What does Pax mean? Common terms on this sub explained

Pax: Short for Passenger.

Ping: The noise the app makes when drivers receive a pickup request.

Fare: The fee a rider is charged.

Fair: Fare, spelled wrong.

Surge: Uber occasionally up-charges riders during times of increased demand. The Surge is a multiplier of the base fare rate.

SRF: "Safe Rider Fee", now known as the "Booking Fee". This is the $1-3 fee that Uber adds to every fare to ccover insurance, app fees, etc.

What are the requirements to be an uber driver?

An in-state license is required. Have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US (3 years if you are under 25 years old) Use an eligible 4-door vehicle

All vehicles being used for rides on the Uber app must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must have 4 doors and be able to transport a minimum of 4 passengers
  • Vehicle model must be 16years old or newer
  • Title cannot be salvaged, reconstructed, or rebuilt
  • Rental vehicles, except those from an approved Uber rental car partner are not permitted
  • Cannot have any cosmetic damage, missing pieces, or commercial branding

Should you choose to drive a vehicle you do not personally own, you must have permission from then vehicle owner and be listed as an insured driver on the vehicle’s insurance policy. Please note that Uber cannot allow a vehicle onto the platform if the driver’s name is not on the insurance document.

If your vehicle does not match the requirements above, you may still be able to use your vehicle for deliveries on the Uber app.

Is this fulltime job?

Driving with Uber offers a flexible earning opportunity. It's a great alternative to full-time driver jobs, part-time driver jobs, or other part-time gigs, temp jobs, or seasonal employment.

How do I do my first ride?

Download and install the driver app, and hit "Go Online". Once you get a request (a "ping"), you can hit 'Navigate' to be taken to the rider's pickup location. When you're sure you have arrived, flip back over to the Uber app and hit 'Arrived'. The passenger (PAX) will be notified of your arrival, though it's also nice to text them - to let them know what type of car you're in (though they see this on their app, not everyone looks) and to confirm that they're actually where their pin was placed. When they get in the car, hit 'Begin Trip'. If they haven't entered their destination, you can enter it - then hit 'Navigate' again and you will be routed there. At the end of the trip, hit 'End Trip', rate your passenger, and you'll be placed back online ready to pick up another PAX!

What are the safety features for uber drivers?

Emergency assistance button

You can use the in-app Emergency Button to call authorities to get help if you need it. The app displays your location and trip details, so you can quickly share them with emergency services.

24/7 incident support

Uber customer associates trained in incident response are available around the clock.

Follow My Ride

Friends and family can follow your route and will know as soon as you arrive.

2-way ratings

Your feedback matters. Low-rated trips are logged, and users may be removed to protect the Uber community.

Phone anonymization

If you need to contact your rider through the app, your phone number may stay private.

GPS tracking

All Uber trips are tracked from start to finish, so there’s a record of your trip if something happens.

RideCheck

Using sensors and GPS data, RideCheck can help detect if a trip goes unusually off-course or a possible crash has occurred. If the app alerts us to such events, we’ll check in on you and offer resources to get help.

Contact Safety Agent

You can connect with an ADT Safety Agent via phone call or text on every trip. Just tap the safety shield icon and select Contact safety agent.

Audio Recording

If you feel uncomfortable, you can record the audio of the trip within the app. Just tap the blue shield to open your Safety Toolkit and access the Record Audio option.

Emergency help if you need it

If you ever need urgent help when riding with the Uber app, you can contact 911 using the in-app Emergency Button in the Safety Toolkit.

The app will show your live location, vehicle information, and license plate number, which you can quickly share with the emergency dispatcher so they can send help faster. And in a growing number of US cities, this information is automatically provided to the dispatcher.

Does Uber help in event of an accident?

When you earn with a transportation network company (TNC), referred to here as ridesharing, many states require extra—and costly—insurance.

Uber maintains this insurance on your behalf. What’s covered depends on factors such as who was at fault; whether you were offline, online, en route, or on-trip; and your personal insurance policy.

Offline coverage:

Your personal auto insurance covers you while you’re offline. You must maintain personal automobile insurance at mandatory minimum limits and provide proof of your insurance to drive and deliver with a vehicle with Uber.

Coverage to repair your car when you’re en route to or on a trip is contingent on your personal insurance including comprehensive and collision coverage.

Coverage when online and available for a trip

Accidents happen. Suppose you’re at fault and another person gets hurt or their vehicle gets damaged. In that case, our third-party liability insurance covers the cost of injuries or damage in at least the following amounts:

-$50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries

-$25,000 in property damage per accident

Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage for you and your riders, including one or more of the following:

Coverage for you and your riders for injuries in a hit-and-run or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver

Personal injury protection, including medical expenses and lost wages for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault

Medical payments coverage for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault.

