advice Low grade uti that became more antibiotic resistant???

So since July I’ve been having a ton of symptoms both vaginal and with peeing. I’ve been on many antibiotics and I’ve been on bactrim before already. I thought my issue was BV and ureaplasma all along. But I actually I found out Saturday that I have a low grade uti that’s become more antibiotic resistant. The bacteria I have is proteus bacillus. Even if it’s low grade I have pain in my back constantly . I found out via test from an urgent care clinic. I’m scared because I never had this before. Also I took this medicine before and I guess it didn’t work? Idk how I got this I don’t use a catheter and I haven’t been in a nursing care facility. What do I do?? Should I take something else along with the antibiotic prescribed to me? It’s 500mg for 5 days one tablet every 12 hours. Please help

vent (advice wanted) Gp says there’s nothing they can do

20f, I’ve have uti’s constantly ever since I was 18. I’ve tried everything. I get a uti/symptoms every week regardless of alcohol or sex. I’ve stopped taking antibiotics for them the last 10 months, since every time I take them I get thrush. And I’m already resistant to a certain type of antibiotic and had been for months while still taking it. Which is how I imagine I got my first kidney infection. I had to go to a&e bc i genuinely thought I was dying I couldn’t walk and my lips were blue but I was so so so hot. Trembling all over.

I started getting similar symptoms of another kidney infection so went to the doctors today. Pain on my flank fever, sciatica, and normal uti symptoms etc she gave me some more antibiotics and just told me the usual stuff hygiene and peeing after sex. Said the only thing she could do was put me on long term antibiotics but she wouldn’t do that because I’m far too young. Literally useless.

Hi, I am 2months postpartum and have had weird abdominal pain. I had a uti and after finishing my antibiotics I had some residual pain. (Abdominal pain, no irritation when urinating)I saw my pcp again and she recommended another urine test and an ultrasound. The urine test was negative for a UTI.
The ultrasound showed: an exophytic left ovarian cyst, Cystic endometrium raising the possibility of underlying hyperplasia and Dilated left adnexal veins and arcuate veins of the myometrium.
I’m concerned about the cystic endometrium. Has anyone experienced this? I already made an appointment with my Ob provider.

advice Help

Hi, I get UTI’s ever so often, I got one when I was 13 and it escalated to a blood infection that put me in the hospital and almost killed me. Since then I’ve had a very deep and irrational fear of bladder infections. Well guess who went to urgent care today? Because I felt ‘weird’ me. And guess who found out they had a UTI? Me. The doctor said it was “severe” and had nitrates but didn’t really explain further. So now I’m like very freaked out, I don’t want want another kidney or blood infection I had no idea I had the UTI to begin with. I just need advice and reassurance. Idk why but my brain is just like “oh well if you didn’t notice the bladder infection what if you haven’t noticed the kidney infection?”

UTI kidney infection symptoms?

I’ve been having UTI symptoms since yesterday and just went to the doctor this morning for antibiotics. They gave me Augmentin.

About an hour after taking the first dose I got a sharp wave of pain in my abdomen and lower back area, including the kidney area. It lasted a couple minutes then stopped completely. No other symptoms, such as fever or chills.

I’m concerned about the possibility of having a kidney infection. Has anyone experienced anything similar to the symptoms I described? If so, what happened?

advice Recurring UTI in Pregnancy

I am currently 17 weeks pregnant with my second baby in my urine keeps coming back showing a UTI, I did not experience. This was my first pregnancy and never took an antibiotic during pregnancy that time I had to take amoxicillin in the first trimester, but it didn’t work so then my doctor prescribed another antibiotic (macrobid) in second trimester that also didn’t work. I still have a UTI so she prescribed the same antibiotic again and is also recommending. I take a low-dose for the rest of pregnancy. I am so hesitant to take more antibiotics, but I also know the risk of a UTI I’m especially hesitant to the daily dose. I should also note I’m not having symptoms. It’s just showing up in my urine. Has anyone experienced this before? If so, what was your experience? Did it impact your baby at all?

vent (advice wanted) Urge to urinate

Hello! I’m 27 and have had multiple UTIs since July. Was put on Macrobid and Bactrim. I went in at the end of September and finally the infection cleared up. My only symptom was the urge to pee constantly and that FINALLY went away with this last antibiotic. However, it started up again. I keep testing my urine at home and it comes up clear.

I am so sick of this feeling. Thought i finally was free weeks ago, but alas here I am again. I wonder if it’s just my bladder needing to heal?? I’m just at such a loss.

