A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.
The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.
But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.
I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.
Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.
The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.
I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:
Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.
If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:
https://www.change.org/30DaysIsEnough
Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Going to look at in person and test drive this 2018 Tour X. I’ve been a volvo wagon man my whole life but really intrigued by the regal wagon. It has 76k miles, had been regularly maintained including the transfer case serviced within the last 20k. It’s the Essence package with everything but the panoramic sun roof. Asking price is $17,900. Based on what I can find it’s over priced by a grand or 2 but on par with others for sale in the west. I’d love to pick it up for 15k-16k. It’s a private seller not a dealership or lot so I think I have some more negotiating room. It’s a pretty sexy looking vehicle and with awd I’m right on par with my old volvos but in a more unique niche vehicle.
What does the Reddit car world think?

I was intrigued when Amazon started selling cars through their partnership dealers since they have excellent customer service and usually don't put up with 3rd party shenanigans. So I found a car I liked and purchased it online and left a deposit. Few days passed and I hadn't heard anything from the dealer like confirmation or phone call so I got nervous since pickup day was fast approaching. So I contacted Amazon Auto CS with my concerns and they assured me everything was fine and dandy but I still felt uneasy so had the CS contact the dealer. Sure enough, the dealer claimed that the vehicle I had purchased was "unavailable" and that they would be cancelling the sale. I kinda had an uneasy feeling that it might be bait and switch since it was priced way under market price. The fact that they never contacted me and wanted me to drive several hours there before telling me the bad news I'm sure so they can try to sell me another car pretty much confirmed it.
All I got for my time wasted and deposit were 2 options that Amazon Auto offered: to purchase another car just like it and Amazon would provide me "special treatment" whatever that means or head to the same dealership that tried bait & switch and they'll sell me a different car (yeah, I'm sure they'd love that). Yeah, I'll take (C) Neither.
I think I am one and done with Amazon Auto.

But every single new, moderately priced half-ton truck seems to have severe engine troubles:
Tundra - engine explodes
Chevy/GMC 5.3 - engine explodes
Chevy 5.7 - dont want to be the guinea pig
Dodge - i will never buy a dodge product
Ford - All the ecoboost engines seem to have issues
What is the most reliable new truck out there right now?

23 M just got out of college and got a nice engineering gig, and looking to get a good daily driver. I have a budget of around $40k and I’m a sucker for sporty built exterior and as nice of an interior with as many bells and whistles as possible.
I don’t care too much about the actual performance specs as long as it’s reliable, which is what is stopping me from pulling the trigger on a used bmw 4 series.
I don’t know much about cars so any recommendations are appreciated, here are the cars that have caught my eye so far:
2023 BMW 3/4 Series (both 40k miles around $35k)
2026 Genesis G70 (8k miles $33k)
New 2026 Hyundai Elantra N DCT
Kia K5 (love these but 2 of my friends have these and I want something different)
Thanks for any help.

My parents said they'd spend maybe 20k at most for a car for me, or I might get my mom's rav4. This is just in case they ask me what I want.
I want a really reliable car, Toyota and Honda are the obvious picks but are there any other companies? I know nothing about car companies and even less about cars.
I want a nice looking car, sporty would be cool but anything that looks nice and is reliable is best. Saving gas as well, I want one with good mpg with cheap maintenance as well. If it's above 20k, please still do suggest since I'll be working and helping my parents with money as well. Grey or black color way would be my top pick but white is great as well.
Anything light on insurance would be nice to, my parents have been complaining for a while about insurance.

Playing musical chairs in the garage and would love some input. What would you buy for each use case? Here's what I'm thinking for each one:

Shopping around for a new car after mine crapped out and it seems everyone & their mom owns a prius in my town (including my roommate and 6 neighbors lol), and it's starting to feel like a sign from the universe. I have about $4800 in equity to put towards my next car and I'm wanting the reliability, practicality, space, and fuel sipping legacy of a prius. Everyone knows they're super reliable, but is a prius with 100k-150k+ miles a reasonable purchase for $11.5k-15k?
I'm only looking at cars with 0 accidents and a meticulous maintenance history + I'll be able to pay the car off in about 3.5 years. Thanks!
Side note: My top contender is a 2016 four with 156k miles at $12,899 including dealer fees. I'll try to knock em down to a cool $12k if possible.

