Open Discussion Monthly /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

Welcome to the monthly open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion
  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated
  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)
  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.
  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.
  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

    • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.
  • Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial

    • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.
  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

    • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

MOD POST AskLA rules update: Temporary moratorium for political questions

AskLA is meant to be a place to ask and answer questions about the Los Angeles area. Due to the upcoming primary and general elections, this subreddit has been a frequent place to ask questions of a political nature and while these are legitimate questions about the area, the intention of the posters making these questions have been either to astroturf particular candidates or to sway opinions this close to the poll dates.

As a result, I'd like to discourage standalone threads that are political in nature and would welcome these discussions to be initiated in the monthly pinned "Open Discussion" thread.

This community also relies on user reports so you can report political posts under rule #2, "Posts must be questions about Los Angeles.

Thank you for being a community that moderates itself with the lightest touch.

People Anyone get married recently and decide it was a good idea to release a pair of doves?

If so, fuck you. We now have two doves living in a rooftop “viewing room” in DTLA because they don’t know how to live in the middle of a city. They are eating the scraps that fall to the floor from the parakeet cages. I’ve called wildlife rescue to no avail.

Fuck you selfish people all day, everyday.

Decent people, any suggestions?

Health Has finding a regular doctor in LA quietly become impossible, and have we all just accepted it?

This isn't a complaint, just an observation. Doctors accepting new patients are scheduling appointments a month or more out, so everyone I know has simply stopped going to the doctor. The system here has reached a point where there are urgent care centers on every corner charging arbitrary fees you only find out about later or, if things get really bad, you have to go to the ER. This city of 10 million people is just barely scraping by.

So, I want to know: what system is everyone using these days? Go to urgent care and foot the bill? Kaiser and the long wait? Those online doctor apps? Or just ignoring issues until it becomes an emergency? I genuinely want to know if anyone under 40 in this city actually has a primary care doctor they can see within a week.

Living What can I do about a barking dog at my apartment complex? Van Nuys, CA

That’s the gist of it. I have a neighbor with a small dog that barks relentlessly. Most days I leave early for work around 5am so I’m gone until about 4pm but days like today when i have a day off and need to sleep, the dog wakes me up at 7:30am. There’s also nights when the dog has woken me up at 10:30pm when i have alarms set for 4:20am and 4:30am for work. Even the days when i come straight home instead of exercising the dog is barking on and off frequently for all hours from about 3pm thru the remainder of the day.

I am not a passive person, I will approach people face to face if i have an issue stranger or not. This morning the dog woke me up and I heard a dog rustling around outside in the courtyard. I stood outside on the rail and watched the dog until it went back to its door. I proceeded to knock on that door and ask if that’s their dog barking. We had a conversation and they told me who it actually was. I trust this guy bc he lives and works on the property, he’s the maintenance guy. He’s here all day everyday so I’m assuming he knows. He also appeared visibly annoyed by it.

Things I have tried: messaging and emailing the on-site property manager on numerous occasions. She literally has been ignoring me, it’s incredibly disrespectful. Knocking on neighbors doors trying to figure out who it is. That’s it.

Things I’m going to do: go above their head and talk directly with corporate entities for the property.

I don’t really know what my rights are as a tenant regarding noise that impacts my mental health, my workflow (money), my ability to relax/unwind and just generally feeling comfortable in my own space.

If you or someone you know has been through something similar, I’d like to know what steps you took, any outcomes, fallouts, solutions, housing right department contacts (emails, phone numbers, etc.) anything that could help me reach a conclusion here. It goes without being said that this must be specific to our rights as tenants being citizens in Los Angeles. What can I do here?

I live in Van Nuys, CA

Working How does 25% of America make more than $100K?

https://data.census.gov/table/ACSST1Y2024.S2001

Data shows over 30 million Americans out of 120 million Americans, make $100K+ a year.

This means excluding part time workers, 25% of America makes $100K+ a year.

This includes stuff from the Midwest, middle of nowhere where, and places like LA where everything is 10X more expensive.

Once we factor in cost of living in Los Angeles, employers are likely to pay $100K+. If not, you are likely underpaid as a FULL time worker. Is this not a shocking statistic?

Recommendations Any Korean Day Spa for Plus Size Women?

Hi, please be nice. So I’m new to Jjimjilbangs and really want to make sure I’m being respectful and courteous of cultural practices. I’m asking for recommendations for myself and my sister. However, I know we have to be fully nude in wet spa areas and need some advice.

