FluxForge: free Windows app for backing up floppies with a Greaseweazle

If you have a Greaseweazle and a box of Amiga or ST disks, I'd appreciate some testers for FluxForge. No command line needed: it installs the Greaseweazle tools for you, shows a live track map while reading, and tells you exactly which tracks failed on a worn disk. You can capture raw flux for preservation and turn it into an ADF or ST later.

Starglider 2 – “Stardrive Activated” (blog post)

I've written a post on the early history of Argonaut, the making of Starglider 2, and the response from the games press of the time (including predictions it would shift a lot more STs).

I'm blogging about the history of popular games in the UK by writing about each sales chart #1 in order and just reached Starglider 2, so I got a real sense of how impressive it looked up against the Spectrum games of the time I've been playing until now!

Diskette Toolkit — free Windows tool for Atari ST (and other) floppies, looking for testers

Hi all, I've made a free, open-source Windows tool for working with floppy disks and disk images, inspired by FastCopy:

  • back up disks to .ST / .MSA / .IMG (and flux .SCP/.HFE with Greaseweazle), write images back with verification
  • format for Atari ST (incl. 800–900 KB formats with an internal drive + fdrawcmd.sys), PC, MSX, Mac, Amiga CrossDOS…
  • surface test with a live FastCopy-style sector map, FAT check and safe repair
  • boot disks (FreeDOS, MS-DOS, Atari AUTO folder, Amiga bootblock)
  • works with USB floppy drives, internal drives (fdrawcmd.sys) and Greaseweazle

Download: https://github.com/Warysek/DisketteToolkit/releases

It's a test version — I design and test it on my own hardware, the code is written with AI assistance. The exe isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen or some antivirus may warn about it (code signing via SignPath is in progress). I'd really appreciate feedback, especially which USB drives work with 720 KB disks and how it behaves with Greaseweazle and internal drives. Bug reports are welcome here or in GitHub Issues. Thanks!

Yes, the original 1983 laserdisc classic, running full-screen at 25 FPS with sound on real Atari hardware with a SidecarTridge Multi-device.

Now available for free through the Booster app. It features the original arcade gameplay, joystick and keyboard controls, customizable options, and persistent high scores.

In the video, I show it running on my Atari STE, including footage from the actual monitor.

Hope you enjoy seeing Dirk back in action on the Atari ST!

Xenon 2: Megablast (the ST original) now plays in the browser, with an optional 4× HD / 60 fps mode and an autopilot

I've spent the last months on a side project: the Atari ST version of Xenon 2: Megablast, running in the browser. Play: https://dmnet.st It's the original 68000 game running in a modified Hatari compiled to WebAssembly. Instead of showing the ST's framebuffer, the emulator hooks the game's own draw routines and redraws every sprite on the GPU, which made a few extras possible:

  • Classic mode: the original 320×200, pixel for pixel
  • Hi-res mode: every sprite upscaled 4× and interpolated between the game's 15 updates a second for smooth 60 fps motion (whole game in hi-res on YouTube)
  • Autopilot: a controller that reads the game's memory and flies the ship; it has finished all five levels without losing a life
  • Save/load: five slots with screenshots, kept in your browser
  • Record & replay: record a game, then step through it frame by frame in the replay inspector, including what the autopilot saw and decided
  • Works on desktop and phones (touch controls), no install

There are also write-ups of what got reverse engineered along the way (object system, sprite formats, the sound driver that squeezes Bomb the Bass onto the YM), some of them interactive.

Full disclosure: this was also an experiment in working with an AI coding assistant, and the site keeps an honest log of where that worked and where it really didn't.

Feedback welcome, especially from anyone who played it back in the day!

SemaTor Hybrid Emulator 1.490 released

F11 for Save/loading menu etc
F12 for Settings
Shift + F12 for checking how the game is running

This isn't 100% compatible with all games! This doesn't use TOS, nor is it a traditional emulator, so that will take time though compared to last public release, the list has grown a lot.

Made with what I know about games, and how they run + a huge amount of the grunt work from various different AI models.

What you get:

- Boots straight from your disk images: ST, MSA, STX (copy-protected dumps), HFE and SCP, zipped or not

- Per-game enhancements: widescreen 16:9 / 21:9 views, speed options, cheats and fixes for specific games

- CRT and picture options: scanlines, masks, curvature, glow, or sharp pixels

- Low input lag: run-ahead, plus frame generation for smoothness

- Save states and rewind

- SemaOS: a GEM-style desktop to browse and launch your library, with disk drives you can drag games onto, a jukebox and a YM2149 synth

- Accurate sound: a detailed YM2149 model

Linux and Windows, with an Android build in progress. Still in testing, so expect rough edges.