Relieved.

After years and years and years of chronic uti and pelvic pain, I finally found a urogyn that has taken me seriously. I finally have answers as far as why I keep getting infections and why I have so much pelvic floor pain. After the right doctor and meds, including ppx meds, start therapy, non antibiotic meds like probiotics and vitamin c and biofeedback therapy, happy to report that my quality of life has improved drastically!!

For those struggling, it does get better

  1. Exact symptoms: Extreme pain lower abdominal area right side. Feels like it’s burning and stretching. Bending down, walking (stepping right foot), sitting down, getting up all result in a sharp knife like jab.
  2. Full Lab Test Results (if available): All species and amounts.

I also had an ultrasound and blood work that the doctor said no unusual findings, apart from Myometrial c-section defect.

6.Treatments tried: What have you tried, for how long, and what happened?

I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin for 5 days and have 3 tablets left (will be concluded Tuesday morning).

I was not given anything for pain (due to having Ulcerative Colitis managed with mesalamine).

I have a pelvic floor dysfunction and am actively in PF therapy.

This is a horrible painful experience! Appreciate any advice.

sexually active again - reoccurring utis

hi i recently became sexually active again with a new partner after a long hiatus. i have been sexually active in the past and have never had a uti.

after we had sex i noticed a frequency in peeing. also discomfort. no other symptoms. i got treated with antibiotics for a uti and my issues went away.

i think i have another one. we’re long distance and i saw him about two weeks ago so i was active. i didn’t really notice any problems until a couple of days ago. i have to pee all the time. no other symptoms and no discomfort. this is weird to me because symptoms are displaying almost a week after seeing him. when i got one the first time the symptoms were immediate.

this is really irregular for me. i always try to pee after sex and wash off. i’m not sure where i should go from here

vent (advice wanted) Tired of post-coital UTI

I (30 yo female) am so tired of these damn UTIs.

I have done all the things- both shower before/after sex. Drink (ridiculous) amounts of water. Pee immediately after. Take D-mannose and cranberry religiously. No bladder irritating foods/ drinks. Tried Uquora flush and also bought probiotics that I take every day. Stopped hormonal birth control to see if that helped. Use lube every time (water based). Eventually got prescribed a low dose Keflex and was so happy when it worked for like 3 weeks. But then they came back.

I feel fine immediately after sex and like clockwork, 24 hours later the burning, bad smelling urine, frequency, and eventually blood and clots come out.

I’m so tired of being scared to have sex. I have such a patient partner but I’m exhausted of inevitably feeling awful every time we have sex. We went a couple months without and I didn’t have a single UTI (I’ve done this before to be sure it isn’t an all the time problem) , but I don’t want that part of our relationship to be gone because of this stupid problem.

I just asked my primary care if they would give me Hiprex to try as I’m at the end of my rope with this problem, they agreed. I’m really holding onto hope that this helps me, any positive stories on Hiprex?

Feels a little silly to cry on Reddit over this problem but I’m hoping I’m in the right place where people will understand. 🙃

IM SCARED

Hi everyone. I’m pretty susceptible to UTIs so when I woke up with burning in my uterus i went straight to the doctors. I got antibiotics and started taking them same day. I’m day five of my antibiotics (the last day) but i feel like im feeling slight flank pain and keep thinking it might be a kidney infection. Unfortunately i’m out of town so I can’t go to my doctors, and I’m starting to freak out. It’s weird though because the UTI symptoms completely went away with my antibiotics.

Has anyone experienced this ? Am I overthinking?

questions NHS urology appt tomorrow- what would you ask (for)?

I'm a stalwart, lol, had a camera in my bladder some time ago and a kidney scan, both fine apparently. Currently prescribed hiprex and a prophylactic antibiotic, so although I want the appointment as it's a different consultant and they may have Innovations or ideas, I'm a bit stumped as to what to say to them if it's basically a "why are you here" situation.

