[Fluff] Why do dogs steal something and then act like it's the greatest treasure in the world?

I've always found this behavior hilarious. A dog can completely ignore a sock lying on the floor, but the second someone notices it in their mouth, suddenly it's the most valuable object on Earth.

Then comes the running away, the looking back to see if you're following, and sometimes that little victory dance.

I'm curious whether this is mostly about getting attention, starting a game of chase, or simply enjoying having something they're not supposed to have.

Does your dog do this too? And what's the weirdest thing they've ever stolen?

[Misc Help] Found dog. Need over night advice.

My partner and I found a dog (we are guessing around 1yo, german shepherd rottweiler mix). We think he's been abandoned. Due to today being a holiday we can't take him to animal services. We were able to take him to the vet and see that he was microchipped. (Owners were contacted but have not returned the call) Currently he's hanging outside and is doing really well. (Actually the sweetest 70 lb pup I've ever met). However, we have a 10 year old dog and we are nervous to bring this unknown dog into the house because we don't know his vaccination status. We are also nervous to leave him outside over night until we can take him to animal services tomorrow because it's going to get down to 44 degrees with a 45% chance of rain at midnight.

Any advice? Do we bring him in even though we don't know that he's vaccinated? Do we leave him outside with blankets?

Ps: Unfortunately we can't keep him because we rent and both german shepherds and rotty's are banned by our landlords.

Update! We were able to secure a kennel so we are able to bring him in! Thank you all for your advice and for your sensitivity too!

[Misc Help] Newly adopted 2 year old

Hi all,

Sure a lot relate but just looking for some advice and reassurance.
I adopted the sweetest terrier/PB mix from the pound yesterday (10/11) and am just full of anxiety and regret. My old life is no more, as a person of routine and comfort and hating change, it has been a lot on me even though it’s been 1 day.
She’s great on leash, no accidents inside as she’s holding everything exceptionally well. Doesn’t fuss with other dogs unless they instigate. She’s great, this feelings is all from me and nothing with her because she really is so great.
I understand there’s an adjustment period for us both but for now she is basically unable to be able away from me. She seems to be ok if she knows I’m out of the house and not just in another room, that’s when she’d whine and cry.
I just got her a crate today and I’m just looking for any tips, tricks, advice, words of encouragement and reassurance.

[Training Foundations] What Skills Should a Pet Dog Learn to Cohabitate With Service Dog?

I have a service dog in training, and recently we just adopted a pet dog. He’s still very new, so right now it’s just adjusting, getting to know us, etc. But I’m wanting to know some good skills that would be good to learn so that there’s no potential issues with my dog tasking?

The tasks my dog knows are:
- Deep pressure therapy
- Laying under my legs to raise them
- Faint response
- Item retrieval
- Behavior interruption (crying & leg shaking)
- Opening & closing doors

The new dog seems pretty aloof, he gets along well with my SDiT. He’s low energy, pretty low drive. Just kind of a couch potato kind of dog.

Howdy! I just got a new great Pyrnesse Bulldog mix from the pound, we're still in the trial period right now but ao far shes been lovely, the cuddliest girl ive had, and about 2 years old but the past two days shes shit in the house, yesterday I juat found a pile and cleaned it and it was whatever but today I got up around 10 to no messes, I brought her outside immediately and she went from there we hung out until I went to get lunch around noon, got back around 1, she met me at the door looking guilty so I knew something was up, either way I took her for her daily walk got back and searched the house and she had gone

To make a long story short I was wondering if any of yall knew what was up, does she just need to go out more? Is she used to being out a certain time so cant hold it, is it somehow a dominace thing cuz wr have a cat in the household aswell, shelter said she was house trained and she doesnr piss in the house so im just a bit confused on this-

[Behavior Problems] Lab co dependant on my husband

We have a 3 year (fixed) old lab. She is a great dog but recently we’ve noticed she has a frantic like energy around my husband. She is obsessed with him. She screams when she hears his vehicle pull onto our street, and she cannot settle when he’s around she just follows him anxiously waiting for attention. I understand she loves him but it’s seeming a bit more anxious than sweet lately. He puts his stuff down etc before greeting her and makes sure she’s sitting calmly before saying hi and petting her but even when he’s home for the day she is still extremely anxious and frantic around him. Any suggestions on what we can do to make her a bit calmer or relaxed and not NEED his attention? It’s a lot.

[Misc Help] Hund in Flugzeugkabine

Danke schon einmal !!

[Misc Help] Dog is absolutely obsessed with licking my hand

My 11 year old dog started this habit of licking my hand a few months back. She will lick my hand for hours if I let her, until her tongue literally runs dry. It’s not the sweat on my hand, or any food, because the still does it after Ive washed my hands. It’s to the point where she will physically resist me if I try pushing her head away or moving my hand away from her, just so she can keep licking my hand. She does not do this to any of my family members who live with me. Does she just really like me? She’s kind of neurotic so I’ve just been writing it off as her being weird.

