SUPPORT New to Arch

I plan to switch from Windows to Arch (Dual Booting for now due to genshin and wuwa), I have tried other distros before deciding on Arch

I doubt it matters but... 16gb ddr5, 256 ssd, ryzen 7 170 H

I have been suggested to modify Arch Installation from scratch rathwr than use a desktop environment due to reasons for switching

Few doubts:

- Arch Wiki is good I can see based on the basics I know but its too concise on various (if not all) topics I have seen for absolute newbies so I am kinda stuck on its installation guide... If someone has a decent alternative or something like a tutorial on basic stuff please do provide..

- I dont really know how much of from scratch are we talking when we mean modifying from scratch.. I want to know how many different things I should learn to install before starting... like drivers, the basic environments, Keyboard, wifi, gpu drivers etc

- If there is a good walkthrough which I can go through on YouTube for a arch installation fully manual pls share (If possible one in which there is not much disparity from how we install other stuff cuz yk like I may install another alternative than what they used)

- I have not started any test and trial with Arch terminal yet, cuz im not aure which VM to use... I am a bit familiar with VMWare but not sure if thats a good idea, any suggestion?

- Also if comfortable, please drop down a few things u suggest I can use be it subeddits, YouTuber, Your setup, etc

- I would love to know if there's a Megathread or something for similar doubts

QUESTION Is there a correct order when it comes to installing and setting up a boot loader and creating a UKI?

So I have been doing a bunch of arch installs in a VM. Just familiarizing myself with it and using many different boot loaders and seeing how to set them up.

I recently got into creating a UKI and then just booting directly from it instead of using a boot loader.

After successfully doing that I decided to try using boot loaders and also a UKI.

I did it for systemd boot and Limine. For both I installed the boot loader first then created the UKI. Then I did both again except starting with creating the UKI and then installing the boot loader after.

I was able to get it working on all four different ways. But I wasn't sure if there was an optimal or more correct way of doing it.

Should I always be installing the boot loader first and then creating the UKI after? Does it depend on which boot loader I use? Or does it not matter so long as I understand how they both work together and set it up accordingly?

QUESTION Can I toggle secureboot on/off and boot into win11/arch from bios, will it damage nvram or something?

I have a Dell gaming laptop Intel CPU + nvidia gpu I was thinking of dual booting arch+windows11 I absolutely don't want to mess with my existing bios secure boot configuration or keys using sbctl(I know I have to turn off secureboot during arch installation)

I plan to toggle secure boot off then boot into arch, then when I want to use windows 11 i plan to enable it again from my bios(To play games obv)

My question is does changing secure boot to on/off frequently and booting into OS damage the NVRAM, linux kernel, bootloaders of the laptop? And is it ok to use arch like that?

I know I am being conservative but I had already used arch+secure boot using sbctl+nvidia drivers in a different laptop(so my bios was in custom mode), then when I tried to completely remove arch Linux including restoring factory secure boot keys in my bios then turned on secure boot, I was stuck in a boot loop. I absolutely don't want to take any risk with this new laptop.

I experimented on a different laptop with win11, disabled secureboot, installed arch Linux KDE plasma systemd-boot, UKI using archinstall(seperate efi partition for arch instead of using the windows one), shutdown, turned on bios secure boot setup mode, booted in arch(windows was not detected in systemd-boot menu but I don't care cuz I had habit of going to bios to change OS in my previous win11+debian setup), used sbctl method, shutdown, turned on secureboot(my bios now shows custom mode instead of standard mode), successfully booted into arch. I could even boot into windows from my bios

Now I want to remove arch completely and revert back, I entered bios secure boot menu, I wanted to change the custom mode back to standard mode, there was a restore factory keys toggle, i pressed that and the mode changed back to standard mode, now when I set windows boot manager in 1st priority it gets into a boot loop, screen flashes and laptop restarts continuously after showing the initial lenovo logo during power on with a "Reset" white text in the top left, i had to press power button for 10sec to shutdown... Now windows won't boot with secureboot on... I entered bios, disabled secureboot, now windows boots... But now it beats the whole purpose... I cant play windows multiplayer games anymore... Deleted arch partitions, installed debian 13 kde plasma, in the discover software center app it showed 3 microsoft certificates, i click update all, then reboot, turn on secure boot, still windows fails to boot and gets stuck in a boot loop where it restarts after showing the initial lenovo logo

QUESTION is Encrypting with LUKS and setting up sbctl necessary for a secure arch linux experience?