Transparently, I’m a size 10 and my sister is a size 16. I’ll be blunt. Would we be judged by the workers or patrons for being tan, fat, and heavily tattooed? I want to emphasize I’m not trying to be culturally biased or racist, I just know as a Southeast Asian how the women treat us in our country for being chubby and tattooed. If I am being offensive by asking, I am truly sorry. I want to take my sister to a day spa for her birthday, but she has been struggling lately with her weight gain while I’ve recently lost weight, plus she had a baby and just wishes her body will go back to how it was. I took her to a Head Spa last year but obviously that’s very different. I’m trying to encourage her to come out of her shell because she’s beautiful no matter what size, but I know her and I know she might feel anxious.

Regardless of your body type, if you’ve visited any KSpa in LA, do you think there any Korean Day Spas where we can fully be comfortable and not judged? Maybe I’m overthinking this and no one will care or no one will stare. But also would they even have XL or XXL sizes for the dry area clothing they give us? What if they don’t have her size pants?! I don’t know. Thanks for helping if you have any reccs :(

Edit: Thank you all SO much for the ample responses and encouragement. I got a lot of replies so just want to know I’m reading all the reccs and it’s safe to say I’ll be booking for us to visit for her birthday to one of these locations 🎉 🥰

Transportation Why are so many people angry about the new Burbank Airport terminal? The old one was awful

It had terrible food amenities, looked painfully outdated, and was simply ugly. I don't get why people aren't elated to have a nicer, cleaner, and more modern airport?

Events Dark Wedding at Clifton’s?

Hey, Clifton’s is doing a Halloween event called the Dark Wedding. It’s an immersive experience. It sounds super cool! They did something similar last year. I guess last year was the first time, so this year should be even better. A friend went last year, and said it was awesome, so we got VIP tix to go this year! Is anyone else going? Did you try it last year? I feel like not a lot of people have heard about it. Here’s a post with some info:

About LA Divorce lawyer recommendations for an immigrant?

I recently found out that my husband has been cheating on me for years. We were childhood sweethearts, so I’m still trying to process everything while figuring out what I need to do next. Looking for a divorce lawyer? I live closer to Pasadena and San Gabriel, so someone around that side of LA would be more convenient, but open to traveling for the right attorney.

I’m an immigrant, and I think I would feel more comfortable speaking with someone who has experience working with immigrants or Asian families and understands the cultural background. I’m also worried that my husband may already be making moves behind the scenes, so I’d like to speak with someone soon. If you’ve personally worked with a divorce attorney you trusted, I would appreciate a recommendation.

Recommendations Non chain hotels not too far from the Kia Forum for an overnight stay?

I was a road warrior for 3 years and I've had my lifetime fill of chain hotels. I know this eliminates all places really close. Culver City is too expensive. What about Venice Beach? They have a couple boutique hotels in the $300 range. Is Hollywood too far?

Things to do Family Holiday from Vegas to LA recommendations?

• Upvotes

We are flying from Australia to Vegas late Feb 2027 with 3 kids 8, 11 and 12. I actually won the flights and accom in a competition! We have 5 nights in Vegas and then 8 nights after that to explore and then fly out of LAX. My husband and I have both been to Vegas and California before, including many of the national parks. Being that it's not long out of winter, i'm wondering what kind of things we should do after Vegas? Just drive straight to LA? Is it a good time of year to do anything in particular?

Also, what would be a good part of LA to base ourselves in? I would like to see Warner Bros studios and Griffith Park. We'll stay in Anaheim for Disney. I was also thinking of driving to San Diego Zoo for a day, do we drive back that night or stay the night at San Diego?

Any advice for the region would be great, thanks!

Health Psychologist who offers sliding scale?

I'm looking for a therapist, am looking for sort of a needle in a haystack. Wondering if anyone has leads?

I'm self pay, and budget can only do under $100 right now (hoping that changes soon!)

Would like a woman, ideally 40s or above

Licensed Psychologist

Familiar with OCD, CPTSD, and ideally knowledgable with mindfulness and somatic approaches as well.

A lot of the resources such as Open Path, Better Help, etc. don't work for me due to the nature of some of my conditions (I need a seasoned psychologist, not someone in training or a social worker). I've reached out to several people via Psychology Today but am still coming up short, is this an impossible ask?

Recommendations I’m looking for an e-bike battery rebuilder in LA. Is there a shop in LA?

I’m looking to have the battery pack of a Copenhagen wheel rebuilt. It takes the Samsung 18650 form factor and I’m hoping to upgrade to the 3500mAh capacity. There are approximately 24 batteries which will need to be spot-welded together.

