Different kind of request and not sure where to go

Ok so I have an idea of what I want to get my girlfriend for Christmas. Its going to be an outline of the state we live in with roads connecting the towns we've lived in with them convening at our current home. Right now what I want to do is create a clean image of what I want so I can present it to a wood worker to make the final product. I have both of the images on Google maps pulled up, but I would like some help overlaying them into one image and getting rid of the all of the other background junk. Just a simple outline with two "roads" on it. Yes I know I can use AI but I REALLY don't want to have to use that.

Is there a tool that can help me with this or do I reach out to a local artist to have them just draw it up? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Just a note: I'm not asking anyone here for a commission, just looking for a tool to help me with my request

Ghost town mapping

Hi! I’m in the research phase of writing a book about a ghost town in eastern California. As part of it, I want to create accurate maps of the town and its mines.

For the mines, I have been using the USGS MRDS database, which is unfortunately inaccurate in the area, so next time I’m there, I’ll be getting GPS coordinates on all the mine features. This is within my capabilities to do.

What’s a bit beyond my capabilities is the town itself. I plan on finding foundations and comparing those to historical photos (of which there are few.) There are very few structures left. I got the USGS lidar data, but filtering out the vegetation in the area is difficult because it’s largely sagebrush, and I am a complete novice at this.

Can anyone suggest methods for finding the locations of historical buildings (town was active until 1915ish) either using publicly available data or other methods? It would be an absolute amazing help in getting my book up to the quality I want.

Ancythra - The Ever-Expanding Pocket Dimension - (Campaign Setting) (No AI)

Ancythra - The Ever-Expanding Pocket Dimension

I created the original Ancythra map in 2021, and decided recently it needed a “glow up” (pun intended!). So, I went about remastering it over the past couple of weeks, putting roughly another 10 hours of work into it.

The dimensions of the original map were 1200x1600, which is pretty small compared to what I usually make now. But, if I were to upscale it, that would require re-doing many parts of it from scratch. Plus, some of the methods I used back then don’t upscale very nicely anyway, such as the way I used to do the mountains in Photoshop.

So rather than re-do it all, I decided to lean a little more into a sort of “pixel art map” style.

What does that mean exactly? Once I was finished remastering the map, I exported and rendered it at 400% with no re-sampling (what Photoshop does when re-sizing an image). This made each 1x1 pixel become a 4x4 pixel block. Now the map's dimensions are 4800x6400, technically speaking. This gives it a sort of retro, pixel-art type look when fully zoomed in.

As always, no AI was used.

Lore:

Lore-wise, Ancythra began as a regular Pocket Dimension, which is another dimension that is usually rather small and self-contained.

But this particular dimension has somehow grown over time, just as our real-life universe does. Constantly expanding outward. More, and more, sometimes absorbing other pocket dimensions into itself. This has resulted in some odd acquisitions, strange fusions, and plenty of magical weirdness that has taken root in this ever-expanding dimension.

Over time, Ancythra has expanded and mutated. It has grown to the size of a small continent, floating and rotating in the Astral Plane of existence. Pieces often break off as it grows, but the rate of growth still exceeds the rate of loss.

It also has portals to other Planes as well, making Ancythra something of a "cross-roads" between other worlds and dimensions. Not unlike the City of Sigil in the Forgotten Realms, probably known best from Planescape: Torment.

This map would fit well into most existing DnD and tabletop RPG campaigns, as it’s a separate location from the main worlds you are already playing in. A small world that can be added in as a new place to visit, almost like an “expansion pack” for your ongoing game (Shivering Isles, anyone?). At least, that’s how I like to think of it :)

There are additional versions available here, as well as an editable Photoshop file to swap out the text however you like, and a few other toggle-able layers. More details in the link: https://www.patreon.com/stoneward13/posts/ancythra-ever-171702141

I hope you like the map, and have a good weekend! :)

Two experimental map generators: settlement layouts and terrain from planetary to local scale

I'm more on the procedural generation side but I do it for maps so I post also here :)

I've been reviving two personal procedural mapping projects and reworking them in Rust with AI coding tools. I wanted to share some actual application captures and get feedback on their cartographic presentation.

