Mod Approved Input Needed: Organizing & Re-Working Post Flair

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Every now and then, your mod team evaluates post flair, does some spring (fall?) cleaning, and ensures everything is useful/relevant--and we'd love your input this go around! Let us know if you think any helpful flair is missing and urgently needed. Please tell us if we have any flair that you wouldn't miss. Which flair can you absolutely not live without?

In particular (and to provide some concrete examples of potential changes) we're considering eliminating "Fat nib Friday" and "The Tyranny of The Clip." There's also a slight chance we combine "Inky Fingers" and "Inkcident," though that jury is still out. Having heard input from u/justanotheruser2006 and u/RJSnea, we've also added a new History flair.

Feel free to share any other thoughts or suggestions! Let us know what'd improve our large catalogue of flair. All feedback is welcome, of course, so don't hesitate to speak up. If there's a flair you particularly love or think needs to go, we'd love to hear why. Remember, we're hoping to make our flair system as useful, streamlined, and functional as possible for everyone!

Thanks!

P.S. The above post contains a secret message. First person to find it gets. . . uhm. . .bragging rights!

Anyone else cutting back?

I fear I went too hard the first few years ingot into this hobby and my collection is crazy large.

Bottoms Up! Finally! 1st Empty Bottle

Finished a 15ml bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku yama-budo. I wanted to match the spirit of the "bottoms up" flair so I elected to dump the ink straight from the bottle into the barrel of my BENU Euphoria Vodka on the Rocks. It was... not seductive. Video speed is 2x as to not overly bore anybody who decides to watch the whole thing. 😅

Capturing the expression of the cat is no easy, but it was finally completed.

The nib features mirror-polished finish, emulating the grinding style of Pilot nib, suitable for daily use.

New Pen Day I finally found the Lamy I wanted and it's made in China.

I have a long history with Lamy as I'm sure many of us do. My second refillable pen was a Safari and I loved it. I've owned the 2000, a Dialog 3, some design-y Safari offshoots from Europe. Over time my tastes moved toward the finer, and Asian. Even an extra fine Lamy nib wasn't fine enough. But more than that they all felt... boring. I know most people love glass smooth, but I like feeling my pen working. I moved on from Lamy. I kept my 2000 largely as a masterpiece of Bauhaus design.

I also got into cheap Chinese pens which are fun, but didn't connect to any until I got a Wing Sung 601, which I use every day.

I recently put up a survey post asking people what pens they use for long writing sessions.

I wasn't surprised the Pilot Custom 823 was a frequent choice. There was also a Chinese knockoff of it frequently mentioned, the Asvine 126v. It's 10x less expensive than the pilot. I got one. It's great as an alternative, but felt boring. I would use it for a trip as the capacity is spectacular.

Later a comment came up for a different Chinese knockoff, the Jinhao 80. It looks like a 2000 and is $10. Sold.

I was unprepared for how much I would like this pen. Many Chinese pens are fun and cheap. This one is Good.

I got the extra fine. It looks like a Safari nib. There is a converter.

But the writing is crisp. I like it more than any Lamy I've used. And more than most pens I've used in general.

The feel of the barrel is on the money, without a custom material. It even has a spring clip.

I've been using it for a week and it has moved into my pocket.

I'm a little sad to think I'm done with Lamy. But nibs don't lie.

I finally found a way to organize my samples. Now I can easily find the color I’m looking for. My sample storage is completely full, so no more samples or bottles of ink until I use enough to free up some space. I’m very happy with everything I have.

New Ink Day New additions to the collection (and some swatch comparisons)

Thumbnail

Went to Chicago for a week and came back with 3 new inks from brands I've never tried, as well as 3 new TWSBI ECOs in colors I've had my eye on. I went to Atlas Stationers, Paper and Pencil, and the Montblanc boutique (and got to write like 5 words with a $2,080 pen in their sample notebook 🥲).

For inks, I got Montblanc Irish Green, Teranishi Guitar Gentle Green, and Lennon Tool Bar Deep Mountain. In comparing to inks I already have/had (the lack of a blue dot on my swatch cards means it was just a sample or mini bottle), Irish green looks closest to J Herbin Lierre Sauvage, just a tiny bit more blue-toned. Deep Mountain shares similarities with my other inks, being a blue-green teal, but the pictures don't show very well how much more saturated it actually is than the more gray and muted teals in my swatch collection (I believe it's the same ink that u/tomatomatcha uses to draw Ophie the cat!). Gentle Green is the most unique of my swatches, being much lighter than Robert Oster's Peppermint with a bronze instead of red sheen, and much more blue-toned than Sailor Yurameku Sukigokoro. I love the halo it makes around written letters!

