IAmA Board-Certified Kidney Doctor. AMA about water balance, electrolytes, and goofy water myths.

We’re back for round 3(?)! I’m a board-certified nephrologist (kidney doctor) with some time kill, so ask away. I will also field questions about the Grateful Dead, bicycles, or my favorite conspiracy theories.

Previously I have submitted proof to the mods, so hopefully they can just review my last post(s).

I will not be able to provide personalized medical advice, both in this thread or in a DM.

Edit: That’s all for tonight folks, thanks for tuning in!

Mod-Post Vetted Water Charity List

This thread will serve as a repository of vetted charities that have contacted the mod team asking to post here. With each charity you'll see a link to Charity Navigator and/or Charity Watch. We advise only donating if an organization passes these reviews. Feel free to also check any groups on ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, but note that not all charities are nonprofits.

We don't want orgs to spam the subreddit asking for your time/money, so for now (and until the number of asks grows too large) we'll pin comments by organizers in this thread and cycle them out as needed. There's a limit of 2 concurrent pins, so we'll play this by ear for a bit.

I'll update the list as others reach out.

If you're here as an organizer, please shoot us a modmail or reach out to me directly.

A water bottle recommendation?

I currently have a water bottle I've had for like almost 4 years now. It's a double walled stainless steel. Only use it for water no flavorings. It's starting to taste like metal. In my googling I see there's 2 common options of ceramic lined or titanium. My main criteria for a water bottle is it needs a straw and needs a cover over the spout because I have cats and I don't want their hair sticking to the spout lol. I use my bottle all day in my house and also while out so a clean spout is a must. If you have recommendations please let me know.

Is this normal in my coconut water???

I bought this coconut water, and when I poured it into an ice tray, I started seeing all of these stringy, fibrous-looking particles. Since it says it's pink coconut and they are kind of dark red, I'm thinking it's part of the coconut, but it looks kind of gross. I'm not sure if it's safe to drink. Can someone help me???

I think all of you homies should watch this, although exclusive to the USA, it's a wonderfully crafted video about how different scenarios affect the taste of water.

Brita Elite Filter

My mind has been blown

I've always had a taste in water whether its minerals, chlorine, or dirt, I can taste it in the water. Everyone around me thinks im crazy. I know what im tasting.

I threw out my old brita filter and got the 2 pack elite for 30 bucks.

Im currently drinking air. Its insane. There is NO taste. How is this even possible?! I live in a area with an absurd amount of hard water, no dirt taste now. Im curious how it will be back home where the water is heavily filtrated with chlorine.

Looking for a specific water bottle type

I'm looking for something that has:

  • Chug style (I don't care for straws)
  • Fast flow (needs to let air in as you chug)
  • Doesn't leak
  • All or mostly metal
  • Not completely open like a Nalgene (I tend to spill these all over myself when chugging)
  • No Stanley type handle designs

Help me HydroHomies!

There's about a billion water bottle brands out there now

How to get rid of this dirt/mold?

Post image

Hello all. I've had my Iron Flask for over 5 years now, and I'll be honest, I haven't cleaned it as often as I wanted, but I used it regularly and thought it was fine. But last week I noticed this little silicone stopper was disgusting, and attempted to clean it with a cheap straw cleaner, soaking it in hot water/vinegar, and trying dawn power wash, but these two little bits won't go away. Should I just trash this and get a new one? I don't wanna have to do that, given i have plenty of stickers on my bottle I don't want going to waste 😭

what is hydrogen water and does it do anything?

I have seen gyms installing hydrogen water machines where people refill their bottles after workouts, but most explanations seem to stop at antioxidants.
What exactly is hydrogen water? Is it just regular water with dissolved hydrogen gas? How is that different from the hydrogen already in H₂O, and is there any solid evidence that drinking it offers real benefits, or is it mostly another gym trend?

Durable non-plastic non-stainless steel water bottle recommendations?

Hi hydro homies
Hope everyone’s had a hydrated Monday

I come writing to you mourning the loss of my second glass water bottle in under 2 months. Cause of death: accidentally smacked a wall while turning a corner.

I need recommendations y’all. I don’t want plastic and I’d rather not do stainless steel because I’m sensitive to the taste of metal and every metal bottle I’ve had tasted like metal to me. But these glass bottles on amazon I’ve been using are thin and break easy and I am clumsy and I’d rather not keep buying a new bottle every month.

Maybe it’s time to try a steel one again? Maybe they’ve gotten less metallic tasting in the 10 years since I last tried one? Maybe there’s a secret third option I’m unaware of? Or maybe a better brand that has thick glass that can handle a few wall taps.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

the filter is almost 2 years old (was left in its package) — wondering if it’s a problem with the jug or the filters?

Coffee, Tea, or Hot Water?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Have you ever heard of people choosing hot water instead of coffee or tea? When I first found out that Kyrgyz people drink hot water as a regular drink, I was honestly shocked. It was something that had never crossed my mind. And my Kyrgyz friend was equally astonished to discover that I had never tried it.
Drinking hot water is simply a habit for many people. It’s just tea without tea or coffee without coffee.
She also told me that people consider it healthy. Hot water can be relaxing and is an easy way to stay hydrated without sugar or caffeine.
We often believe that the things we do every day are normal everywhere, but this conversation showed me how much our habits can differ across cultures.
In the end, I discovered that hot water is not as boring as I thought. And who knows—maybe one day when someone asks me whether I’d like coffee or tea, I will simply answer:,,Neither, just hot water."

Included photo is my water filter setup for car camping. I use a Sawyer filter, sun shower for dirty water, and a water cube for the now potable water. I also use the Sawyer filter while backpacking where I have a dirty bottle and a clean bottle. Yay water!

Water bottle recommendations please!

For the last few months I have been drinking from disposable bottles because I tend to forget to clean a reusable one. Well, I’m feeling a wave of responsibleness and want to give reusable another go.

I need something that holds a liter or more and can easily be cleaned by hand. I have bigger hands, so something wide. Also the lid needs to be easy to clean, no little crevices that require a little brush. I also don’t want a straw, but that’s not a deal breaker. A metal bottle is preferred.

Thanks homies!!

Had an old neighbour that worked for Evian. These were to celebrate new years in 1998! There is some weird stringy stuff in the bottle. Don’t think I’ll be drinking this one.

Water Bottle Wednesday Homies how are we cleaning our metal water bottles?

I usually wash mine with dawn and hot water every Friday. But the last time i did it made my water taste like soap. Google suggested I soak it in baking soda and hot water and that didn’t help either. I’m going to try soaking it with a mix of hot water and vinegar hopefully that works
