Improper Husbandry Giant Asian Water Monitor opens Closet Door

Brutus the senior Asian water monitor keeps breaking into my closet. Once inside, he likes to dress up in my clothes and walk around pretending he's human. Actually, he climbs and topples and breaks everything because of course he does. I told him, just because it's a walk-in closet doesn't mean he is authorized to walk in any time he feels like it. I also told him the next time he breaks in, I will film it and publicly shame him. Brutus tailwhipped me. He don't care.

Sorry if this triple-posted, my connection in The Gong sucks lol.

I met the biggest lace monitor in Australia! Django is a BIG boy, I was not at all prepared for his sheer enormity! I’d seen photos of him before this trip, but they do not do justice to his commanding presence.

This is one big lizard and I happened to film him at lunchtime. He got stroppy with Dad for not refilling his bowl.

Improper Husbandry Neglected Sav monitor

Today I came into possession of a very neglected juvenile Sav.... went to a local pet store I had never been to before because I heard it was closing down. I've always heard bad things about this place so I've avoided it but since theyre closing I decided to see if they had any enclosures or supplies on sale.

Well.... needless to say they did... but they also had a store with straggler animals that hadnt sold and they needed to get rid of. This was probably the WORST store I have ever seen when it comes to animal welfare and no wonder they were only open for ~8-12 months. (If anyone wants to know the name of the store, let me know. I've already been putting them on blast)

It was like they wanted to cut their power bill by keeping the stores lights on but NOT any lights on the animals. Not a single reptile in there had any UVB or heating at all. It was all shut off. Most enclosures didnt have water bowls or even hides, just a glass box with some dirt and nothing else. Granted the store hardly had any animals left (mostly green iguanas, a couple leopard geckos, cresties, ball pythons, etc). I still wanted to look through the animals and get pics to show to animal control when I stumbled across this poor guy. Honestly when I first saw him curled up in the back of the enclosure I genuinely thought he was already dead.

I asked if I could see him out and see his temperament, when the worker gave him to me it felt like he had come out of a literal freezer and wasnt even responsive, sunken in eyes, stuck shed, the whole deal. I immediately asked how much they wanted for him because I adore monitors and just reptiles in general and even if I could get one animal out of here to not die in this store that already smelled like death, I would. They tried to charge me $150 and that was WITH a "store closing discount". I said absolutely not and listed all the things wrong with his care and how unhealthy and overall awful he looks, then magically the price was lowered to $30. I said whatever, I actually have monitor experience and own another monitor anyways (Nile), and just genuinely felt horrible for how awful and miserable he looked.

Well... while I was in the middle of checking out, someone brought a critter keeper out from the back that had what looked like a dead leopard gecko in it. They poked at it for a few minutes and it barely moved, the lady checking me out put a "free to good home" note on it and I immediately said ill take him too. Geckos really arent even my thing (I keep mostly monitors, skinks, and colubrids) but if I can help them get healthy again ill gladly care for them until I can find someone who truly wants them and will give them a good forever home. I get in the car with my half dead monitor and leopard gecko when I realize.... there's a fucking SECOND gecko in there too. The store didnt mention them being housed together so I dont even think they knew about it.

Now everyone is home in quarantine enclosures (because I would NOT be surprised if they had parasites, upper respiratory, etc.) And settling in. I've worked with Savannah monitors before as well as other species of monitor, I've also owned my Nile for 8-9 months. I've done my research on Savs so im confident caring for him, but I wanted to know if anyone had any Sav specific tips or tricks? Most of the ones ive worked with have been owned by friends or have been surrenders to rehome, so it hasn't been a super long term thing. So far his temperament is very calm but ofc he's cold, stressed, and unhealthy so I expect him to get some attitude (my Nile and Monkey tailed skinks have some so im more than used to it). But any Sav tips would be greatly appreciated!

Also if you have guesses on the pet store or just want to know ill gladly give out the name... the whole place smells like death and I wish I was able to take ALL their animals out of there but unfortunately theyre trying to charge insane amounts even with their "sales".

Local exotic pet store :( he's a nile monitor, obviously still fairly young. I hope he sells soon but the last one they had was here for only a little less than a year. If anyone knows how to take action against this place please let me know, I tried calling for a state inspection but they don't care as long as the animal has food, water, and shelter, no matter how improper it may be

Just got My Ackie monitor. Red/yellow mix, 6 month old, gender unknown. They gave me crickets for its first couple meals as well as pinky mice. I know not to feed the pinky mice very often.

If anyone has a feeding schedule or list that works well for their Ackie I would love to know.

Btw the last video is of the lizard in the store

I put a shirt of mine in its enclosure to recognize sent.

Also, any tips or things I can do?

Improper Husbandry What’s going on with my Ackie?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got My ackie this weekend and I have offered crickets and mealworms and she’s just not interested, I understand this could be due to stress.

I just offered mealworms and crickets now and she showed interest by watching them and licking them with her tongue, but turned away and ignored it after.

Now she’s on her basking spot and it’s like she’s having power naps because she keeps closing her eyes and then when she hears a noise, she’ll open them and then close them again and keep them close until she hears another sound.