Is there any shop in LA which does this? I live by USC but will travel to get this done.

Any other question! Inglewood hit-and-run on 10/9 at 11:12 PM — can anyone help identify this car?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone might recognize this vehicle or have information that could help me identify the driver who hit me and fled.

On October 9 at approximately 11:12 PM, I was involved in a hit-and-run on W Manchester Blvd, just before the left turn onto Briarwood Dr in Inglewood, CA.

I was driving home from The Neighbourhood concert at the Kia Forum when this happened. I’m mentioning that in case anyone else was leaving the concert around that time and remembers seeing this car or the collision.

I have dashcam footage of the collision, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get a readable license plate. I have already submitted the footage and pictures of the vehicle to the police, but I’m reaching out here in the hope that someone might recognize the car or have information that could help.

The car appears to be an older, white, full-size, boxy four-door sedan. Based on its shape, my two guesses are a Lincoln Town Car or a Mercury Grand Marquis, but I’m not certain of the make or model. Photo of car and video here: https://imgur.com/a/XFcPlek

Identifying details:
• A black pinstripe running along the side of the car between the tires.
• Significant front-end/hood damage from the collision. Please look at the attached picture to see how severe the damage appears.
• The car may have black paint transfer from hitting my vehicle so hard.

Does anyone recognize this car, know of other models that look similar, or remember seeing a light-colored sedan with significant front-end damage around Inglewood that night?

If you were leaving the Kia Forum after The Neighbourhood concert, driving along Manchester Blvd, or live or work nearby, you may have seen something that could help. Dashcam or security-camera footage from the area around that time would also be greatly appreciated.

Any information or help identifying the vehicle would mean a lot. Please feel free to DM me. Thank you!

Food/Drink Best vegan spots near the airport, Santa Monica/nearby beaches, and/or NoHo/Burbank/nearby towns in the valley?

My vegan foodie brother is coming to town next Monday for about 2 weeks. He has a short list of vegan places to try already, but I know there are tons of options out there. Specifically, any recs for the following?

-Vegan deli or deli with vegan chicken salad
-Vegan spots near the airport and/or a nearby beach/boardwalk to go to after he lands at 10:30am Monday
-Vegan spots in the valley, specifically near Burbank/NoHo/Taluca Lake/Studio City or nearby towns (I live in NoHo where he will be staying)

Below are places he has on his list already. If any of these are must haves or overrated, I’ll gladly take that feedback, too!

-Shojin
-PLANTA Marina Del Ray
-Magpies Softserve
-Doomie’s Home Cookin’
-Mr. Charlie’s TMS
-Gracias Madre
-Donut Friend
-Pura Vita
-Veggietize Me
-Crossroads Kitchen
-Samata Vegan Thai House
-El Cocinero

He is also going on a couple 2-3 day excursions while here to camp/hike in Joshua Tree and the Sequoia National Forest (he knows how far away they are from LA but is more interested in national parks than touristy things in the city). So if there are any vegan must visit places on the way to either location, I’ll gladly take those recs too to pass along to him.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations Where to take teenagers in LA?

Hello everyone! My child’s 17th birthday is coming up and one of the options I want to give her is a day out in L.A. with her sister. They are both really into Korean pop culture so I wanted to ask for suggestions on where to take them. I’ve been thinking about karaoke, maybe like a Korean makeover (if that’s a thing?), and some good Korean food that isn’t kbbq, as she doesn’t like having to cook it yourself. Any suggestions (especially those different from what I’m thinking) would be really welcome and appreciated! 😊

Food/Drink Is the Smokehouse worth visiting?

We enjoy classic / old Hollywood Los Angeles when we visit - typically several times a year from SF. Last time, we went to Musso & Frank and had a ball. This time we're considering either going back to M&F - or trying The Smokehouse in Burbank. The Smokehouse has a much lower Yelp review. Curious to hear other thoughts?

It's OK if the food is so-so, we live in SF and can get amazing food any night of the week. We're looking for more classic Hollywood vibes.

Moving Should I take 10k buyout in Mid City?

I've lived in the same rent controlled apartment for 2.5 years. Didn't give a number but offered a settlement of relocation fees + 2 months rent in exchange for withdrawing housing complaint.

I currently pay about $1,600 for my studio. New owner renovated a few units & originally marketed for $2995, but then turned into rentals for $444/night. What do you think - is it worth it to move? Is that a reasonable amount?

EDIT*** The issues I brought to LAHD was regarding short term rentals in RSO building, no construction permits, and harassment (trying to force tenants out)
