in trying to make them realize their questions are inappropriate, but not be too upset when i tell them to stop.

I am trying to navigate having boundaries with coworkers that have been a rude asking me very private questions.

They shouldn't treat others like this.

My age to why i am choosing certain things, literally like religious and political stuff... Like i just dont know who i can talk to at work when its a small company.

It's one thing to be curious, asking basic questions, but its crossing my boundaries now. I dont feel comfortable.

They don't exactly listen too well regardless of what i say too.

They already have an idea of what they perceive.

I kind of am reaching my limit of being pried into.

Its inappropriate and its rude, and this is great practice for me to shut it down in the future.

I don't owe these people shit.

I am not sure if i should directly say this is inappropriate or i don't feel safe here with you asking me all this....

I had a near death experience during a car accident recently and I have been abused by religious people in my precious community, so i know most people just play a facade.

They look so miserable just from the outside.

I dont want to go to my manager without shutting down the conversations first.

Usually the managers escalate too much and nothing ever happens, i reported sexual harassment at my last job and they ended up rehiring the loser a few months after because we were short staffed in the department.

I want to try to tell them this is making me uncomfortable, but the only thing is i need help as well from these individuals.

RELATIONSHIPS (Not Advice) I asked this in a local dating sub

I thought you guys might be interested to hear perspectives from different ethnicities and thoughts of dating second gen versus new immigrants. It’s really not a universal outlook and can vary by race. But as one user commented, minorities often have to pay a racial tax and hence why we are having these discussions to begin with. Thought you’d like it.

ARTS / ENTERTAINMENT The racist backlash towards the new Avatar The Last Airbender sequel is a perfect example of how appropriating South Asian culture has serious and lasting consequences

The original ATLA creators drew heavily from South Asian and Hindu culture when building the show but projected those influences onto a cast and world that were predominantly East Asian. They deliberately chose not to include any major South Asian characters throughout the four season run and the few that were depicted were ambiguous and forgettable.

All of this led to an entire generation believing that aspects of our cultural traditions and heritage had nothing to do with the show and didn't belong to us. We're seeing the consequences of this culminate today with hordes of grown ass losers accusing Indians of trying to steal Avatar, a literal Sanskrit word, away from East Asians.

I also think it's important to mention that during the 2000s there was a decent amount of popular Western children's media being produced that centered East Asian characters, showcased their cultural heritage, and made it all look dope as fuck. Shows and movies like Jake Long American Dragon, Juniper Lee, Samurai Jack, Mulan, Wendy Wu etc.

There was basically nothing comparable for ABD kids. Our consolation prize were unrelatable, Baljeet-esque caricatures with two lines of dialogue and a crazy accent. I've always believed that a big factor behind Indian racism is the lack of exposure people have to positive depictions of Desi people and culture, and this whole fiasco has strengthened that belief.

I'm not trying to downplay East Asian racism, or say that East Asian media representation was/is perfect, but the differences in how we were treated and represented is genuinely insane and makes the South Asian erasure in the original ATLA series that much more disappointing. I can still remember watching that show as a little kid and being sad and confused at not seeing any badass desi benders lmao

Okay I'm done, I have a lot more thoughts but this rant has already veered off course. I have a Buddhist and Hindu background so this situation got me extra irked lmao

COMMUNITY I recreated Carrom and Duboo as a free browser game.

Post image
4 Upvotes

I grew up around Carrom and had previously made a small digital prototype of the game. Recently, I decided to revisit that project and build upon it, improving the gameplay, physics, visuals, and overall experience.

It's a free browser game where you play against a CPU opponent, with adjustable difficulty, different board designs, and Duboo mode, a regional variation of Carrom.

I wanted to keep the experience simple and faithful to the original game without ads, loot boxes, currencies, or unnecessary distractions. Just Carrom.

It's best played on a desktop or laptop with a mouse although it's also mobile friendly too. No downloads or accounts required.

If you grew up playing Carrom with family or friends, you might enjoy revisiting it.

Play here: https://zillatronics.itch.io/carrom

ARTS / ENTERTAINMENT Masala (1991 film)

Post image
2 Upvotes

So to clarify this isn't about the famous film with Denzel Washington made by the mother of a certain mayor but about the other 1991 Desi movie called Masala starring Srinivas Krishna. It's more a of a magical realist film set in Canada about a recovering drug addict who lost his family in a terrorist attack. I've been trying to find this movie to watch it, without much success. Does anyone happen to know where it can be watched or streamed?

META What is the Indian-American experience?

Particularly for those who are 2nd and 3rd generation, with family from India.

South, North. Hindu, Muslim. Sanskrit, you name it.

What traditions do you have?

What annoys you about typical representation in Western media?

Music, movies, books. Anything you can give me. I’m trying to write a book featuring a family.

POLITICS Consequence of Russian bot farm destruction?

Are y'all seeing a drop in toxic posts after Ukraine obliterated Russian bot farms? Especially anti-Indian posts? I do notice a more peaceful front page. I only use Reddit, but for those using IG or FB or X, any difference?

Trying to figure out how much of the anti-Indian hate comes from bots. I do believe China, Pak and Afghan bots are still pumping out negative content, but Russian bot farms are on a whole another level.