I understand that sometimes when Ackies are basking, they will close their eyes to “recharge“ but I’m just wanting to make sure if that’s the reason why

Improper Husbandry Rescued from abuse

Hello everyone I just wanna talk about what happened to the poor 3 year old male and no these are not my pictures these are what the seller had up ( I believe he’s male) I found this boy being sold by someone online for 50 dollars, he was being kept in the fucking tub you see in the picture surrounded by a small small dog cage ! He’s an adult at 3 maybe 3 and a half feet, apparently someone else raised him and then gave him to this frankly POS human being, he has a couple of sores on his body from rubbing against the bin 24/7, I believe he’s over weight apparently was on crickets but I think he was being fed dog food, I needed my fiancé to take him from the guy as I woulda lost my cool, I hate that reptiles and fish are the most abused animals in the hobby, he had no uvb or heat lights either, he now lives in my 10x8x8.5 enclosure with halogen heat lamps getting around 130 degrees on his basking area and a Arcadia 12% 54w uvb bulb, he will have a nice dinner of Dubia roaches 🪳 tomorrow

Lol not sure if this is the right sub to post this on, but just got my ackie like 3-4 weeks ago, and since last week theres been weird marks over my body. His enclosure is in my bedroom. Also have his crickets/worms in my closet in a steel box.

Its like a dent also can put my finger in it kinda.

Also had one on my leg which was a big swelt or something, with a dark red dot in the centre of it. Its scabbed off now tho.

Would just like to know if this is lizard related? Thanks.

Going to a doctor soon because its pretty weird, the leg one was tender and hurt a bit this one dosen't just looking for some input on here for now. Thanks.

Birdies nails were getting too sharp for handling so I trimmed em today, and she was fine during it, but definitely not happy. She is getting floor roaches (roaches for her to chase after on the floor) to make up for it

Improper Husbandry Ackie monitor overweight (help)

Hi all,

I have had my Ackie Monitor for over 5 years now. Unfortunately I have let it come to the point that she is now overweight. I am fully aware that this is unhealthy, and it all my fault. I want to do better. Instead of asking AI for help, I thought I could use some experience on this forum.

Seeing other pictures of Ackies has made me realize that she is indeed overweight. My feeding schedule for her is the following:

Twice a week (on wednessday and sunday), she will get some Superworms and some Dubia's or some locusts (I live in Europe). The locusts are great because she will hunt. I normally do not order crickets, as they make a lot of noice and my spouse don't want em inthe house. She eats the occasional silkworm or Black soldier fly larvae too, or dola's.

She dislikes snails, worms (like the ones you find underground Dendrobena). She really hates Redrunner roaches to the point of spitting them out. She likes the wild caught spider from the garder (no pesticides in my garden, in NL spiders are harmless). Yesterday she ate a giant moth. Im trying to vary her diet.

I do not feed meat or egg. In the past when she laid eggs (unfertilized) she would receive a pinky sometimes. Once every 6 months she gets a chicken heart / liver.

I have already seen online that feeding her more frequently, but in smaller portions might be the best bet. What are your tips and tricks to make my ackie lose weight?

Other details that might be relevant:

- She is in a 140cm (l) x 70 (w) x 70 (h) enclosure, she has a spot directly under the UVA / UVB Solarraptor 70W bulb. UVB is additionally supplemented through a large Arcadia T5 UVB (14) Tl light. She has plenty climbing opportunities and the soil reaches around 20 - 30cm in depth.

What else can I do?

Improper Husbandry How can someone think this is okay.

Here’s a little chaos for y’all. This at most is a 6x2x2. They claim it’s a “basking enclosure” referring to the fact they let it free roam with a small dog with little care to them being around each other. There’s maybe an inch of substrate and I can’t spot ANY proper UVB for this animal. No pond at all, apparently it gets “bath time” occasionally. Ripping my hair out over this. Of course said person blocked me after the second comment, smh.

Improper Husbandry My Ackie hates me

I’m just joking, but not really…
I have had her now for 34 days

She is still so skittish, I have tried putting my hand in, reaching near her and all times she ran away.

Right now I have her on mealworms, wax worms and occasional eggs. I have tried feeding her crickets every time I feed her but she refuses them.

Now about that crack in her custom enclosure wall I posted about earlier, I stuffed a bunch of moss in it and I was convinced it was going to work. That little shit dug through the moss and I guess also the wall because now I keep finding styrofoam balls in there.

I’m stuck because I could just cover it up with more spray foam and paint over it but I can’t do it with her in the enclosure obviously so I would have to take her out witch will not work because she won’t even let me look at her, plus I don’t have an extra enclosure to put her in!

If anyone have any advice please share I really need some advice 😃🔫

Improper Husbandry !!HELP!! need re-home ASAP

I’m helping my bfs father rehome this sweet girl ASAP. Her name is shredder, she is a Savannah monitor lizard. I do not know how old she is but she is not full grown. She has been neglected for a very long time (please do not be mean in the comments, I understand this is a grave situation, but I’m just here to get her help.)

I am located in northeast Ohio, serious inquiries only please. (Through comment or dm) She will be completely free along with her enclosure if you wish for it, shipping unavailable unless I can get an experts help on shipping reptiles. I am just trying to do this sweet girl some good and give her a new home. I apologize if this is the incorrect subreddit, please let me know if this should be posted elsewhere. Any help at all in getting her a new home ASAP would be greatly appreciated.
