COTA: did you see this… bike??

Post image
31 Upvotes

I was setting up for the tailgate today Sept 29th when two tandem bikes joined together by a piece of metal passed me by. It was manned by four people pedaling really hard. I tried illustrating it to the best of my ability lol.

I got home and now I’m asking myself if I really saw this or if I imagined it. Please tell me I’m not crazy!

STOLEN BIKE - 1986 Schwinn Mirada - East Riverside/Oltorf Area

Hey y'all.

My blue 1986 Schwinn Mirada that I JUST got (hadn't even ridden it once and was excited to get a bike again) was stolen from just outside my door in my apartment complex sometime most likely between Sunday (Sep 27) evening and Monday (Sep 28) evening. It was locked to the fence/railing just outside our door with a cable lock. When I went to leave for work Monday evening, both the bike and lock were gone.

Schwinn Mirada, "Glacier" blue, 26" wheels, vintage rigid mountain bike. It has yellow-ish Schwinn/Mirada decals, Weinmann rims, Shimano Light Action rear derailleur, Shimano FD-Z204 front derailleur, and a block bottle cage. Noticeable age/wear consistent with an original 1980s bike. I've filed a police report and registered it stolen with Bike Index and Project 529.

Serial: 6081170 (second digit is somewhat faint/worn)

APD Report: 2026-9025870

This bike has been in my family since the 1980s and has sentimental value to me. If you see it please send a photo/location or DM me.

Thank you!

COTA Bike Night Smells

Anyone else experience riders wearing too much cologne?? Not sure why they think they need it - but this fall has been filthy with too much cologne applied.

r/BikingATX • • 14d ago

What time will COTA actually end tonight?

The site says sunset, which is 7:20ish tonight, but it's usually not actually dark until a while after. I wouldn't be able to make it until 6:45 so debating if it's worth it

Im coming in for a few days for work, just wondering is there anywhere other than Mellow Johnny's?

*EDIT* - Not looking at local bike share/citi bike.

Just curious to see different rental inventory before committing.

Thanks!

South Mopac Expressway Bike Tag #1517

#1516 was at 30.172070,-97.888797, where the SH45 trail crosses Archeleta.

(Amusingly, there wasn't much to go on the previous picture, but what finally did it was the curved street lights in the background, where I only know of one road with curved street lights ...)

And here's the new #1517 -- the ramp on the right is new and a big improvement over what was there before.

Routes from Downtown to St. Elmo?

I'm starting a new job in a couple weeks that's down by Still Austin on St. Elmo - any advice on routes? Google Maps puts me on South Congress but my understanding is it's still a safety nightmare.

9/26 Saturday Morning Caffeine Cruise

Last chance summer swim!
Fall is technically here, but Austin doesn’t play that way. It’s still hot and we’re still out riding bikes. We’ll start the day at Frankenbike to browse the available items, then head to Givens park since the pool closes after this weekend. We’ll end the day at Loudmouth for some pizza.
We might get some rain next week, so get outdoors with us this weekend while you can!

Leader: Brenda A
Start: Bike Texas for Frankenbike, 900 Springdale Rd (https://www.facebook.com/events/1936104917086633)
Wheels down 11:45am-ish

Mid: Givens Neighborhood Pool 3811 E 12th - last weekend that this pool is open for the season!
End: Loudmouth 1209 Rosewood Ave, Austin, TX 78702

Gravel: Possibly Light gravel, but nothing road bikes can't handle
Bring: Swimsuit, sunscreen, lights, locks, ID, and money for snacks/drinks.

OSA / Puryear closed

Anybody been down here: https://www.kxan.com/traffic/traffic-projects/old-san-antonio-road-puryear-road-closure-planned/

It's perhaps a couple weeks out from me wanting to start occasional south-bound long rides and OSA is the main way I get out of town so this is obviously concerning.

Easton Park is terrible

That entire development (which is huge getting huge-er) is the worst for parking in the bike lines. Everywhere around the school is the worst. But every sub-section of the development where there’s bike lanes has people parking in them ALL the time.
It seems hopeless that there would be any enforcement action on it. Ugh.

group ride 44th Annual Moonlight Cruze Bike Ride Saturday night, 09/26 (09/27 2:00am), Pfluger Ped Bridge

It's that time of year again, and the ride you've been waiting for is coming ... the 44th Annual Full Moon Cruze Bicycle Ride!

This year, the ride will happen on Saturday night/Sunday morning, September 26th/27th, 2026. We shall assemble at about 1:30 am at the James D. Pfluger Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge and we'll ride out at about 2:30 am.

DO NOT BE CONFUSED BY THE DATE! This ride happens on Saturday night/Sunday morning, the night of the 26th and/or the morning of the 27th! Take a nap if you need one, but set an alarm so you don't forget!

If you only make one bicycle ride a year -- this is the one to make!

As always, the schedule for Austin's full moon rides can be found at http://cycling.frenzied.us/full-moon-rides

You can also follow us on Facebook, in the ATX (((MOON))) group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/155520658757

The ride is about 19 miles, and here is the route: https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/50119986

The pace is whatever you want it to be -- some will race between the stop points, but most will take it easy. Either works.

As always, ride at your own risk, having lights on your bike at night is a good idea and it's always a good idea to bring something to drink and enough gear to change a flat. This is not a supported ride, but we definitely do try to not leave a rider behind.

Fixed Gear

I’ve always wanted to build up a fixed gear from an old road bike frame but don’t know where to find one w horizontal dropouts. Does anyone have a good spot? I’ve looked on Facebook marketplace and can’t find any. I’d love to find one at a local shop. I live pretty far from Yellow Bike but would make the trip if they would have one. I know a lot of this is up to random chance and timing so I figured asking here wouldn’t hurt. Also, if any local shops throw them together in their free time I’d happily skip the build and just buy one from them. Not interested in the cheapo heavy ones sold at box stores. Thanks so much for any help.

Anyone know what's going on with the North Lamar corridor project?

I noticed on the project page that status has changed to:

Status: Complete, scope reduced

https://www.speakupaustin.org/nlamar

I can't tell what's actually committed based on the linked documents. I bike between Yager and Parmer regularly and can confirm work is ongoing adding a stretch of sidewalk along the west side of Lamar there. Not sure how far it will extend either direction.

Free Shoes?

I have some size 47 Specialized MTB shoes that I only wore a few times. They're too narrow for my super-wide feet, so I've just had them in the closet for a few years. If you think they'll fit you, I'm happy to meet at Epoch Coffee on North Loop to give them to you.

Cheers!