Coverage when en route or on a trip

Uber maintains some of the most comprehensive insurance for ridesharing and deliveries, including:

-Insurance that covers at least $1,000,000 for property damage and injuries to riders and third parties involved in an accident where you’re at fault

Insurance that covers the cost to repair your car, up to the actual cash value, with a $2,500 deductible, contingent on your personal insurance including comprehensive and collision coverage. This extra insurance maintained by Uber protects your car, no matter who’s at fault, if you maintain comprehensive and collision coverage on your own vehicle.

In most US states, you can also purchase Optional Injury Protection to cover your additional medical expenses if you’re hurt in an accident. This insurance offering, pioneered by Uber, is designed specifically for drivers.

Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage for you and your riders, including one or more of the following:

-Coverage for you and your riders for injuries in a hit-and-run or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver

Personal injury protection, including medical expenses and lost wages for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault

Medical payments coverage for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault

Is being an uber driver worth it?

Recent reports from Uber state that "the vast majority of drivers are satisfied" and that "as of last quarter, drivers in the US were making about $33 per utilized hour" before expenses.

Its for you to decide if its worth it for you personally, volume and earnings will vary greatly between markets. Drivers as independant contractors are also responsible for all expenses which have been rising fast when drivers pay has stayed stagnant.

There are many direct and hidden costs associated with being an uber driver. To start with, You are responsible for tracking your own miles, profits and losses, as well as expenses such as gas, repairs, washes, and so on.

In addition, no one but you is responsible for ensuring you are earning enough. You need to be aware at what rate you are making enough for it to be worth it.

Looks like you've been permanently deactivated

I'm in Los angeles. I'm heading out to start my overnight shift. The app tells me there's a document that needs to be approved before I can go online..

I can't imagine what that document is, so I reach out to support. The AI fuckin chat bot says, "it looks like you've been permanently deactivated."

I go and look into my reports, and there's a link there saying I'm not qualified for reactivation. Okay.

After about 20 minutes I get somebody on the phone, and she tells me to refresh the app. All of a sudden I'm back online. I asked what the problem was. She says it was a glitch on their side.

I don't even know how to describe what kinda shit this company is wreaking on completely innocent drivers. Just imagine.

I mean they're loading themselves up for lawsuits. I certainly would have gone that route if in fact they told me that I was ineligible for reactivation for something that obviously never occurred.

I mean, exactly what the fuck do you mean by "a glitch"?

new TIMEOUT system

Thumbnail

for ubereats drivers in some markets (florida, vegas) there is a new “timeout” system being implemented to get rid of cherry pickers. wanted to know if it’s being rolled out for rideshare as well.

basically if u decline 10 offers in a row, it will stop sending you exclusive offers for 20-30 minutes and only have trip radar (which is greatly reduced and even worse offers).

after that timeout when your back to exclusives, you’ll now only get to decline 5 consecutive offers before being placed in timeout again.

screenshots show the sequence;

1-warning; says declining the next offer will remove exclusives
2-confirmation; makes you confirm twice you want to cancel the next order
3-timeout; banner on ur map reminding you there’s no more exclusive offers

this system has made ubereats unusable. they force you to take orders at a loss or refuse to give you any offers at all.

there have been several posts this last week about the new timeout system in [r/ubereatsdrivers](r/ubereatsdrivers) but haven’t seen any mention of it on this sub. wonder if they are testing it on delivery before expanding to rideshare.

So I'm looking to reconnect with a driver to send her my best wishes, and let her know my daughter and I are doing ok.

Took the trip on Saturday now, and went through the Uber support to try and get in touch with her, but no success. She's only been driving for Uber for about 6 months according to her profile, but if any San Antonio Uber drivers know a Naomi that drives a silver Civic, let her know I've been thinking about her, and hope she's doing well, and my daughter and I are doing great.
I'm not sure how reposting works, so I'll give the TLDR version of events. My 8 year old daughter and I were heading to her friend's birthday party, when we were hit on the driver side, toward the rear of the vehicle, which is where I was sitting, thankfully. Physically, we were fine, but my driver was emotionally shaken, and I was too, to be honest. The impact sent the car into a spin that must have been a full rotation or close to it. Of course police was called, and all that jazz. But when we got out of the car, after making sure my daughter was fine, I hugged my driver, and just held her for a bit as she cried into my shoulder. My daughter and I got a ride the rest of the way to the birthday party, but you don't stop thinking about someone after sharing such a personal experience. And I never heard from Uber support how she was doing. But shout out to my daughter for handling it like an absolute champ.

Back to back to back Denver unicorns

Might have to buy a lottery ticket.

3:20 this I signed in, immediately got two trash offers. Then I get an airport request, pickup is 16 miles away, going 34 to the airport, paying $70. I figure glitch, reservation or unseen surge. Accepted the ride, that 16 miles will take 25 minutes, I slowly head out, figuring they will cancel due to time.