Magna Urbis generates pre-modern settlements and their surrounding landscapes. It explores organic street patterns, medina-inspired layouts, and planned cities, with different map styles. Its starting point was a Python port of Watabou's TownGeneratorOS. The images show the TypeScript prototype, which has a free browser demo and SVG/PNG exports. A Rust/WASM engine with GPU acceleration for selected stages is under development and will also get an online build.

Neural Earth combines World Orogen's planetary geography with InfiniteDiffusion / Terrain Diffusion's learned terrain refinement. It includes relief, seasonal climate, biomes, soils, and other geographic layers. The model generates elevation data rather than a finished map image; shading and cartographic layers are rendered separately.

It runs locally for now because neural inference needs a GPU backend. An inference port is planned to investigate browser use through WASM and GPU acceleration. No browser-only inference demo is available yet.

The screenshots are prototype outputs, and the climate and terrain aim for plausible fictional geography. I'm still working on both projects, and their eventual integration is my main goal.

I'd appreciate feedback on readability: relief shading, visual hierarchy between roads and buildings, and whether the geographic layers communicate useful information. Specific examples of confusing or implausible features are especially helpful.

I turned real places into 3D 🌍

I’ve been building Nexterra3D to do exactly that.

You pick a location on the map, and Nexterra3D can turn real-world geographic data into a 3D environment with terrain, buildings and roads.

No manually modeling hundreds of buildings.
No spending hours recreating a city by hand.

Just choose a location and generate it. ⚡

Under the hood, I’m working with data from OpenStreetMap, Copernicus DEM and Google Open Buildings, combined with my own generation and optimization pipeline.

Some of the things Nexterra3D currently focuses on:

🏔️ Real-world terrain generation
🏙️ Procedural buildings & roads
⚡ Hardware-accelerated 3D rendering
🎚️ Very Low → Ultra quality settings
🤖 AI-assisted generation
📦 GLB / GLTF / OBJ / FBX / 3MF / Heightmap export
🎮 Workflows for game development and 3D projects
🛠️ Windows desktop application

The goal isn't to make another map viewer.

I want Nexterra3D to become a tool where you can take a real place on Earth and turn it into something you can actually build with.

It’s still in beta and I’m actively developing it, so I’d genuinely love some feedback from people who work with Blender, Unreal, Unity, Roblox, GIS, procedural generation or 3D environments.

👀 Try it / take a look:

What would you build if you could generate any real-world location as a 3D environment?

Would this point diagram fit your reports without a basemap?

Post image

I’m exploring demand for finished point diagrams for reports. Would the attached format fit an actual report you prepare, or would you need a basemap or editable source?

This example contains 141 simulated points, five categories and short labels. An AI-built prototype produced the A3, 300-dpi JPEG without manual label placement. Separate automated checks and AI image review checked the output. Only this fixed synthetic example has been tested. It has no basemap, geocoding, geographic verification or editable GIS file.

If this limited format would be useful, would you request a quote at a proposed £25 GBP per image, or make it yourself with QGIS or another tool? What task would it save you?

This is a demand check, not an open ordering service. Please describe the use case only; don’t share private files, home addresses or sensitive coordinates.

Meanwhile Map

When reading a history book, I sometimes have a hard time internalizing when the events are taking place. Sure, I know the dates, but it takes a bit of effort to put them in a broader context, to understand where in history they belong. What usually helps is to put them in relation to other contemporaneous events.

To play around with this, I've made Meanwhile Map. You select a date and a time window, then scroll around the world map to see a list of contemporaneous events.

For example, yes, the Mughal Empire was founded by Babur in the 1520s, but it paints a different picture in my head when I see that this roughly coincides with Cortés' capture of Tenochtitlan, or that it's close to the Siege of Vienna. Example link: https://meanwhilemap.com/#y=1520&m=1&span=120&off=founded,people&map=1.4/25/0

On the technical side, the app is a single static web page. It uses Wikidata for data (via SPARQL) and OpenHistoricalMap to show the events on the political map of the time. It's open source (https://github.com/ea/meanwhilemap/tree/main), vibe coded as an experiment.  All processing is client-side, and no data is tracked other than simple visitor counts.
