Showcase / Rice Already 1 year on EOS
Like the title says, already 1 year on EOS. I used Mandrake some 20 years ago and returned to Windows afterwards.
I built a new PC last year (before the "RAMargeddon") and decided it was time to quit Microsoft Windows. I still dual-boot Windows 11 on another SSD for some games, but I am not a big gamer so I am 85-90% of my time on Linux. Before buying parts for the PC I installed on old PCs Kubuntu, Fedora and Mint.
I finally decided to go for EOS (being new I wanted something easy to install), and I don't regret it at all. The system never broke in a year, after updates of anything else. They say rolling release is "unstable", but for what I'm doing, it's more than stable. Each time I'm updating, I'm telling to myself "it's crazy how fast pacman is versus Windows Update". A 3GB update is done in under 3-4 minutes, on Windows 11 it take at least 15 minutes, even if I update weekly.
From a complete noob I now have a Debian home server, using smb to play music on my vanilla (manually installed) minimal installation Arch PC in the garage, on another PC in the house running Solus and hosting some apps for my "productivity". I was using VirtualBox on Windows, but I learned using QEMU/KVM, and I prefer that now in place of VBox. I installed in VMs other OSes, like Solus, Void, Chimera Linux, AerynOS. I am "attracted" by less beginner friendly and "niche" distros, with other init systems and package managers. Learning how they work helps me understand Linux better. Next steps in exploration will be NixOS, Gentoo and the likes. I have a lot more to learn, I'm still a beginner, maybe one day I'll switch to one of those distros permanently, but for now Arch (EOS) is my home. I like the rolling release model, being up-to-date and not running "outdated" software.
I have plenty of RAM, so I can do VMs all I want, to learn more, local AI too. I must say that this subreddit and some others helped me a lot too! The community here is wonderful and very friendly, it helps a lot when you are a newbie, you don't "fear" to ask a question. We all were newbies some point in time.

Showcase / Rice Secure Boot ON for VALORANT, EndeavourOS riced into macOS
Spent a few hours putting together what’s probably my ideal workstation setup rn.
- Windows for gaming, EndeavourOS for everything else.
- Secure Boot enabled (yes, I do queue valorant sometimes, it is what it is). sbctl made the whole custom key signing process way less painful than expected.
- WhiteSur/MacTahoe themes + Toshy for the macOS-like workflow. Honestly surprised how usable and close to the real deal it feels.
- Swapped KRunner for Albert because I needed something closer to Spotlight. Also aesthetics.
- Ghostty + Starship + "Gruvbox Dark Hard" for the terminal. Basic ass bitch, but this combo slaps.
Finally got the setup stable, all drivers working out of the box, system feels snappy, and I still get the power of Arch without the headache. Thanks EndeavourOS. Life is good.
If anyone wants, I can drop a separate post on how I set this up.

Showcase / Rice Built a Samurai-themed Hyprlock config for my Endeavour machine (Kanji password characters + Arch install script) 🗡️🌸
Hey everyone,
I've been running Hyprland on EndeavourOS and wanted to clean up my lock screen, so I built this minimal Samurai-themed config using `hyprlock`.
The main thing I wanted was to replace the boring password dots with actual Japanese Kanji (桜 - Sakura), which renders perfectly on Wayland without any lag.
**Visuals:**
* **Kanji Passwords:** Renders 桜 on keypress.
* **Date Format:** Clean Japanese formatting (`2024年08月14日`).
* **Minimalist UI:** Absolutely no borders or background boxes on the input field, just floating characters over a dark Katana wallpaper.
Since getting CJK fonts to render correctly without tofu blocks can sometimes be annoying, I wrote a quick install script that automatically pulls `noto-fonts-cjk` and `noto-fonts`
via pacman before applying the config.
If any fellow Endeavour/Hyprland users want to use this setup or just grab the wallpaper/config files, the repo is here:
**Repo:** [hyprlock-samurai on GitHub](https://github.com/basantbansal/hyprlock-samurai)
Let me know what you think of the aesthetic!

Showcase / Rice animfetch - An animated system fetch you can work inside.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The fetch stays pinned at the top of the screen and keeps animating while your prompt and command output scroll below it.
You guys can give me feature suggestions, and I'll try to add them in upcoming versions

Showcase / Rice My first ever Hyprland rice:D
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Started using EndeavourOS(my first, and only distro) around a month or two ago(give or take). Been really surprised with how good and stable its been. I started using i3, because my drivers were a bit finicky with wayland, but i figured it out. this is only a day after using hyprland, and its my first time, so it probably wont stay like this. Tell me what you think:D
Waybar dots(NOT MINE): https://github.com/cebem1nt/dotfiles/tree/main/.config/waybar
Yes I know my waybar time is off, and am I gonna fix it? probably not.

Showcase / Rice New to Linux, figured I'd give ricing a go (admittedly very minimal)
Second monitor is vertical and just keeps track of some basic things as I'm by no means a power user, so zhuzh'd it up a bit. Can't figure out Vesktop transparency for the life of me, time to learn CSS or something :) it permanently lives up there anyway before I moved to Linux so why not make it blend in the easiest way I can, eh?

Showcase / Rice I made bezel, a per-edge-zone trackpad gesture daemon for Linux Wayland (Rust, evdev)
On macOS, apps can detect whether a swipe started from the screen edge.
Nothing on Linux Wayland did this for trackpads.
Bezel is a Rust daemon that reads raw evdev input, splits the trackpad into zones (left edge, right edge, top, bottom, corners, center) and lets you bind different gestures per zone. Compositor agnostic works on Niri, Hyprland, and should work on anything Wayland.
GitHub: https://github.com/Indra55/bezel
Still early, feedback and stars appreciated.