Get to the end of my neighborhood, get a message from rider: “hey, this was a reservation ride that I’m getting fucked on, I’m ready when you get here”. Sweet, I step on it.

As soon as the guy gets in, he asks if he can add a stop, his buddy is at one of the hotels downtown and his driver hasn’t showed either. Even though it’s on the way, maybe 3 miles out of route, I figure uber will find a way to screw me, but tell him ok. As my side of the app updates, he hands me two 10’s. We pick up his buddy, turns out they were both here for GABF this weekend, they’re reps for one of the big breweries. When I dropped them off, rider two hands me a 20.

As anyone in Denver knows, before 6:30 am there is almost never a return trip from the airport. I’m just out of the terminal and I get a request at Signature aviation going to Centennial airport, 33 miles for $38 plus tolls. Figure why not, I’ve got time to kill, didn’t have to be at my real job till 8. Two pilots and an FA shuttled a Leer jet from Vegas to Denver, then picking up a different Leer to shuttle to Napa. On drop off they handed me a 20.

Stop down the street to grab a coffee, just down from there is a UPS facility, get a request going from there to the main UPS, which happens to be 8 blocks from my work. It was $25 for 31 miles, but at this point I was already ahead, picked up two line-haul drivers who were redirected to drop their trucks and trailers at the other facility and take an uber to the yard. Half hour after drop off, got a $10 tip in app.

the 6th hour of driving hits different, how do you keep going without burning out?

i can drive for a few hours without much trouble, but around hour 5 or 6 i start feeling drained. it's not even always physical tiredness. constantly watching traffic, checking the app, deciding where to go next and dealing with pickups starts wearing me down

i've tried bringing snacks and cutting back on coffee so i don't end up jittery behind the wheel. the problem is that eating too much makes me sluggish, and skipping proper breaks seems to catch up with me later. drinking enough water is another thing i have to plan around when i'm trying to stay online

i'm not looking to drive 12 hours a day. i'd just like to finish a 6-7 hour shift without feeling like my brain has checked out before i'm even done

for those who've been driving for a while, what's your routine on a longer shift? do you take a proper break halfway through, go offline for 15 minutes between busy periods, or split your driving into shorter blocks? i'd especially like to hear from people who drive several days in a row

Just feels like as the cost of everything around us goes up somehow uber manages to get a bigger and bigger cut of our earnings. I started at 54% earnings a year ago and just in that span I am all the way down to just 37% take home pay. We are the modern day slaves to these corporations.

Has anyone else experienced this Phenomena??

Post image

I drive overnight and I’ve noticed sometimes the pay for the night seems a little lighter than normal. This has happened to me a few times where I haven’t been logged on or taken a trip in days and then suddenly I start receiving MULTIPLE tips all within a very short time frame as if Uber is intentionally holding them or slow feeding them….

Playing Devils Advocate, maybe Uber is sending a reminder to Passengers that didn’t tip bc they were too busy or whatever. Maybe they all got the message around the same time after their trips were completed. Not complaining bc it’s nice that they come in, I only focus on base pay earnings so it’s all extra money…but definitely a little strange

I wonder how common this is?

Like i said im not sure how common it is for people to do that or if i can even pick and choose, but im just curious.

I developed a app, it helps track your mileage and earnings. Its simple and easy to use, its in closed testing and i need real testers for feedback. Testers will get free lifetime pro of the app. I really think alot of yall will love this app and hey if sucks or anything isnt working, just tell me. Im all ears.

To join, you gotta join the google group for testers (play store adds your email to the list of invited testers, your information isn't stored nor shared) https://groups.google.com/g/milemarktesting

And then after joining you just have to opt into my test and then after 10 minutes you can try downloading it on the app store and use it side by side with your gig apps or uber.

Remeber you gotta join the google group before you can opt in here and then find it on playstore after like 10 minutes while it updates on the backend.

Driver complaining about app route

My driver was saying the app route that was suggested wasn’t good and how the bridge had so much traffic because it was under construction, and he asked me what he should do- I didn’t play into it or respond much, because I don’t drive or have knowledge about roads. So he just took the app route anyway because I wasn’t giving any suggestions- and the bridge wasn’t under construction and there was no traffic at all.

The bridge doesn’t have any tolls and This is the second time this has happened to me

Are drivers trying to get me to suggest to go off app? Or is there something i’m missing?

got first “inappropriate questions” report — advice?

Post image
58 Upvotes

I’m an Uber driver and just received my first report claiming I asked a passenger personal questions that made them uncomfortable on October 11. I have a front- and rear-facing dashcam that records my rides.
How seriously should I take this? Should I proactively contact Uber and offer the footage, or wait to see if they follow up? Has anyone successfully disputed a similar report and protected their account? This is my income, so I want to handle it the right way. Any advice is appreciated.