My friend who uses arch linux mentioned how easy it is to bypass a default wiki installation setup unless you use secure boot and LUKS enabled?

Assuming my threat model is literally just similar to that of a common man, does it really matter if my laptop can run unencrypted arch linux with secure boot disabled? I have read the wiki and I may be able to implement this, but I need more time and practice to get it done right.

Heya!

So basically: I have used Nobara linux before, but I swapped back to windows, however, I am thinking about maybe changing over to arch for some reason, mainly due to me wanting to customize my interface

problem is though is that I don't know much about terminals, so should I try arch, and if so, are there any tips I can be given?

(I mainly use my pc for gaming, maybe MINOR coding here and there, but mainly just gaming)

SUPPORT Creating a arch install script and having trouble with arch not booting with grub when grub already exist.

Hello, Arch Linux Wizards

Github URL for the install script Hardware: Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen5 AMD

I'm going to describe my problem the best I can. The bootloader portion consist of these lines of code: ```sh IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH=/boot pacman -Sy --needed --noconfirm grub efibootmgr dosfstools mtools

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory="$IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH" --bootloader-id=GRUB --force --recheck

grub-mkconfig -o "$IN_CHROOT_BOOT_PATH/grub/grub.cfg" ``` So what I did was go into the BIOS and do a full factory reset, which deleted any bootloaders so I had a clean start. I ran the code, everything looked fine, so I rebooted the system, and it booted up just fine and I can access Arch Linux. After that, without doing anything else, I ran the script in the Arch Linux live environment again because I wanted to test it a second time. This time it did not go into the GRUB bootloader. Instead, I guess it errored out and went straight to the BIOS boot menu, asking me to select either GRUB or nvme0n1, but both just brought me back to the BIOS boot menu.

I asked both Claude and Grok, and both told me to add the --removable flag to grub-install, which did fix the problem. But I guess I’m just being a little OCD, because I want to know why the first run worked but not the second.

NOTE: Originally I didn't have --force and --recheck flags added but Claude and Grok told me to try it but it did not work. I know to not run AI suggestion willy nilly but I am desperate and I am ok with it since the laptop doesnt have any important info on it.

SUPPORT | SOLVED Discord silent disconnect

So, I've been having an issue that's somehow only on Arch that involves Discord, no matter which Discord is used (client, open-source client, or website). The issue is that Discord silently disconnects until I check Discord and it reconnects.

I researched the issue and I've only seen 2 solutions for it, which are adding pcie_aspm=off and igb.EEE=0 to the kernel parameters, and opening Discord with the "--enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland" arguments. The first solution worked for me sometimes while the second just didn't work at all.

Well, during my testing, I have a third solution that worked (at least for me), which is using the LTS kernel and maybe also add the kernel parameters from the first solution for extra reassurance.

This probably won't work for everyone but I hope it was helpful. :3

QUESTION How do I get input overlay for OBS?

Hi everyone,

I use Gnome with X11. Yesterday I already tried getting input overlay with via AUR (obs-plugin-input-overlay) for OBS.

The overlay source loads and renders my presets perfectly in OBS, but it completely fails to register any mouse clicks or keyboard strokes. Nothing lights up when I press keys whether I play a game or not.

The assets/presets and the plugin itself are installed correctly, and OBS layers hierarchy is fine.

I thought the problem could be the Linux itself with not detecting the input, so that's why I'm here and not in obs subreddit.

QUESTION What are some other web browsers that work well on (Arch) Linux?

Been using Firefox for over a decade so far, but some recent changes to their design and their seeming disinterest in allowing their users to remain on the previous design that people have already gotten used to is making me want to move elsewhere.

What are some other browsers that people have been using that are well supported within Arch Linux? I've heard about Brave and Waterfox, but I'm down to try out any browser that is both fast and secure.

EDIT:

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm not the biggest fan of vertical tabs, at least for now, maybe they'll grow on me later. For now, I've switched over to Helium browser, and it's exactly the kind of minimal and fast browser I was looking for!