People either love or hate TWSBIs, and I'm part of the love category. These pens are the ones I use most often for writing letters and journaling, and I haven't had one break on me yet! The newest ones in my collection are the Irish Green Onyx (guess which of the new inks will end up in that one!), Rootbeer Bronze, and Serpentine Bronze. Two of them have stub nibs, which I've enjoyed using in other pens, so I thought I'd get some from this brand (it was also how I justified my purchase). The others in my collection are the Royal Jade Rose Gold, Glow Green Silver, and Glow Purple Silver. Of course, right after I got back from my trip, I saw that there's a new Jade Jelly Bronze coming! I'm such a sucker for greens, if you couldn't tell...

Currently Inked Finally Enjoying J. Herbin Vert Olive

Post image

Rewriting Gary Halbert letters with a Majohn M2 modified with a Kanwrite Broad nib and inked with J. Herbin Vert Olive on a handmade Tomoe River S notebook.

Vert Olive used to be the ink that stayed in the back of the drawer. I didn’t like how light it was because it made my writing hard to read and hurt my eyes.

But ever since I switched over to a juicy broad nib on a paper that can handle it, writing with it has been a blast. Writing with it super wet really brings out the richness of the olive green color.

Now I’m looking forward to inking more lighter colors, especially ones with multi shading colors.

Handwriting Came back to fountain pen writing after more than 10 years

For context, I'm 29, learned to write with a fountain pen at school, but in high school switched to ballpoint pens only bc of perma stained fingers and general clumsiness. A few days ago i found my old Parker pen and ink and decided to use it for my new degree to feel fancy and refined and as an adult, I no longer stain my fingers with any amount of writing! Now I'm really curious to order and try a kakuno

New Pen Day My fiancée (unknowingly) gifted me my grail pen.

Post image
988 Upvotes

So I’ve always dabbled in calligraphy, and for our upcoming wedding, I wrote everything out myself. The menus, the placeholders, the invitations, the RSVPs… I used a mix of brushpens, fountain pens, and nibs.

Amateur level but my fiancée just demanded I did it to encourage me I guess.

6 months ago i made a passing joke that with all the money I had spent on nibs and inks, I could have just bought a nice fountain pen and have a professional calligrapher write out the stuff.

My fiancee, in her own words, <<just googled for a fountain pen with a flexible nib>> and came up with this surprise.

I’m over the moon!!!

Found an unexpected beautiful aesthetic today and loved the writing experience.
Been trying some new paper and notebooks and dot grid. So purchased this Midori A5. Saw a blue cover and knew it was dot grid. I didn’t expect the paper to be blue. It’s lovely. Have my TWISBI 580 AL R sub nib, inked with Iroshizuku ku-juju. And I loved the combination! Serene and calming.

Been using it for everything these past few days. It is so good it improved my handwriting and that nib is just oof...it writes amazingly even on the cheapest of paper. My current setup shown in the picture is the p140 with a clairfontaine a5 dot grid notebook and diamine asa blue ink.

I was expecting it to be bigger to be honest but maybe i just got big monkey hands idk.

State of the Collection state of my collection atm

Hey guys! So I’ve been into this hobby for 10+ years and I feel like I am at a place where I am satisfied with what I have and thinking I don’t shouldn’t be purchasing more. Buttt of course I do have a wish list, however, decided to change my habits so that I can curate my collection a little bit better. Mostly using broader nib pens so any suggestions is for a good broad/double broad/specialty nib is welcomed. Here it goes:
1. Pelikan M1005 : As can be seen from the picture I have a specific taste when it comes to the trim colors (had Custom 823 at one point so but it never really appealed to me in any way plus didn’t find the grip comfortable enough, so I ended up selling it) Looking at you Pelikan, still waiting something comparable to Stresemann!
2. Graf von Faber Castell Bloom Ebony: The reason you see a lot of GvFC’s is that I find their sections to be extremely comfy, though I KNOW some of you may have not-so-good things to say about them being too thin.
3. Scribo La Dotta: Considering how much I’ve been enjoying my 14k flex broad nib on my Scribo Feel pen, I feel like I must get that 3B nib. Still unsure about the pattern/color though. Maybe I’ll wait for a new limited edition to drop.
4. Montblanc Heritage Rouge et Noir Coral: I have the medium nib and it writes like a dream, really. Extremely soft and cushiony writing experience unlike any other MB that I’ve tried. I used to own 2 other MB’s and found 149 to be too thick of a grip for my hand and nib was average at best, 146 on the other hand felt really balanced but nib was still not up to my liking) I know I’m late to the coral LE but watching out for newer relases from this line.
5. Sailor KoP: Japanese nibs tend to run too fine for my liking so I believe this one’s still in the air. But I know they have different specialty nibs, therefore this is a “Japan travelling exclusive purchase”. Just a little excuse for me to check out their nibs.

Thank you for reading and wow, I didn’t know I had THIS MUCH to say. Bye, friends!