So, if anyone has had any gains through this pathway or can think of anything to advocate for, I'd be v glad to hear it.

vent (advice wanted) Post uti

I hate to make the post here about my situation but i think i need an advice. Around 1 month ago i got 7 days treatment for my uti (cefpodoxim-ratiopharm). But even after that the symptoms didnt fully go away. I consumed canephron uno for 2 days(stopped because it was affecting my stomach). Ive checked on the infection and did ultrasound, it all showed that im perfectly fine. Then i went to urologist 4 days ago and i was prescribed one time medication fosfocyn(i think, ill edit if im not right). It didnt help only seem to worsen the symptoms. I went to urologist again and she said that its probably stress. There are two specific symptoms that still going on: the urges and the loss of urine. The loss of urine isnt big only 1-2 drops, but it bothers me. I was stressed the whole month and couldnt get out this out of my mind. Like it really bothered me, so i started working on the stress. But even today im fully calm and it seems like my bladder doesnt hold the pee like before the infection? I dont really know what to do. Did i ruin something with all the antibiotics? Is it all just stress and i need to give it a time?

Antibiotic options for UTIs

Hi I am allergic to Macrobid and sulfa (so no Bactrim for me). I also think I have developed a resistance to Cephalexin. I do not want to take Cipro as I am a runner....but will if I absolutely have to.

Are there any other antibiotics left that I can take??

Is it bad to wait 13 days to treat a UTI if symptoms are lessening with at home remedies?

Ummm, have I maybe had a UTI for years? Major relief after 3 days of meds…

I wanted to share my experience because I know so many of us turn to Reddit looking for answers. That’s actually how I ended up in this subreddit, and I’m hoping my experience might help someone else.

I recently returned from a Caribbean vacation where I spent a lot of time swimming in the ocean. A day or two after returning home, I started experiencing significant discomfort and what seemed like typical UTI symptoms. I went to urgent care and was prescribed prescription-strength AZO and nitrofurantoin.

First, a little advice about taking nitrofurantoin with food.
The first two days were ROUGH. I experienced some pretty intense abdominal cramping after taking the antibiotic. After searching through this subreddit, I realized I might not have been eating enough with my doses.

Initially, my breakfast consisted of fruit and maybe a slice of bread. I switched to a much heartier breakfast with eggs, avocado, and toast, along with a substantial dinner before my evening dose. For me, that change completely eliminated the cramping! Obviously, everyone’s experience is different, but I wanted to share what worked for me.

Now, here’s the part that really prompted me to write this post.
Looking back, I wonder if I’ve been experiencing some type of urinary or abdominal issue for YEARS without realizing it.
I became pregnant in the fall of 2023, and within the first few weeks, I began experiencing an unusual heaviness in my abdomen, along with occasional sharp pains. This was my second pregnancy, and because I hadn’t experienced anything similar with my first, it made me incredibly anxious.

Unfortunately, my delivery ended up being extremely traumatic, resulting in an emergency C-section and hysterectomy. As you can imagine, the recovery was long and difficult.

Over time, I convinced myself that the discomfort I continued to experience was simply my new normal.
I constantly felt bloated. My stomach often felt heavy, almost as though I were still pregnant. I struggled to lose belly fat regardless of what I did. Occasionally, I experienced sharp pains when urinating. Even something as simple as coughing, sneezing, or clearing my throat could cause such sharp abdominal pain that I would instinctively hold my belly to brace myself.
And I just lived with it.

Between being a mom, working, and managing everyday life, I never really stopped to question whether something else might be going on. I assumed it was all part of recovering from such a major surgery and that this was simply how my body would feel moving forward.

Fast-forward to today. I’m only on day 3 of my 7-day nitrofurantoin prescription, and I genuinely cannot believe how different I feel.
For the first time in YEARS, I don’t feel bloated. That constant heaviness in my abdomen is gone. I can cough, sneeze, and clear my throat without instinctively grabbing my stomach in anticipation of pain.

It’s honestly been life-changing.

Now, I can’t say for certain that I’ve had a UTI all these years or that the antibiotic explains every symptom I’ve experienced. That’s something I’ll need to follow up with my doctor about. But the difference I’m feeling after just three days is remarkable.

I have great health insurance, access to doctors, and every opportunity to seek medical attention. Yet somehow, I spent years accepting discomfort as my normal, especially after such a traumatic childbirth experience.
I’m not necessarily looking for advice or responses. I just wanted to put my experience out there because I know how often I’ve searched Reddit looking for someone describing exactly what I was feeling.
If you’ve been living with persistent abdominal discomfort, bloating, urinary symptoms, or pain that you’ve convinced yourself is just your new normal, please consider getting checked out. There may be an explanation, and you deserve to explore it.
I know nitrofurantoin has mixed reviews in this subreddit, so I wanted to share a positive experience, too.
Three days into treatment, and I feel better than I have in years. I truly hope it lasts. ❤️