SUPPORT | SOLVED Is there a reason why ROCm is stuck at version 7.2.4 in the Arch repos, even though the latest stable release is 7.14.1?

Hello, I was recently trying to troubleshoot some issues I have with PyTorch (basically one thread spins at 100% all the time even if PyTorch is idle), and I've read some suggestions to update ROCm/HSA to the latest version, 7.14.1, released on September 2nd. However, Arch seems to be stuck at a really old version. I was wondering if there's a reason for this? GPU compatibility? Not enough testing? Can we expect an update anytime soon? Just to understand if it's worth trying to install it through other means

Update: I installed rocm-bin (10.1.0) from the AUR and the issue is fixed, thanks everyone!

SHARE DotDoctor - A Maintenance CLI for Arch Linux

Im a software engineering student, and I recently installed Arch Linux on my ThinkPad as my first Linux system.

Ive been enjoying it, but I found myself looking up different commands to check updates, clean package caches, and handle other maintenance tasks. I built DotDoctor to bring those checks into one place.

Its still an early project, and Im learning as I build it. Id appreciate feedback from experienced Arch users, especially on the update workflow and anything Ive overlooked.

SUPPORT Audio players pause when starting

Anybody else been getting this? A couple ms after starting an audio file, player will just pause for a bit then resume. It's annoying on apps like feishin, where the music fades when paused so it's like the full first second of a song is just really quiet. Doesn't happen on firefox, only started happening for me around a month ago.

DISCUSSION I was bored so I threw together a simple GUI installer for tar files, I call it Tartersauce!

Basically I threw this together in one afternoon with some help from Google AI Mode (not vibe coded, the only thing it did was verify that I hadn't made any critical mistakes). It is an attempt to replicate how exe files are installed on windows but for linux apps on arch. Currently can only install apps, although I will be making either an update or companion app in the future to manage and uninstall packages via GUI. Utilizes Zenity, bash, and tar. Bug reports and feedback are much appreciated!

https://github.com/ThatOneAmericanSpy/Tartersauce

Notice on AI usage:
I did use AI (Google's AI Mode) Purely for Assistance. I did not use it to write the program for me, just to offer suggestions on what could be improved and what would cause errors. I typed everything out myself, and the end product was of my design.

QUESTION I spent ~50 hours trying to understand audio routing on my laptop

I spent days trying to get my laptop's audio working the way I want on Arch, and honestly, I didn't expect something as simple as audio routing to be this complicated.

My laptop has speakers, a headphone jack and an internal microphone. I wanted to be able to choose Speakers or Headphones in an application like discord or firefox and have the audio actually come out of the device I selected, same thing for the microphones, I thought this would be a normal PipeWire/WirePlumber configuration problem.

I read the Arch Wiki. I learned about PipeWire and WirePlumber. I tried wpctl, pactl, GUI tools, TUI tools, scripts, virtual sinks, filters, different profiles and different configurations.

I also asked AI about it more times than I want to admit. I spent tens of hours trying different things.

After hours of doing this, I started looking at what the hardware is actually exposing.

My laptop has one sound card and, as far as I understand it, one analog output. The internal speakers and the headphone jack aren't two independent audio devices. They're connected to the same hardware output, and the codec switches between them as ports.

I tried to make two sinks and select them as default devices. I tried scripts to switch the audio between them, and I tried switching the port based on the name.

Is there anyone who experienced the same problem and managed to fix it?

is there a better audio server that can manage this?

I'm actually fed up and just want to move on. I spent days of my life trying to fix this small problem.Maybe I'm missing something because this is my first time configuring a Linux system. I learned a lot, but I really want a solution 😭

QUESTION Photocraft had love with my terminal 3 times

I know the title is a little bit awkward but it's true. I am usually pretty against fully vibe coded stuff but when I saw the photocraft the hype was so real I thought maybe I should give it a try. Found it on the aur and tried installing it but it always crashes my terminal while compiling its own "engine". Happened 3 times since yesterday. Wonder if anyone had the same issue or something. If there are any solutions I can try downloading it 2 more times and roll my the-times-i-have-tried to 5.
