Reddit TIL not knowing about something that's niche in my country is feigning ignorance.

Firstly, the membership base of LDS Church (when I searched around about it) is heavily US-based. North and South America alone already takes up ~80%.

Secondly, its influence isn't that big in Southeast Asia outside of the Philippines.

Third, I was previously a Muslim and Indonesia itself is a country with the most Muslim population in the world so my unfamiliarity goes even further. Not to mention that among 72 countries this Church has set its influence in, my country is at the very bottom of it in terms of registered member count.

Fourth, the main post itself shouldn't really have anything to do with this at all.

I'd say it's a church of an internationally established but globally niche religious institution. It's more than an obscure local sect, but it is not a religion with the kind of universal public recognition.

I mean, it can be historically significant, internationally organized and influential in particular communities without being common knowledge in Indonesia.

We are allowed to discover that something exists without being expected to have known it existed all along. 🙄

Instagram Because we all should know the United States constitution

For context, person in blue wrote a response to another comment about wanting cities with women only. Person in pink started talking about how that wouldn’t work as we need each other which is why men want to take away the “19th amendment”. Person in blue is European and had no idea what person in pink was talking about. I’m Canadian/German and had to look up what it meant. People outside the US aren’t going to automatically know about the US constitution.

text post Americans should stop trying to "teach morality" to the rest of the world.

And why? Because they do it wrong. There's already the famous "This isn't the Ku Klux Klan" meme from Spain, where a store was forced to put that sign next to figurines from a Holy Week tradition that sounds to Americans like the Ku Klux Klan, but in general, that happens a lot. I'll focus more on racism here, though I might touch on other things.

I'm Colombian, and in my country, there's a tradition I'm glad isn't known in the U.S. called "Carnaval de Blancos y Negros," where people paint their skin another color. Americans would call it "racism," but here it's a deeply rooted tradition. Sometimes I fear it might disappear because one day a foreigner will say it's wrong to do something because it's wrong in their country. But things are VERY different in Colombia compared to the U.S., and many don't understand that.

An example of this is what happened with the Encanto controversy. Here, an artist drew the Madrigal family with lighter skin tones, and all the Americans on Twitter went after them for being racist (well, what else would you expect from a social media platform where God would sound the seven trumpets if He saw it). Bro, have you ever been to Colombia? Not everyone here is the color of a lentil like in Coco—we have Afro-descendants, Indigenous people, whites, and others natively. We've been mixing since we were a Spanish colony. That idea of "interracial couples" is new in a country where you didn't used to interact with people of other colors—here, we've been doing it forever. But Twitter is the internet's trash can—what else can you expect from it?

But it's not just that many Americans preach morality without knowing how things work in other countries; they're also not exactly a shining example of racial morality. Not to mention the fact that they're universally infamous for having high school bullies as police officers who rival the Ku Klux Klan in racism. There's a movie called Writing Freedoms that I'd like to cite. It shows a teacher teaching students of multiple ethnicities not to be racist toward each other. And it's not just white vs. Black—nah, here there are Mexicans, Asians, African Americans, and a white Caucasian kid who gets bullied, and EVERYONE is racist toward each other. And people will say, "It's just a movie," but if I remember correctly, it's set during a period of L.A. gang wars, and all that racial warfare isn't just made up.

Along with that, something else that bothers me—and I've seen it especially on Reddit—is the hypocrisy in racism. Because your skin color doesn't stop you from being racist, but for some reason, when people talk about racism in the U.S. (especially on Reddit), it's always about white Caucasians against everyone else, but "everyone else" is VERY racist. It's so bad that they even invented the term "reverse racism," but that's just racism—so why do they need a new term for racism they're not used to? And with that, they come to crucify artists for drawing characters with slightly different skin tones? I even remember a post in this very subreddit complaining about how in the U.S., people downplay racism when it doesn't come from a white Caucasian, giving the example of an experience with an elderly Chinese woman who literally discriminated against someone with a smile just for being white Caucasian. And the whole debate about skin color and how they've discriminated against other whites for not being Caucasian—like Asians, Italians, or Irish—is an even more absurd topic.

And Reddit isn't exactly an exception to this. In my experience in subs with mostly American users, if you say something that can be misinterpreted in the most absurd way against a minority, you get crucified.

And I'm not joking. The most extreme case I saw was when someone downvoted a girl in a wheelchair who admitted her abusers were from the Middle East because it "created harmful stereotypes about people from there." Wait, what? The fact that you have to defend that not only admits that YES, there is a problem, but it also denies a confirmed fact that many Muslims come to Europe to rape because the state protects them as a minority. And it's not about supporting racism, but you can't use causes like that to devalue the word of a sexually abused person.

And in general, Reddit has this habit of being full of left-wing prudes. But their morality goes out the window when it comes to politics. I don't know if you remember, but when Trump captured Venezuelan ex-president Nicolás Maduro, all the political subs on Reddit in English were filled with political attacks on Trump. It got to the point where Venezuelan subs in Spanish were banning all Americans because they literally used that event to attack Trump. And it's not that what he did was legitimate, but the anti-MAGA crowd didn't care about Venezuela beyond using it to attack Maduro. I even read someone claiming to be an American saying that happened because the average American has the political understanding of a child (and I believe them).

And to wrap this up, I've met several Americans in Hispanic subs who admit things that would get them crucified in American subs. The only one that comes to mind right now is about one who talked about the hypocrisy of the Black community in the U.S., about how many just want the life of a rich white person.

And I already know someone will come up with some nonsense about why I'm racist or whatever. Go ahead and delete the post—I have a life outside of Reddit.

Reddit Apparently the concept of gender is American, or even better, Californian.

So context:

Post asks if people support LGBTQ+,

This guy says he can support lesbians but not someone who is genderfluid pansexual and doesn't believe genders can be changed

So I say genders can't be changed, they're there from birth and people just identify as it

He says gender is biological

I say what you see in the screenshot at the top and then he goes on to say it's the 'Californian' definition as if words change meaning in each US state 😭🙏🏻

I tell him I'm Asian and yet somehow he's still obsessed with the US and says woke American Bubble, bro i live in ASIA 😭🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

So apparently LGBTQ+ rights are American now, yeah. Very American indeed.

Not only did this person say that there is an ISO (?) related to the continent division, and thus almost nobody considers America a continent (except, you know, almost all countries in Latin America).
But they even told ME what the continental model is that is used here, because, you know, I am delusional and don't know how my own country works

In a video talking about the french government's fiscal situation, and after a comment about that government debt, somehow the reply talks about the US.
