am I missing something or is that not vibe coding? from how it's worded I think this is just that the game uses AI for the character interactions and that $1000 bill is for said interactions.

Correct, but it was likely vibecoded. No one who knows programming would, in their right mind, let their customers loose on an LLM with their own tokens.

I'm also going to bet that the dev included the API key in the game and the next story we're going to hear will be the devs cancelling the release because someone racked up 200k worth of tokens in one night.

the dev did not expect it to blow up this much. For an open beta of say, 100 prospected users, this kinda makes sense.

Does it though? Even if your beta doesn't catch traction and blow up your bank account, what's the scale-up plan? What's the end goal here? There's no way to effectively monetize this without changes big enough to warrant another beta.

i agree, and yeah, I would then try to cut down the model (or check on-device SLMs), test again, and gather feedback, specifically looking out for different or negative experiences due to reduced model capacity. This will tell me if the core idea was no fun (which it wasn't seeing how this blew up) or I'm being limited by tech and (hopefully) wait more years until costs have cut down or on-device models become more viable (or the best scenario: user do not noticr the reduce capacity in which case it is safe to ship)

You sell the game for more than what you believe an average player will spend in the game in total. This is not a game like Peak or Minecraft. You are going to get bored after a while. Let's say you play 8 or 9 hours worth. Just charge them for what it would cost to run if they were to actually play for 30 hours.