Atari ST Ultimate Black Edition everything inc emulator

Hi.

I'm looking for some kind of 'ultimate' ST emulator install, like one of the old Windows XP ultimate cds. I.e. all setup, various softwares, a really demo / livecd type experiene to show me how good the ST / TT / Falcon could be.

I used to drool over the high-res screenshots of Multi Tos or Mint or with the icons and the colours running some pro software. I soon migrated to a win 95 PC and never got to try this out.

Is there anything like this I can download to my PC to finally experience such a sight. I'd love to see a sorted desktop environment with some office sofware, layout software a bit of music and some games . If this isn't available is there a recommended list of the pieces I would need to get this working. i.e. emulator version, desktop software etc ? Thanks all Running MAC and PC here.

Atari ST(e) to Falcon video change?

Hi, the ST(e) video output was 15hz, seems like the Falcon was 30Hz, why did they change the video output as the resulting resolutions were the same, the end result was the lack of support of the existing (expensive) Atari displays

What is ST like on the MiSTer FPGA?

I'm currently running Hatari on PC-based hardware, but I'm wondering if I should get a MiSTer.

I haven't had much luck researching this - most of the reviews come with the caveat that the person testing the system didn't have an ST back in the day, so they were not familiar with the machine.

I thought it would be best to ask some actual ST users instead of MiSTer users.

I'm already hesitant, because I don't have as much time to play games as I used to, so I rely quite heavily on save states, and some of the research I did manage to do suggests that the ST core may not be very polished.

I still feel drawn to the MiSTer though - like FPGA is the next logical step in my setup.

Is it worth the upgrade (is it even an upgrade?) or should I just stick to emulators?

SemaTor is out (Hybrid Emulator/Translation layer) Atari ST with enhancements to old games

Post image

https://sirbaron.github.io/SemaTor/

https://discord.gg/bMF59myb7 for Discord support/suggestions

Remember because it's not a Traditional Emulator compatibility will not be 100%, but the gain is that we can improve older games (while having the option for the original experience)

I can't guarantee the Windows version works as good as the Linux version due to my own testing, but yeah, if any issues arrive Github or discord is best place to poke me. Also if you have any requests for games to be Enhanced.

What’s included

  • Desktop library with cover and list views, search, favourites and recently played games.
  • Game-folder and cover selection through a file browser.
  • Individual and bulk artwork fetching.
  • Gold ENHANCED badges for supported titles, with per-game options.
  • CRT presets, bezel effects and picture controls.
  • Optional frame generation, depending on your GPU and graphics backend.
  • Four manual save slots with previews, plus rewind and session features where supported.
  • F11 session controls and F12 settings.

Top 10 Most Authentic Arcade Game Ports to the ST Series (according to ChatGPT)

As an arcade gamer from the era, I wondered what ChatGPT's take on the top 10 best arcade ports (of all time) to the ST series was. Here's what it came up with:

# Game Era Platform Why it's here
1 Joust 1987 ST The gold standard for a commercial port. The physics, momentum, flapping, enemy behaviour and overall feel survive exceptionally well.
2 Defender 2025 ST/STE/Falcon The modern benchmark: based on Williams' published 6809 source and original assets, rather than merely reverse-engineering the gameplay. (GitHub)
3 Robotron 2084 1987 ST A superb conversion of an extraordinarily demanding game. The ST version supports joystick and mouse and retains the frantic gameplay; contemporary ST material described it as a near-perfect conversion. (Atarimania)
4 Bubble Bobble 1987 ST One of the great 16-bit arcade conversions: levels, enemies, mechanics and two-player experience are remarkably intact.
5 Rainbow Islands 1990 ST Graftgold's conversion is an extraordinary piece of work. It captures the arcade game rather than merely approximating it.
6 Pang 1990 ST The physics and timing are the important bits, and they survived beautifully. A superb example of a relatively modest ST game that feels like the coin-op.
7 Pac-Mania STe 2015 STe A modern rewrite that shows what the STe could really do: hardware scrolling, Blitter, DMA sound and overscan.
8 Rod-Land 1991 ST Exceptionally faithful arcade gameplay, graphics and level structure. One of the late commercial-era standouts.
9 PuckMan 2026 STe The newest entry—and a very serious one. A modern STe implementation specifically targeting the original Puck Man/Pac-Man experience.
10 R-Type 1987 ST Despite its compromises, the essential Irem experience—levels, weapons, enemy patterns and difficulty—is remarkably well preserved.

This is a bit of an AI slop post, but how did you think it did? What did it miss? What do you disagree with?