[Enrichment] Oinking Toy Recommendations

Hi! My dog loves oinking toys; however, she manages to destroy them. I bought a cheap hippo one a few days ago and she destroyed it within 30 minutes. Bought one of the more expensive pigs a while back and same deal.

I'm looking for recommendations for a very durable oinking toy. She tends to chew on ears and thin ridges, so we try to avoid them when possible. Thanks!

[Misc Help] Stray dogs

I'm Australian, and whilst I'm sure we have stray dogs, they are fairly rare in suburban areas. Even when I've lived and worked in more rural areas, you see a dog roaming, it's very unusual. You either try and catch it, or report it. As the assumption is, it's not a stray with no home, it's an escaped dog with owners looking for it.

I just got asked on a different thread why that is, and I don't really know!

So I thought, let's ask the brain trust. Where are you from, and do you have stray dogs roaming where you live? Why, why not?

[Misc Help] Transporting a shelter dog to their new home - what should I know before I go?

I have an opportunity to help transport a shelter dog to their new home. I would be doing this as a private volunteer, donating my time to help make this happen. The drive would be 4 hours one way, and I’m considering asking if the adopter could meet me halfway. What do I need to consider before I go? Here are some things I’ve already thought about:

* Travel crate
* Well-fitting harness or collar, leash
* Other supplies - like a towel/blanket, paper towels, cleaning supplies, poop bags, water, collapsible bowl
* Plan for breaks, avoiding busy areas
* Knowing that this dog may be anxious, scared, shut down, a flight risk? What happens if for whatever reason they run off and the dog gets injured or causes an injury?
* This adopter seems genuine, but what if they flake out? Guess it’s my dog now? 😅
* Would it be wrong to ask for a donation? Or some kind of “collateral” so I know that this person is genuine, serious, and that this dog is going to a good home?

Anything else or any other pointers? TIA

[Equipment] Seeking feedback on the Tavo Crispin Pet Travel Crate (for my anxious rescue dog)

I have a 35 lb rescue dog who has recently become anxious on car rides (after 5+ years being a champ at road trips). I'm considering experimenting with the Tavo Crispin crate, to see if it might help my dog feel less anxious if he's resting in a enclosed soft space during car rides.

Does anyone have experience with this particular dog crate? Is it practical, safe (company says it's crash-tested), easy to use? Or is it an expensive, complicated, glorified dog carrier?

Also, has anyone used this crate as a dog carrier? If so, how easy/hard is it to carry and travel with it while walking?

[Behavior Problems] Help

I have a 5 year old husky who is on gabapentin and trazodone 2x daily when needed, but it seems that it wears off quickly, so he starts hawling down the house.

Has anyone else had this?
im at work 9 hours per day, this happened about a year ago when my other dog died. He’s just been so unsettled since.

I don’t know what else I can do, I don’t want to rehome him

[Vent] Extremely anxious dog and I’m riddled with guilt

I feel like a horrible person. My dog has only ever had her nails trimmed once, when she was spayed. Every time we go to the vet, she gets a double dose of trazadone plus gabapentin and she is totally unphased. She won’t let the vet touch her. She tries to bite, pees and poops everywhere, just a total nightmare for everyone involved. I have tried a nail file, and a scratch pad. She won’t let me touch her paw for more than half a second and she won’t use the scratch pad.

She doesn’t act like her nails bother her and we do walk on pavement every day, but I feel guilty about this all the time. I am at a loss on what to do.

[Equipment] Stair helper for arthritic dog

My 70-pound 9-year-old dog is having terrible joint pain when going up and down the stairs of my brownstone apt. I’m a small 100-pound woman. Does anyone have a solution for helping my dog up the steps without pain? I’m seeing carry case type things but am I meant to lift them? My dog is heavy for me to carry. Do ramps work? Let me know! We have 3 sets of stairs in our home

[Misc Help] Safe 4’ leash for little dog?

I ordered a “box stitched” 3/8-inch x 4-foot leash, and it was glued with zero stitching. I can’t believe this is a thing.

My 10 lbs mini poodle has a 6’ leash, which I roll short around my wrist, but I have arthritis and it’s difficult and keeps slipping from my grip.

I don’t want a wide leash with big dog hardware, because it would be too heavy knocking against her. If anyone has a recommendation for a 4’, 3/8” leash that isn’t glued, I appreciate it so much. Thanks.

[Misc Help] Jowly dog owners, does your pup drip water everywhere after drinking?

Hey everyone, looking for some help from people with jowly breeds.

If you have a Frenchie, Bulldog, Boxer, Mastiff, etc… does your dog leave water trails after drinking? The chin drips, the puddles on the floor, the wet chest, all of it.

I’m exploring something that could help reduce the dripping after they drink. Not selling anything, just trying to understand how common this is before I put time/money into developing it.

Would something that helps stop the post‑drink dripping be useful for your dog?
And have any bowls or mats actually helped?

Thanks in advance, any experiences help a ton.