Should I pull the trigger? I want to know if it's a good deal. Previous lease, 1 owner, no accidents. It has leather seats, heater steering, heated seats, moon roof, 12.3 screen, 16.7k miles at $29516

I'm very bad at car stuff. This dealership misdiagnosed my transmission, had me put 2k of other fixes in the car, then the transmission died two weeks later. If I take my car to trade in elsewhere it's basically worthless now, here I have a little wiggle room since they screwed me.
I'm 6'2" and have felt too big for every sedan I've had in my life. Wanted to upgrade since I'm living in Phoenix and into camping/road trips and want the option to car camp or possibly put a kayak on my car (willing to sacrifice this).
Do any of these stand out as good value and reliable? I need to pick something this week, in a rough spot.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Wife and I formally had 5-30 minute, 15 mile or less commutes. We moved states, and we're buying a house where we have a 60 mile roundtrip commute.
Our garage was purchased when we weren't too worried about the price of fuel, and the commutes were short. We're realizing one of the cars is probably better suited as a fuel-efficient, boring, car. We're torn between letting the 350Z or the FR-S go, but they both fill the same kinda niche for us, so we'd like be trading or selling the Z in as it's the highest mileage car (180k vs 130k on the WRX or 85k on the FR-S).
We were talking about a Prius, but the new one is more than we want to spend right now, so a Nissan Leaf was seeming like the cheap, practical, option, I like the idea of a Tesla, but my wife doesn't want to be associated with Elon. If we go a little over budget, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 seems practical. Ideally we'd like something very efficient with 4 doors, and a similar amount of luggage space compared to the WRX. AWD is nice, but not necessary.
I'm all ears for alternative options that are fuel/energy efficient and relatively cheap on the used market.

On occasion in the past I have commented that (IMO) if you do the recommended maintenance and stick to tried and true engines, BMW aren't the money pits people proclaim them to be and shouldn't necessarily be avoided. My spouse & I have driven ~8 used BMW over the past 17 years/close to half a million miles with little to no unexpected issues.
To be fully transparent, we finally had an unexpected repair. The washer fluid pump on our 2018 X3 has apparently decided to start leaking so we're going to have to replace it.

TLDR: they promised 2000 for my trade-in, but did a bait-and-switch, and only gave me 1000. I noticed too late.
Longer version: I bought a used car a couple days ago (it’s a dealer in Illinois). The salesperson barely spoke English, but he definitely said (like 10 times) that he’s offering me 2000 for my trade-in. He even showed me a printout with two lines (1000 each), and explained that 1000 is base price for my trade-in and the second one is an extra trade-in allowance, so in total, I’d get 2000 for it. I even asked “2000 for my trade-in? Is that correct?” To which he replied “Yes, 2000”. I spent like 7 hours there, so when I was signing the paperwork in the finance office, I didn’t read everything carefully because that would take until 1 am or so, and I felt bad about wasting their time. After I drove my car home (I live 150 miles away in a different state), I noticed that they had only given me 1000 for the trade-in. I could’ve sold it for 3000 in a private sale, easily. I was willing to sacrifice 1000 for convenience, but not 2000.
I know it was a mistake not reading everything carefully, but at that point, I wasn’t so miserable, I just hoped they wouldn’t do a bait-and-switch. It’s impossible to prove that they verbally promised me 2000, although many reviews say they had the same issue with the dealer (again, I saw it after the fact).
Is there any recourse at all? Anything I could try doing that has at least a small chance of getting me my 1000 USD back? I already contacted their general manager, but he flatly refused to do anything as the contract is signed.

I’m not much of a car guy, so I figured I’d ask people who know more about cars than I do.
I’m looking to buy a car and was originally leaning toward a Toyota Corolla because of its reputation for reliability and good gas mileage. But I’ve also been looking into Honda and Mazda and wanted to get some opinions.
My biggest priorities are reliability, good gas mileage, low maintenance costs, and something that will last me a long time.
Also single male 5”5 so don’t need a lot of space

Bought a 90k mileage Toyota 4 runner last year. Owe about 6k now for new brakes and new suspension…. 145,000 current mileage.
Fill up about 2-3 times a week, 75 a piece.
I also owe 22k, 453 a month.I drive 50 plus miles a day for work (i didn’t drive like that when i bought the car)
Carmax gave me an offer for 16k, and i have cash for the rest. Seems smart to not just put money into this if i’m not gonna have it super long term …
I’ve been looking at EVs and i like the Hyundai Ionix a lot… I think i’d save a ton with no gas. Are there other EVs to recommend?
Thoughts? Thanks. I’d save 600 a month

I took my baby Prius C to get serviced today and walked the pre-owned lot while I was waiting. This truck was on the lot.
You know how you look at a car and you just get a feeling? Like, there’s absolutely nothing special about this vehicle. It’s gray, inside and out. The tech package was good for the time but pretty pedestrian by current standards. It’s just straight down the middle fine.
But it looked as well-cared-for as it was well-used. The paint is bright, the interior clean. 148k miles, and it looks as capable as the day it was new.
Another factor is I’d be trading in my 2018 Nissan Versa with 60k miles. Initial KBB lookup puts it between $4000-5000, so this truck, before haggling, gets down to $17000.
But am I high? Is that an okay deal for this truck, or am I just excited to find any truck I can even afford? It’s a Toyota so the mileage doesn’t scare me. But I don’t know what anything is actually worth anymore so my bearings are off.
